Who couldn't care less if they were run over by a truck today?:(

Who lives in the past and doesn't see anything good in todays society?

Music down the pooper, sport becoming a big business, over population.

Feck, not much to be happy about today.

Not ****ing much at all.

Being a drummer(drummers are now extinct)Richmond supporter doesn't fecking help.

Who gets really down that you don't care?

Anti depressants do feck all.

All they do is help you write yourself off.

Tried alot and none of them work.

Look after yourself, mate, and sorry for your trouble.

My tips - 80% cocoa dark chocolate, and force yourself to take lots of exercise, even when you don't feel like it.

The world is just the same when you are depressed as when you are happy. You are just seeing it differently at the moment. You can overcome the voice that says everything is sh1t.

I saw a counsellor through a church project. She didn't force her religion down my throat and helped me a see my problems from a different angle.

I took myself off anti-depressants. I think they are a con too, but some say they work, each to their own.

Good luck.

Agree with those points from bresker.

I found that increased socialisation and exercise really helped. Planning my days so I didn't have much free time to ponder about the past.

I also took myself off the meds, they were good at first. But after a while I just found they did nothing. I found myself alot more happier and energetic without them.

Best of luck Smashha

I understand what you're going through because I've been battling it for five years or so, but you shouldn't give the impression that antidepressants don't work. They may not work for you, but that's just unfortunate. They're great for me.

One thing I wish could have been forced upon me in my worst days: sleep proper hours.

Thanks friends.

I get bad side effects with all the stuff I've been on.

I'm on these things that taste like orange lollies now.

Still feel s**t though.

My doctor recvkons it's more of a self esteem thing.

I did lousy at school so couldn't afford the brains to get a real job and have a nice car etc.etc.

My drums were my way out but now they're getting replaced by machines, that part of me has died too.

Sick of playing for bands where the guitarist comes in and tells you what beat to play after making one up on his computer.

Soul is being sucked out of the music.

Just feel like I'm at a dead end and the world aint getting better.

Life is a lottery.

You either get born with brains and get all the spoils in life or the other way and you are the ridicule of people and struggle all the time.

Doesn't seem fair IMO.

hey.
have u tried seeing a counsellor or someone who can feel comfortable with, to give you some skills to work with?

also a thing called brain wave therapy really does work. Changes the t waves I think it is, and I have seen remarkable changes in people who have undertaken it.

meds can help, but getting the right one can take time. have u tried fluvox?

good luck. you are not alone.

Anti despressants turn you into a zombie, they are just a masking agent.

It's hard trying to get on with your life each day but you do it. Try thinking about family & friends who will be devasted if you end your life, they will be left feeling guilty that they didn't pick up on your depression & help you.

Last thing I want to do, is leave my family & friends with that guilt, as hard as it is to keep going sometimes.

I know that this is going to sound incredibly harsh, completely unhelpful and worthy of derision, and as someone who has never suffered any type of depression/mental illness feel free to disregard my opinion, but here goes...

They seem like pretty stupid reasons to be depressed mate. If you don't like the guitarist in your band, do something and make your own. Find some new people to connect with. You are saying that the world isn't getting any better, while you're sitting at home whinging about it as if it is a forgone conclusion. How is anything going to change with that attitude?

Life is only what you make of it; if you are expecting someone or something to change things for you, it's not going to happen. Are you a Jordan McMahon or a Jack Dyer? Time to take the game by the scruff of the neck mate.

If the drugs aren't helping, give them up. If booze is an issue, cut down. Find people in your life who will support you and give you strength; they are probably already there, but they might not realise that you need their help.

Good luck.

First of all; I'm no scientist or the like, but I've got some advice none-the-less.

If you don't play sport; get involved. Go join a footy club or soccer club and just enjoy every moment (eg. kicking a goal from 45m, etc). Then once you start to really enjoy it, you'll work yourself harder to get better and better and then goals will start entering your mind (eg. I want to run 3k under 5mins next month :D, etc). Push yourself to get to training, socials and trivia nights and you'll start to realise how rewarding & enjoyable life can be. Healthy body = Healthy mind in my books.

You don't understand anything about depression obviously.

I think that's a major problem amongst people who have never suffered it (like me). I can never understand why people can just be sad, and perhaps neither can they. A friend of mine who suffered depression told me that he found himself getting really down about really trivial s**t, and then felt stupid for feeling like that (which obviously made it worse).

