Picked up an iPhone 3GS during the week and have just read that a jailbreak for the phone is now out (it is called purplera1n)

I am totally foreign to the whole 'jailbreak' concept and am wondering are there any dangers in doing this?

I have an iPhone 3G and have jailbroken the 2.2 and the new 3.0 software with no hiccups whatsoever. If anything goes wrong in the installation you can always restore the original software through iTunes. I'm not going to take complete responsibility for anything going wrong but with my experiences just jailbreaking is very safe. Unlocking is another story and with a 3.1 software release around the corner I would not take the Jailbreak any further.

Download the purplerain software and from what I have heard it is very simple:thumbsu:

3.1 already?

any rumors as to what it includes? or just bug fixes?

* Video editing on iPhone 3GS wont overwrite the clip over the original when you are editing a clip.
* iPhone will now vibrate whenever you switch to the mode where you can move and arrange icons on the iPhone home screen.
* "Fraud Protection" toggle has been added to settings under Safari.
* iPhone boot time is now faster.
* Voice Control over Bluetooth.
* New APIs to enable third party apps to access videos and edit them.

Mainly small tweaks and updates but potential to cause havok for those who unlock their iPhone with 3.0 and accidentally update when it becomes live.

NOTE* Does not affect Jailbreaking, updating software will only revert back to the original and re-jailbreaking will be required. You won't harm your phone.

Thanks for the infor LB :thumbsu:

So do you think i should jailbreak the 3.0 software now or wait for the 3.1 update to come out and then jailbreak that version??

I wish Apple would just follow in the footsteps of all the other phone makers and just allow us to put whatever we want on the iPhone. I think it is ridiculous that they place so many restrictions on what you can and can't do with it

Yeah it's quite annoying that they force you to fiddle with sensitive stuff just to have YOUR phone how YOU like it. However they have a phone which is so fantastic and demanded that they can do whatever they like. If they made it so you could have your songs as ringtones and gave the user control of the themes and colours then most people wouldn't bother with Jailbreaking.

I jailbroke the 3.0 software as soon as redsn0w became avaliable but have since reverted back because I had no real reason to have it that way. Getting a little bored with the standard look agian now though so think I will jailbreak again tonight.

If you want to just jailbreak the device go right ahead. When the new software becomes live the only thing you will have to worry about is re-jailbreaking after you have updated. If you needed to unlock then I would probably wait. Sounds like you just want to have control of your phone through JBing so do it now buddy:thumbsu:

I still really struggle with what you guys are making look like a very simple concept. With my 3GS, which one am I after, what are the advantages of this and how do i do it?

Sorry about all of the questions, but i'm new to this process. If I JB the phone, will all of the free apps be available to me or do I need to do anything further?

Also, if the phone is JB'en, will it still be able to function once the 3.1 update becomes available? I really want control over personalising my phone, but do not want to risk stuffing it up in the process.

There are plenty of Jailbreaking walkthrough avaliable but here is a quick run through.

Advantages: You are able to play with all the aspects of the phone including themes, colours, fonts, ringtones and message tones. You can download and install any apps for free from numerous sites across the net. Jailbreaking allows you to have many JB only applications inlcuding iBlacklist which is very popular. Summing everything up you can run your phone how you like it and not just how Apple want you to have it.

What you need: purplera1n which is HERE

Download the software. Run the software.

It brings up an app called Freeze. Run this app and this will install Cydia which is the Jailbroken iPhones "app store" this is where you download programs like 'winterboard' that allow you to change themes.

I have a 3G so I haven't used this particular software but it sounds as easy if not easier than the one I have used many times. Good luck.

Yeah don't worry about the 3.1 update if your only JAILBREAKING the 3GS. If and when it comes it will only wipe your jailbreak and will not load any of your unpaid for apps. You won't have any issues other than that. It is just a very simple situation of waiting for the Jailbreak to appear for the 3.1 software and then re-doing the process. Apparently the new software could be up to 5 months away. You will not ruin your phone with a jailbreak. The restore option is always avaliable to return the un-jailbroken state.

Thanks for your help. One last (no doubt stupid) question: do I click that link through my iPhone or through a laptop/desktop?

You computer. Download that file to your computer and then just follow the directions. The program should tell you exactly what state your phone needs to be in to continue the process. Not certain for your case but more than likely it needs to be off but plugged in.

I don't mind answering questions so don't be afraid to ask :thumbsu:

OK, I've got Cydia on my phone now. What apps/sources should I get?

I just tried to JB my iphone and now it appears as though my SIM is locked and the jailbreak was unsuccessful. Surely this is not meant to happen...

Have you tried again?

If it doesn't work again, go into itunes and do a restore. Should return your phone to factory settings.

Its doing some weird things. I have Freeze and Cydia installed but the Sim is still locked. Will the restore repair this problem?

It has now entered into safe mode.

I attempted to restore from backup but this appears to have failed. I think i will try to fully restore now.

I will post my results once completed.

I got the JB to work, but it seems as though most of the cydia apps do not work on the 3.0 firmware. For example, Winterboard is the app for modifying the display of the iPhone and that just sends my phone into safe mode until i uninstall it.

I have tried to restore the phone totally, but it is not responding and will not get out of recovery mode. Called Apple and they couldn't assist saying it was something to do with a proxy server.

So here i am with an iPhone that doesn't work and no way of formatting the device.

If i knew i was going to have to go through this much shit to get a simple message tone on the phone i would have seriously waited for the Nokia N97 :mad::mad:

How do you get games for free that apple would charge you for? I downloaded Cydia and Freeze and all that...

you're jailbreaking for message tones? lol great reason

I was just making a point. Clearly that was not the main reason, but it is just so frustrating that they place so many restrictions on a phone that is meant to be yours....

After 2.5 hours on the phone to Apple, i got no assistance apart from them informing me that i need to take it to an Apple store.

Infuriated as i was, i formatted my computer and installed everything again and it has now restored to factory settings. What a waste of a day :(

If I knew it was going to mean this much trouble for you I wouldn't have advised you to go ahead. Everything I had read and experienced was positive so thought everything would be fine. My advice if you are having big problems is too just leave your phone un jailbroken and keep an eye on this blog.

These are the guys you can trust with all this stuff but from what I have read they had no part in the purplera1n thing.

Hope your phone is OK:thumbsu:

Hmmm i am watching this thread very closely as my Nokia N95 8gig contract ends in 1 month with Optus and i have a very keen eye on the IPhone 3gS but this will be my first Iphone (as i have an Ipod) and i am debating which way to go with regards to this phone and the new N97.

Decisions Decisions

I have had Nokias for the last 10 years and NEVER had 1 break down after Upgrading to the newest top of the line model every 1-2 years.

So dont know if i should go the Iphone or stick with the Nokia!!! Jailbreak of the new Iphone and reliability will have a BIG say. ;)

Not your fault LB! I did a lot of reading before hand and knew if anything went wrong that restoring the phone would get it back to original settings. Only thing is, i wasn't expecting that process to be as difficult as it was.

I think the purplera1n jailbreak for the new firmware has its flaws (i.e winterboard does not work with 3.0) so i might be better waiting for the Dev Teams jailbreak.

All in all i had a big learning day with my iPhone yesterday and am just glad i finally got it running again.
