Disastrous Recruiting decisions

From the 2010 AFL Prospectus:
- Career highs in disposals, contested possessions, marks and clearances
- 4th in B&F
- 1st at club for score assists, 2nd in inside 50s, effective kicks and goal assists, 3rd in marks, 5th in disposals and contestes possessions.

Doesn't sound like racking up cheap possies across half back to me. He also played 20 games in the season for the record.

I could play 20 games for the tigers and have those stats ..they are hardly world beating stuff.

I'd be the first one to hang crap on the Tigers and I still rib them about picking up Tambling ahead of Buddy and Ninthmond is always funny, but with those stats it easily proves:

a) He wasn't picking up cheap ones across half back as Woosh is so fond of saying, and

b) Despite the club being toss this year, someone still had to do the hard yards, which Tambling clearly did. Being 1st and 2nd in score and goal assists respectively and 2nd in inside 50s indicates an influential player offensively.

If you want to give shit to someone, better have the stats to back it up otherwise you just look like you have egg on your face.

some of you blokes are showing how young you are..... havent read all the posts but has anyone mentioned....

1 - 2X Norm smith medalist, 2X premiership player, all australian, club champion, 300+ games A MCLEOD for Chris Groom - Thanx FREO:D

also

2 - which club traded a future 2X premiership captain to Geelong...PORT:eek:

Fremantle trade pick 1(Luke Hodge), 20(some hack) , 36(Sam Mitchell) to Hawthorn for Trent Croad and McPharlin. Croad plays 38 games for Freo over 2 Seasons. Freo then trade Croad back to Hawthorn for Pick 10(Ryley Dunn) who was delisted at the end of 2008 after playing just 5 games.

Hawthorn got a premiership captain, a norm smith medalist and a good premiership player.

Freo got McPharlin. Who has been an average player for them. Who defently hasn't set the world on fire.

Now that is one big **** up.:D

Pretty damn impressive if he really got 18.2

Almost 3 levels above Simon Black. If you've never done a beep test before, at that top level it goes impossibly fast.

RoJo would've had to cover 20 metres over about 3 seconds

Apparently Shane Crawford finished it, can anyone confirm it??

I think losing Greg Williams the the Swans because we didn't want to give him an extra $5K (bit hazy on the exact sum as I hadn't been born then) would go very close to Geelong's biggest stuff up.

But I'd have to give it to hiring Gary Ayres as coach. He took over one of the best teams in the league and when we finally got rid of him he handed over a rabble.

I highly doubt it's true. Every eagles player is a bulletproof superhuman according to the deluded fanboi nonsense that spews from Naitawhoey's keyboard.

Being a conspiracy theorist - i'd say Naitawhoey is a dockers supporter doing his best to sully our names.

Either that or he is only just older than the chardonnay that gets served in the Billy Walker room.

There's never been a confirmed report of anyone completing the beep test. Beckham alledgedly did it, and Lance Armstrong, but these have been dispelled.

It goes up to level 23... it would take some kind of cyborg to do that. Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if a decathlete or Carl Lewis could have/did completed it.

Yeah, due to the way the AFL recorded the trade, it looks like that, but that was actually part of a complicated 3 club trade (IIRC) that landed us Motlop.

It's the same as saying we gave up picks 24, 40 and 56 for Jay Nash this season. It didn't really happen like that.

Yeah, ditto Scott Welsh when he went from North to Adelaide. Officially recorded as the Roos being bent over and receiving half a ham sandwich for his compassionate return home, when in reality they got compensated with a superfluous first rounder as part of the extended Matthew Clarke deal.

Nathan Lonie ftw though!!11

if you've never ****ed up you know **** all.

The Andrew Lovett situation made me think.

All clubs have a few recruiting decisions they would prefer not to think about. Which recruiting decision was the biggest setback to your club?

For Saints probably most would say Lovett but I don't think that is going to have the long term impact that swapping Ian Stewart for Billy Barrett had. That decision cost us a couple of flags I reckon.

What recruiting decisions have cost your club most dearly?

Which particular flag did this cost you? 1974 when you finished 10th or 1975 when you finished 6th?

that's harsh, who else were you going to get who was any good in Janruary as a compensation pick after the unfortunate death of Troy Broadbridge.

but Groom for McLeod as a bad decision. Poor Freo :(

hindsight is a wonderful thing

however at the time trading a young midfielder who refused to play for you for a promising key forward wasn't that bad on the face of things. 40+ goals from an 18 year old in the sanfl is a fair effort

the result is woeful - the decision making at the time wasn't that bad

perhaps i just look at it with rose tinted glasses because groom took us to a flag in 95

Geelong had some howlers in the 90's.

1990 - Geelong took Stephen Hooper at pick 1, our only number one draft pick in history. Jason McCartney was snared 3 picks later, while amazingly James Hird was picked up at pick 79.

1991 - Geelong take Leigh Willison at pick 11. Shane Crawford is picked up at pick 13.

1993 - Geelong take David Ugrinic at pick 13. Not only did we keep the guy on our list for about three years while he stayed in Adelaide, but Adam Simpson went at pick 14. In the same draft, we picked up David Innella at pick 38. Matthew Lappin was picked up at pick 40.

1996 - Geelong take Leigh Brockman at pick 8. Nathan Brown was picked up 2 picks later.

1997 - Geelong grab Joel McKay at pick 15. Brisbane gleefully grabbed Simon Black at pick 31.

In the 2003 post season the Dogs did the following:

3 way deal with Essendon and Hawthorn effectively being:

  • Nathan Brown and Mark Alvey for Lochlan Veale + Pick 20

  • Pick 20 ontraded for Peter Steet

  • Pick 19 (our own pick) traded for Steven Koops

  • Part of "Veale Deal" was that Jade Rawlings got through to the PSD where we drafted him pick #1

Veale was never really expected to be any be any good but we would have been hoping for a lot more from Street, Koops and Rawlings. We were lucky the draft was shit and so it probably didn't hurt too badly (who knows who Clayton would have picked though).

Looking at what it could have possibly been though:
Keep Brown (I know he wanted to go:mad:), keep pick 19 (was David Mundy), Jade Rawlings gets traded somewhere else and we instead have to draft Nick Stevens instead (oh no!!). I know which option would have been better although we probably wouldn't have then finished low enough to get Griffen and Williams who can still hopefully help us get a flag.
This was the trade that we got Pick 6 out of and proceeded to use that pick 6 on one Kepler Bradley?

Rowan Jones was the awesome. Without him we dont win the 2006 flag. The guy did a 18.2 beep test which is technically one of the best ever recorded beep tests (best in the AFL by a mile)
When did he do this? West coast beep test record is held by Dalzeill of all players at just over 16.

letting Carey go for nix.
Passing on Hird
More recent times 98 was a horror with hindsight. Ignoring the locals and taking Nic Fosdike from Norwood and Ryan Fitzgerald from South Adelaide in 98. We must've had a hardon for South Aussies that yr (or guys from anywhere other than NSW/ACT) taking Fosdike at 3 and Fitzgerald at 4. Then Jude Bolton from vic at 8...solid pickup.
Ignored three other locals too that yr ...Mark McVeigh, Nick Davis and Craig Bolton. Ray Hall a late pick went to the tiges. Hayes went at 11 and would probably have ended up Syd captain over the last 3-5 yrs if drafted.

But hey...Brissy picked Des Hedland at 1 that yr...and in an often overlooked recruting bonanza Freo took Justin Longmuir at 2 in '98...they started their pathetic recruitiment history nice and early. Carlton used pick 6 on Murray Vance. Come to think of it we werent the only ones that yr :thumbsu:
