Just reading a thread on the main board where a lot people are saying they'd take Martin if he was available as the best U/20 in the league. Only two went for Cotch - one was a Richmond supporter. Personally I think Cotch will be our best player in 3 years time (nearly there now) and stay as our best for a while, with Martin, Deledio, Riewoldt and the like as more than handy back up.

So the question goes out to Tiger fans: Will Cotchin or Martin be better?

Impossible choice... so great that we have both of these boys as they complement each other with different styles of play.

I was only just thinking today how my perception and expectation of Cotchin has changed this year, in what, only 11 games.
2 years ago and last year when he played, in my mind he was just a kid who had some pre-season injury issues so any good form was a bonus at that stage.
Now he has played only 36 games and is still a 20yo yet to me he essentially runs our midfield and I see him bashing in there with 25-28 year old mids and taking charge around the ground.

Extremely impressive... :thumbsu: :thumbsu:

Martin? Well he is just a bull... a machine and only 18 years old and 11 games into his career. I have already embarrassed myself a number of times in anticipation at how unstopable he will be in a couple of years. :thumbsu: :thumbsu:

I can not chose between these two & I will not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agreed tugga, except I think Cotch is the once in a generation player. Just glad to have them both.:thumbsu:
Can't argue with that either. Both are outstanding. Martin is a ****ing bulldozer.

My only concern is that they are both still very young and are playing as our number 1 & 2 inside mids. That's a lot of bash and crash and we all know how much of a toll that took on poor old Luke Ball. Our boys are more physically mature and less kamikaze than Ball, but still I hope they are managed sensibly and not allowed to flog themselves to death just because they know no other way.

Cotch needs to get his zip back to achieve his full potential. Hopefully his achilles will not be damaged by playing and the reports that it's an issue that will not last past the age of 21-22 are spot on. I'd hate to see him reduced to a stock horse when he has the ability to win a Cox Plate.

I can't decide between the two.

Both offer different skills to the team, and I am happy we have them.

I think Cotch would've been a better player if he didn't miss some of pre-season.

That's why I believe that these two players may be rested throughout the season. Now, they are getting the chance to get some game play and experience for the future.

Both are expected to improve significantly , Cotch is experiencing regular tagging and having an impact from an interrupted pre-season. The only query ever on him has been his ability to beat a tag.
On Saturday when given little attention in the first quarter Martin had 14 possies, 6 for the rest of the game once givena little more attention. As he gains more experience you'd expect that to improve.
Quite easy to see these two blokes averaging 25 -30 possies next year with full pre-seasons, get similar numbers out of Foley we'll be a very , very good side !!
Our midfield is all upside !

precisely.
i was just thinking along these lines the other day...we've got cotchin and martin, both absolutely elite midfielders in the making, and foley, who the game has all but forgotten about at the moment.
those 3 players i believe can complement each other beautifully in future...throw in lids occasionally, jackson as our tagger, an in form (hopefully) tambling, and maybe another gun in pick 4 (or 6 ;)) this year, and we'll dominate.
also not to be forgotten that these guys are under the wing of ben cousins, and every training session with him has to be absolute gold! :)

just as a further note...i voted for martin.
i read a stat just before the weekend which blew my mind
richmond - leading clearances in the league...as the bottom side.

the kid is a ****ing star :thumbsu:

That's a bit like asking which of the Barbie twins you'd most like to bone.
Personally I think Martin will be a once in a generation player.

So you want to bone Martin then haha.

To early to tell here really. Both good players for different reasons. Give me Martin as well.

Sounds strange but this is a problem for us. We have a bad habit of just throwing the ball on the boot from clearances and have it landing in the hands of an opposition player dropping back. Martin doesn't do this - but Tuck certainly does and Cotch does a bit as well. We need to stop.

We're better off trying to handball our way out of trouble (like Martin does) than turn it over and get burnt the other way.

I was watching the Eagles replay today and it stood out that because West Coast doesn't really put people behind the ball as much, we got away with it. Against most other teams, we don't.
