Alright im excited. Our depth is better than ever. the only reson we can't be premiers this year is our skill, sadly. Depth is the only thing that will hold us back this season i believe.
We have a very good starting 22, one that is easily good enough to take us into September. Our issue is that once we get 2-3 injuries we have big holes to fill.

Don't get my wrong i love our young guys like Ruffles, JVB, DeBoer etc etc but they aren't exactly super players at this point. Unproven for the most part to be fair and probably won't be proven for another 2 years.
I'm still convinced our road to the top 4 is probably 3-4 years away.

Depth? What depth? In terms of currently capable AFL players, our depth is severely lacking. Maybe in the future it will be OK, but not this season.

I must disagree, the depth is coming from the quality of players that have been recruited to our team. In terms of games played we have less experience than what we have had previously. In terms of quality , I think that the club is at its best point ever.

The calibre of players that are with us now are reflected in the strength of our Rookie listed players. Threads debating which player should be elevated is a wonderful position that we have never had before. Complaints about players that 'are' on the list appear to be reducing as we have cleared out those that cannot cut it at the highest level.

Can you imagine anyone presenting a strong argument today that Andrew Browne should get a game before DeBoer or Barlow? Gilmore is a better player than Pearce or that Josh head is a better option than Silvagni?

No team can afford to have their key players (Pav,Sandi,Taz) go down. The difference with Freo these days is that we know who is ready to step in and play to a good standard if one of those players was to unfortunately go down.

All 3 may be better by seasons end but all 3 have done jack all at this point to prove they provide any real depth or substance to our list. This is just a matter of fans getting excited about the potential rather then their current standing.

He doesn't have the the most textbook kicking style to thrive in the split second action environment of the AFL, but he's still a damn sight better than Gilmore bombing it as long and high as he possibly could every time he got the ball.

Fun fact.. Pearce is already only 3 goals behind Gilmore's career tally, so if nothing else at least his skills are more dangerous around goals. (And yes I know they play different roles. Just saying).

Barlow has proved a consistent and decorated player at VFL level, a far stronger comp than the WAFL. I would call that a break even with Browne.
The Pearce/Happy comparison has been covered. At least a break even comparison. Possibly a win to Clancy.
Silvagni has already owned Pavlich, something that Head could only dream about.

In saying that, I think Clinks may have been watching motivational documentaries when he posted this.

Wizard, be honest. Have Fremantle had a more disappointing player than Head in its history? (Interesting thought for a thread) The fact that the club Re Drafted him was an appaling decision. Silvagni has played well in the VFL on some excellent forwards as a KP backman. Fremantle have players on their list that have the same size as head but with Far greater skills. Would you prefer to keep Head and be without a KP backman if (God forbid) Taz of Elvis go down?

Barlow was a standout player in the VFL which George has sighted. Browne was injured for almost his history with the team and he played only 29 AFL and 64 WAFL games in seven seasons. The fact that he was virtually injured for 2 and a half years whilst producing modest results at best at AFL level. Did he win us any games? Did he do anything to warrant being on a list for 7 seasons? No.

Be honest Wizard, would you not rather have a young midfield player that is performing well at a high level with a seasoned body than a (seemingly) always unavailable ordinary midfielder?

Pearce showed that he has better skills than Gilmore last year. End of story.

Silvagni and Barlow have only just arrived at Freo and yet both are pushing for selection. That is a far greater opsition to be in than what Freo have had in the past. In all honesty that is what a team like Freo need when we have injuries, we had such an awful run in 2009. Thank God we had players like we did on the Rookie list.

The question that you need to answer Wizard is; "Who would you rahter have on the list for team balance and overall depth?" Head, Gilmore and Browne or Slivagni, Barlow and Pearce? I know who I would rather have!

I'm not saying i'd rather these guys at all, what i'm saying is everyone needs to tone back the expectations on these guys at the moment.
Majority of the guys mentioned have done absolutely NOTHING to this point so getting excited by what they potentially have to offer at this stage is silly and giving unneeded pressure to these guys.

I'm sure Silvagni and Barlow will be very good players, but i'm not ready tog et out the annointing oil just yet.

Pearce, to my eye at least, seems to have really worked hard on his kicking of late. Far better trajectory and carry.
Of course, this is yet to be proven in the heat of battle.

none of us can know what depth we have until these untried players are tested in the heat of an afl match. having said that, i cant imagine any three of our new recruits being as bad as gilmore, head and browne as each were terrible players. im happy that we have these new guys on our list but wont conceed we have better "depth" untill i see what they can do at afl level.

clancee pearce in my mind is a much better player than gilmore already, as i think his skills are solid without being sensational, but more importantly he has a footy brain and seems to have a hardness about him, qualities which gilmore never showed. there is more to footy than being able to kick the ball 60 meters

For mine,Pearce is a much better kick than what people give him credit for.He very seldom misses a target when passing.His kicking style is not pretty but it is effective.He drops the ball close to his boot so regardless of what the weather is he will always have accuracy with his kicking.

Wizard's right in that people get excited about what players might do instead of what they have done.

Michael Warren is a very good WAFL key defender but failed at AFL level and there's no guarantee that Silvagni won't do the same.

Browne spend 8 seasons on the Fremantle list so someone obviously rated him.

That said I'm a Clancee fan. Think he just needs to grow into his body, don't know what he weighed 3 years ago but I'd imagine he didn't have tree trunk legs at 15-16 so even if he spends most of the year playing for Swannies I think he showed glimpses last year.

It isnt the fact that its an ugly kicking style, the problem is the kicking style leads to many miss kicks, helicopters and floaters.
