Growing cricket big-bash crowds good for football

If people havent noticed, there have been some rather large crowds in the twenty20 Big Bash competition this year.

9 matches, 130,095 attendants @ 14,455/match

Some crowds were 28 k (NSW v Vic)
and 17k for about 4 others.

This is an increase on the average so far from 2008/09 of 10,391.

To put that in perspective:
2009/10 averages (finals NOT included)
AFL Football -> 36,212
Super 14 Rugby -> 20,200
NRL League -> 16,979
Big Bash Cricket -> 14,455 (ongoing)
A-League Soccer -> 9,505 (ongoing)

We all know that cricket and football use the same grounds. We should be able to use them to get even more support for upgraded grounds around Australia.
There is a new cricket domestic comp starting in two years possibly with teams in all the states plus two more.

Plenty of opportunities are arising:
  • A twenty20 cricket team in Western Sydney could perhaps team up with the new AFL team and provide dual memberships and marketing opportunities.
  • Improved training faciliites for many non-victorian teams.
  • Infrastructure in place for a Tasmanian AFL side (and possibly a NQ side)
  • New bargaining powers with governments for better transport to venues like Carrara.
  • Another tenant for Telstra Dome when AFL assumes ownership
  • More funds for stadium upgrades at Skilled Stadium, and perhaps more push for another AFL standard stadium in Melbourne.

Unless football in Tasmania plans to move South to Hobart forget it. Cricket in Tasmaina grows from it's base at Bellerive and the odd game in the North will be at the NTCA ground, not York Park.

How pointless comparing A-League crowds to domestic T20 - each Domestic T20 side plays 2-3 home matches max per year (unless they play finals). Every A-League side plays 13-14 home matches per season (not including finals). If the domestic T20 series was a 27 round competition like the A-League, I doubt it would be averaging more then 9k either.

Next thread please.

I went to the 2 Home games for tassie, which actually happened in three days and had great fun. Important word there is two. I hate people who use averages as an argument as if it means something on its own. On its own, it can tell you anything you want it to tell.

On to the topic, i have my doubts about this new franchise 20/20 Comp. I went to Bellerive cause i wanted to see the Tasmanian state side, and a good quality game of hit and giggle cricket. I dont really want to watch a another Tassie side, with maybe different squad, take on Geelong, with hacks from the bush league or other Tasmanian Tigers players side playing against Us. That, and how much 20/20 can Australia stand. Not a whole lot, not a whole season in any case. It will only be a month long comp at the most.

I cant see a this new 20/20 league being any real benefit to AFL.

-CAS is right about Tasmania too. And Football wont move away from York Park for a while. Government has put too much money into it. You cant really upgrade Bellerive either. I hope they never do. Its a great little cricket oval at the moment(bar the parking).

- John Dorian, there is a hot topic link above this forum that you can use, if you want to take pot shots about at another code.

With supporters like you, no wonder why Crystal Palace is languishing in the middle of the Championship.

Did I say I never liked soccer?
I was just suggesting a reason for the small crowds in the A-League.
Obviously 28 rounds is far too many.

Anyway on topic, I think the new T20 competition won't really provide benifits to AFL. Everything is already good and set to go for the competition so it will just kick off with what that is in provided now, and there should be no need for anything that would help the AFL.

Way to chuck some spin on the thread.

With the new domestic comp in a couple of years i assume that the amount of matches will increase dramatically.
Decent crowds will be seen as well. However we will have to wait and see if like soccer the novelty factor wears off.

Cricket may be advised to go the IPL route and have franchise teams rather state based squads.

They have already announced that they are planning to move to a franchise model, with one in each of the six state capitals and two more in locations TBD.

Geelong would be one of several obvious candidates.

i personally really like it...and im looking forward to the new comp a great deal

i think it should stick to the basics though... the less clubs the better. just take the 6 existing big bash clubs and run with that for the time being i reckon. i can see a natural cycle evolve of sheffield shield cricket being played during the week and 20/20 being played on the weekend.

the most important thing in the early stages it to get it on FTA TV

exactly, you are not going to see two sides from Tasmania all of a sudden and a whole bunch of bush cricketers. Instead of South Australia Redbacks v Victoria Bushrangers, whilst all sitting in awe at the Windies and Pakistani blow ins, it will be the Adelaide Angels v the Melbourne Metros with essentially the same squads as there is now + internationals. Geelong could get one but it would take an act of god (they would re-institute the ACT team before Geelong), the Gold Coast will and Sydney would have two probably but it won't change that much, bar they will no longer use State names. It's all about marketing, and the NSW Blues just don't cut it for example.

Hang on - how many home games do AFL sides play? A few more I'd warrant, funny - doesn't seem to hurt the crowds now does it?

would rather see the states stay the same and add a couple of NZ sides, dont think the domestic competition is strong enough to add extra aus sides

i think the crowds would drop off if the level of competition weakened

Cricket has always been Australia's true summer sport and I'm happy it's enjoyng a bit of a revival. Plus it's good to see some old fashioned state rivalry.

If any code is hurt by twenty-20's rise, it's the A-league. It had some clean air to work with without the distraction of AFL and NRL, but now there's another car on the track. (The NBL is a charred wreck embedded in a tyre barrier)

I've been to a few Big Bash games the last couple of years, including this year. I quite like it as a game to watch live. You get to see a whole match in about 3 hours. Nice to go after work - I try to knock off about half an hour early to get there, home before 9pm. I've been to a few 50 over games too, but if you can't organise a whole day off work you only get to watch the second innings.

I think there will be more teams but less Australian players anyway. They will try and compete with the IPL in the long run, you can see some kind of player draft, I won't say auction, for internationals. They will drag the likes of Warne and Flintoff out plus the lesser knowns like Pollard who is playing for SA at the mo'. The standard won't drop, it will be over run with T20 specialist from here and overseas, just like it has been this year with Bravo, Afridi, Gayle, the names will get bigger and in greater numbers.

....not forgetting the quality, or lack of it in teh A-League!

On topic, its fantastic that the Big Bash has gone so well. Test cricket is the Big Bore that no one turns up for.
