Here I have been worried about Butcher not making it to Port.

This is the first time I have seriously heard the proposition that Port might not take him if given the chance?

The 197cm tall, noted for his contested marking, agility and pace for his size, has been linked recently to Port Adelaide, who have two early selections - picks eight and nine.

Even if he isn't nabbed by the Power, he is unlikely to get past Essendon (No.10), Melbourne (No.11) or Carlton (No.12).

Surely there is no chance that a guy touted as a number one pick earlier in the year could end up going 12?

James Sellar ring a bell?

That's the point. Sellar or Gibbs were touted as the logical #1 & #2 picks at the start of 2006, both from the same club & high school. Gibbs had a ripper year, Sellar stagnated.

I would say has gone backwards. Being used as a back up ruckman to Ivan Maric of all things. Cant be a good sign when your meant to be a tall forward.

In 2006 he stagnated compared to his 2005. 2007 and 2008 you could say he'd gone backwards.

Sellar rucked this year because Moran got injured, Griffin was perpetually under an injury/form cloud and Tippett had become too important to the forward line. Otherwise he wouldn't have played many games at all. He's been rucking in the SANFL, but there are major doubts as to whether he will able to carve a career in this position beyond a bit of pinch-hitting. Personally I have doubts altogether with Tippett, McKernan, Davis, Young and to a lesser extent Walker and Otten filling the KPP roles he'd be eyeing off. But he definitely improved his intensity and work-rate in 09, which is a promising start and a genuine improvement at least.

Different kettle of fish.

Sellar was a dominant underage ruckman who was undersized in the role at the top level (196cms - his leap and athleticism cancelled out by the circle), hence the longstanding attempt by the Crows to convert him into a key forward with sub-par results.

He was a quintessential tweener.

When combined with his horrid eligibility year where he was ill and never really got going - missing the U18 championships to boot - he was a guaranteed slider.

Similar to the overhyped tweenage of Brett Chalmers, he now looks to be caught in the jack of all trades/master of none utility loop while he looks to settle and forge a career.

Butcher - while suffering a similarly hexed eligibility year beginning with surgery last offseason which has harmed his rating - is still an exciting prospect given his size and potential to play in his natural position at the highest level (197cms).

There would be no way that he would get past Melbourne pick 11.

I think the only chance he would make it to us though is if Port do decide to go for a midfielder and then the home grown Panos, but it looks unlikely.

Not sure how there can be "no doubt about it" when 7 clubs get to pick before it becomes Port's choice.

6 clubs actually, Melbourne has picks 1 & 2

Sellar did play int he Under 18s.

I have strong doubts whether we will pick Butcher with 8/9. Whilst he would be a lip-smacking proposition to pick up, I still dont know if we will pick him if hes available.

Weve traded in Jay Schulz and added Daniel Stewart to the senior list as key forwards and have added Daniel Bass to the rookie list as a ruck/maybe forward. Add that to Tredrea (for one more year) Salter, Motlop and Westhoff x 2 and I have the feeling the club might think it has its key forward spots looked after, despite the fact that Butcher is potentially significantly better than all of them.

Ill probably be in tears if we overlook him, but its most definitely not a foregone conclusion that we'll pick him if hes available at 8/9.

No offence because i know Melbourne tall forwards are nothing special at all but the names ive highlighted are trash.

Tredrea is just about finished, Motlop can play tall and small and Salter shows promise but he hasnt got the upside of Butcher.

If i were Port i would take him, but then again im for Melbourne so i hope you dont

No shit sherlock, hence why I said 'Butcher is potentially significantly better than all of them'. You probably wouldnt even know who Daniel Stewart is either.

In any case, they are still forward options, and the club may well be happy with the KPF status quo.

Lol, I'd lay money on it.

Definately,

Stewart is set to be a champ, a heap of upside who could be used as either a Key Forward or even a Ruckman.

Regarding Butcher, if he gets to us I pray that we would take him. The Westhoff's really need to show more this year, and Schulz could really be anything.
