I thought he really struggled with the pace of the game tonight. His first 3 quarters it looked like he was running on the spot and certainly not committing to any contests. His last quarter, however, he played with more intensity I thought, and had a few redeeming moments.

I'm just not sure he is going to make it at this level. Is that too harsh a judgment at this early stage?

actually thought he had a decent game, definetly has a good footy brain but needs to bulk up- will be a good player:)

Rubbish. The knock on him is whether he is good enough to win one on one against his man when isolated in the back 50. Was good enough to break evenin those contests tonight. Was also good at hitting targets by foot tonight.

It is amazing how often you post things that make no sense

Ok, CrowMo... I appreciate you have a different view. However, if you should watch the game again... watch his lack of attack when the ball is near him. Watch him run almost backwards. Then, re-read what I wrote when I said "His last quarter, however, he played with more intensity I thought, and had a few redeeming moments."

To me he looked like a "deer in headlights" for much of the night.

Wasn't he playing on Davey? Killed him I thought.

His kicking is tremendous.

Handballing and marking needs work. Laughed that he was in the Record interview and was asked "Whats you best mark?" and he said, none, I am not very good at it!!

An elite kick will see him thrive at this level.

He did play on Davey and reduced Davey's impact on the game and provide a little run from defense. He will be a quality player for us for many years to come.

You obviously watched the game to watch only Armstrong so you could come on here and bag the kid. He's got more talent than half the poot powerless team especially that danyle pearce and is harder that justine westhoff. He is just a kid and is still learning so get off is back.

I thought he was really good, actually.

Started shaky but to come back and play a gerat last three quarters is a credit to the kid. A lot of players in their first few games would let it get to them and keep making mistakes, but Tony didn't let it faze him.

His kicking is simply sublime, he's clever in congestion and he hurts the opposition with his skills. Even his 1-on-1 work tonight was really solid. He made a few errors but overall I thought he did well. :thumbsu:

Sure, made a few mistakes and did a few good things. Leave him in the side.

Yes, I certainly wouldn't drop him - unless of course we had say Bock coming back in. Just didn't think he looked quite in the mix tonight. Happy to watch the game again and re-assess though.

Actually that's not fair. I very rarely highlight player's shortcomings. It just felt, for me, that tonight every time he was near the ball for much of the game, he wasn't doing anything. You will also notice that I asked the question "was I being too harsh".

He looks a little bit shaky in the one on ones at times, but he more than makes up for it with his poise when he's got the ball in his hands, his decision making is excellent and he's got a beautiful kick. His confidence in one on one contests will only get better as he improves his strength over the next pre-season.

I really think we've got a player on our hands here, can't wait to see him carving it up with Johncock AND Petrenko, there's some real class and run between those three guys!

He does look shaky in the one on ones, but has he ever really been beaten.

Opposition sides are trying to isolate him deep though.

Would like to see him get a run on the wing at some stage.

There were a few contests last night where he definitely didn't show a 'Walker-like maturity for the contest'. He'll need to work on that to become as good as his skills should enable him to be. Will it come with more strength? Will more strength come? Dunno - but he is no wanganeed, johncock or petrenko when it comes to his ability to throw his smaller frame into a contest.

For what its worth I reckon he WILL make it. Keep playing him and reinforce the expecatation about attacking the ball and ball-carrier.

I tend to agree that it wasn't his best game. He got caught out a couple of times and seemed a step off the pace at some stages of the game. I do think it odd that you would want to question his ability to play this level of football based on that though. He is playing his 8th game and it was probably the worst he has played. So why would you make a call on whether he can make it based on that?

he's still really skinny, which makes it hard for him to stick a tackle, ie, like Phil Davis (but i was impressed with Davis wrapping up Gumby and throwing him to the ground - though Davis seemed to outbody the bigger/stronger Gumby most times).

I think he's done a good job of tackling. Despite his small frame he manages to of wrap his arms around an opponent. While he struggles to lay a real strong, Phil Davis-esque, tackle at least he is putting pressure on the opposition.

In his seven games he's had 15 tackles including four last night against the Bombers.

Thanks for that analysis. It seems I was a bit hasty... and I actually thought that I might be at the time of the OP (hence the bit harsh question), but it was something that stood out - perhaps moreso last night, when everyone else seemed to be going into contests hard and he didn't.

He does still appear to panic a bit in close but hopefully he'll get confidence the more games he plays. His footskills are very good, unfortunately his handballing skills at this time are very ordinary. All in all in my eyes he has gone from a player that I seriously doubted would make it in the AFL to a real live chance given more time to develop. :thumbsu:

Look, he's still not amazing in the contested situations, but I think he's slowly improving week to week in this respect, I thought he showed some really good signs in some contests last night, which made me think "gee, he wouldn't have done that a couple of weeks ago", give him some time to adjust to this level and I think we'll have a quality HBF/winger on our hands.
