In what year does everyone think they will win their first flag? This is a serious question and i dont want posts like never or 2085 coz thats just silly. I personally think 2015.

Okay,2084 then ;)

quite a few years. once they stop recruiting the reject has beens from other clubs. they might start becoming a contender

How's Hayden Skipworth going at Essendon these days ?

They've recruited very well in the past few years, albiet without finding any quality KP replacements.

Their midfield will be top class though, and if Tarrant/Pavlich/McPharlin are still playing well in three years' time, I'd give 'em a chance.

I tend to agree, Freo are a slim chance in the next 5 years if everything goes right for them.

To win a flag you need to have as a minimum either elite key position players (say top 2 in the comp) and a good midfield (say top 6 in the comp) or an elite midfield and good key position players.

Freo's key position players are actually already very good bordering on elite - Tarrant, McPharlin, Pav and Sandilands is an excellent batch of KPP's. However their midfield is still very much developing and is probably in the worst couple in the AFL at the moment.

In terms of midfield development though I can see a lot of potential in Hill, Palmer, Suban etc to be amongst the best in the AFL once they have 50-100 games under their belt. The problem is by the time that happens the above mentioned KPP's will likely be well past their best and approaching retirement. From looking through their KPP youngsters there is not a lot appearing to come through and I suspect their very good/elite midfield will be wasted (probably a finals side without being a flag threat).

So for Freo to win a flag one of two things needs to happen:
- Their midfield needs to develop very quickly - Hill, Suban, Palmer, Morabito etc need to take the step from talented youngster to gun midfielder in the next two years; or
- Their KPP's need to be extremely durable and Pav, Sandi, Tarrant etc still need to be at their best in 4-5 years time.

If that doesn't happen, and unfortunately for Freo fans the odds are against it, then I suspect their next flag will be at least 10 years away - so put me down for 2025.

How can you say it's a serious question and then say 2015?

The Dockers are one of those clubs whose good players are mostly the older guys

Pav, sandilands, Tarrant, McPharlin,Des,Hasleby,Grover all will be over 30 in 3 years

The rest of their team are just average guys who wont be anything special and a few kids.

If they want a flag then they should keep maybe Pav (club legend) and sandilands and unload the rest.

But they will just hold onto all their older guys for too long and miss their chance again.

As the AFL will give GC and WS flags I'd expect freo will have to wait at least 10 years, but most likely a lot longer.

People forget Freo almost made the 2006 Grand Final, that was a massive year for the club.

Looking ahead, I find it difficult to see how the club I've supported since I was 9 can win a flag in the next few years at least.

The Essendon retirement village culture that has developed in the last few years grinds my gears. The fact that a couch who has failed epically for 3 seasons staight is still at the helm makes my heart weep.

I firmly believe Fremantle need a distinguished Western Australian coach, a Laidely or a McKenna would be fantastic.

I also worry that Freo will continue to be a schooling ground for talent that eventally winds up at other clubs (for little in return) and on the other spectrum a club that is a retirement village, welcoming players with -5 years left.

I also worry about the club (and many fans) continued embrace of mediocrity, a culture that has riddled the club for many years, but not so much these days, eg the old Sean McManus/Clive Waterhouse days. We must develop a winning culture, not a "there's always next season" mentality.

I also worry about our recruiting decisions, past and future. Taking nothing away from young gun Stephen Hill, passing on Daniel Rich (who is likely a Brownlow medal contender in the next few years) is just one of a well documented history in overall bad or not optimum recruiting decisions.

Overall the future looks bright with a number of young guns coming through, 2010 is a real water shed year for the club in terms of where we are at in our young development. We should be a finals contender by 2011 with a solid Premiership window open by 2013.

Win a Flag?
Not until they change their colours, mascot, lose the anchor and recieve a visit from Father Merrin. ;)

But seriously they have some great youngsters. Anything could happen and with a lot of luck they could snare one as early as 2012.