Exacrly & the person I quoted said to play sport to avoid depression, strange that a lot of top athletes suffer from it & some have ended their lives.

I don't think he suggested that he take up a sport at the highest level, just to start an activity that can be rewarding both personally and inter-personally.

Club-based amateur sport could be perfect in this regard. Exercise is a proven strategy in helping depression, while the team atmosphere and goal-setting that comes from sport could help his self-esteem.

Anti despressants turn you into a zombie, they are just a masking agent.

This is pretty bad from someone who said elsewhere in the thread "you don't understand anything about depression obviously." Come on, you can't make such blanket statements.

Antidepressants may not be necessary or sufficient but they help many people. Without turning into zombies. There are many different classes of them and plenty won't 'turn you into a zombie', whatever that means. Certainly I never felt like one, but for once was just able to feel calm and rational. The change in my outlook was incredible - I could tell the week they kicked in. Things just felt...normal.

As for being a masking agent, no. If depression is a chemical imbalance then sometimes the only way that can be treated is with another chemical to restore it. Perfectly happy (otherwise), active, healthy people can get depression. Nobody should make any statement that antidepressants can or cannot definitively cure anything, or for that matter that therapy/exercise/socialising/etc etc alone or in conjunction with any other, can definitively cure it.

Couldn't have replied to that statement much better than that. :thumbsu:

Have you ever suffered from depression?

Do you have any idea how incredibly difficult it can be just to go outside, or talk to people, let alone join a sports team?

It could be a nice idea in theory, to help a depressed person on the road to recovery, but it misses many things.

Have you ever suffered from depression?

Short answer; no. But coming off a long run or being involved in a tennis match for me, helps me avoid stress and helps me see the positive side of things in a more simpler fashion. Everyone is different though; I understand that.

Yep, and I understand that. Just my general thoughts were posted originally. Was almost trying to tell him what works for me when I feel a little down at times.

No one is saying it's the be-all and end-all, but it could definitely help. As you said, it's a 'road' to recovery. One activity can't change everything.

Do you have some suggestions as to what smasha can do to help his situation?

You don't understand anything about depression obviously.

Yet you wrote what you did about antidepressants in such a conclusive manner?!

Come on mantis.

Antidepressants may not be for everyone, but you have to weigh the benefits and risks on a case by case basis.

======================

As for the OP, have you been in been in touch with any counsellors?

These two sites really can be very helpful:

http://www.beyondblue.org.au/index.aspx?
http://www.lifeline.org.au/

Lifeline provides a 24 hour counselling service, and the number can be found on the site. If ever you're feeling like you need someone to listen to you, or voice any frustrations that you have, or just need to talk to someone, they are there for you.

Also, if you haven't already, it's a good idea to be open about your concerns regarding antidepressants and side effects (or any other issue on your mind) with your doctor, pharmacist or other health professionals associated with your care.

Really? I read your post & you told people that if they took up sport they wouldn't suffer depression.

I never said they wouldn't at all suffer from depression just from playing & being involved in sport; but just an extra something that could help him get back to where he wants to be.

Really? I read your post & you told people that if they took up sport they wouldn't suffer depression.

You can't be that stupid. Surely.

Where does it say that? It merely points out that sport can be beneficial for mind and body. Do you disagree?

Yes, but your avoidance of stress or seeing things positively is on a far, far, far different level of things to someone who has depression.

Exercise releases endorphins which are good for both your body and mind in the short and long term, undoubtedly, but it isn't going to work magic on someone with depression as simply as that.

No one is saying it's the be-all and end-all, but it could definitely help. As you said, it's a 'road' to recovery. One activity can't change everything.

Do you have some suggestions as to what smasha can do to help his situation?

It could help, but it's probably going to be in conjunction with a lot of other things. And it's just not as simple as going out and doing it, for reasons I mentioned. At any rate it's not your suggestion to go play sport that offends me as much as this quote, "they seem like pretty stupid reasons to be depressed mate."

I could/do have many suggestions for smasha. For personal reasons today I do not have the energy to sit here and discuss them in any depth. Maybe later in the week.

No I don't, but you people are missing out that when someone is suffering depression, that playing sport isn't going to be an automatic fix.
