Re: Lions Drafting Discussion 2010.

Caddy supports the Roos I think, but his dad is hardcore Fitzroy & Brisbane.

I've rated him for a while, but I think the club will probably think we are overspending with 4/6.

If we could secure another pick in the mid-late teens through a trade I'd love for us to get him though.

If he continues to dominate in the TAC Cup though (allegedly took Atley to school on the weekend)... he may rocket up the pecking order.
Ok cheers. Yes he did. BOG! Yeah I think we could be overspending with an early pick like that to but the only reason why I suggested this is because that guy told me that he heard from an inside source that a club will take him with there first pick if avaliable and they will be in the top 10 or something along those lines so I thought it might be us!

Cheers.

Yeah, even if he slides big time, he won't get past Collingwood's first pick. They've been keen on him for a long time.

Based on?

He signed a new contract last year.

Based on nothing just a feeling, Dockers and Eagles would both be intereseted IMO. I hope he doesn;t go though./

Mitch loves Brisbane and loves the club. He's married to a local girl and they have a house and child.

He would be at the very bottom of my list of "flight risks".

Re: Lions Drafting Discussion 2010.

Surely Armitage is off to the Gold Coast?

Re: Lions Drafting Discussion 2010.

A bit off topic, but 'On the Couch' last night, Hirdy was going about we sacrificed youth, and that we gave up picks 12 and 27, didn't we draft Bartlett with 27?

Re: Lions Drafting Discussion 2010.

We really need to go after a KPF or KPB in this draft. I doubt Sherman will be traded but I think it would be good for him. Worse things is we get nothing for the likes of Riska and Brennan if they leave..

Re: Lions Drafting Discussion 2010 (no trade talk)

Sorry to bring this thread almost full-circle but I was onto Josh Caddy before the u18 champs and his star just continues to rise and he is rocketing towards top 10 status.

Noticed a few people pulling out the Daniel Rich "is he a man-child peaking too soon" questions on him but geez he is the type we need. Genuine clearance winning midfielder, knows how to use his body to his advantage, good awareness in traffic, tough as old boots, brings teammates into the game and loves to go forward and kick a goal.

Offers us genuine flexibility as a mid or forward.

Would be very happy if we took him with our first pick, even if groupthink would have us "overspending" by a few places. Just a great set of attributes and there is just something about him that screams Brisbane Lion.

Yes Vossy loves this type and I can just see us taking him with our first pick. Can play from round 1 onwards to.

Re: Lions Drafting Discussion 2010 (no trade talk)

If we decide that drafting a project key position forward is the way to go what would you prefer?

1. Taking a young player from an existing AFL list that hasn’t done as well as he should have and has been delisted
2. Mature aged recruit
3. Someone from Australia who has had little AFL experience but looks a likely type
4. An international rookie

With the games speed increasing (or though it may slow down a tad with future changes) and kicking such an important factor what is the likely hood that a big man from outside the AFL circle will succeed?

Re: Lions Drafting Discussion 2010 (no trade talk)

Fair question Nuggo. As much as our midfield is a shambles, I think we also need to think about our next generation elite key forward. I haven't seen enough yet to believe that Cornelius is the man, and Retzlaff, as promising as he is, is still very, very raw.

This won't make me popular with some (Vidman comes to mind) but if we took a key forward like Jack Darling with our first pick I would understand completely.

Geez I'd love it if we could find a way to upgrade our second pick into a pick around the 15-20 range. We could potentially then get Darling at 6 and then a promising mid like Parker, Green, Harper, Lamb or, if a miracle occurred, Caddy with our next pick.

Re: Lions Drafting Discussion 2010 (no trade talk)

Yeah good idea TBD.

Hopefully we can upgrade some picks or get some good picks by trading players.

I'd be great if we could get any two of Gaff, Atley, Darling, Caddy, Harper, Green etc.

Re: Lions Drafting Discussion 2010 (no trade talk)

It is the problem we could be looking at in 3 years or so. If our midfield doesn't come along nicely, we will be stuck with average mids and average KPP. Most teams get away by focusing on having elite players in one area, then having some solid players in the other to back them up. With Brown and Fev going soon, as well as our elite midfield players, we really need to get the forcast right. I think our draftees from 08 onwards are going to be very very important. The next 2 years of drafting could shape our team for the next 10 years.

I worry, like TBD, that as promising as Acorn and Retzlaff are, they may not be top level players. That leaves us very thin with KPP, and if our current crop of mids don't turn out, we will be in all sorts of problems.

Im never in the know with the draftees, so i always enjoy coming into the off season, learning about the potential new players and seeing who we are likely to get.

Re: Lions Drafting Discussion 2010 (no trade talk)

I am on the stocka side of the debate. Quality mids first thanks.

Re: Lions Drafting Discussion 2010 (no trade talk)

KPD wise -With Staker, Patfull, Merrett and Maguire all around 26 years old hopefully they should all have at least 4 quality seasons left. After this our developing stocks may be a little thin with minor question marks over Collier, presuming McCulloch is more a ruck prospect. I also presume McKeever is an unknown at this stage of his development.

Potentially Clark may be looked at as a CHB (or CHF) if McCauley comes on.

Interesting we don't talk about high draft pick KPD so much as forwards or mids- are they typically more later round picks, or generally clubs furnish their backlines with forwards that haven't shown promise?

Probably easier to find a gem later in the draft. Quite a lot of the big name tall defenders were later (ie not 1st round) draft picks. Only a few were taken in the 1st round - Glass and Frawley spring to mind.

Re: Lions Drafting Discussion 2010 (no trade talk)

I actually really like TBD's and Axels idea of trying to upgrade our Second pick into another pick in the teens. It could mean that we could get a player like Atley or Gaff and one of Caddy, Parker, Harper, Darling and Green!

So we would obviously have to trade our Second pick and a player for this to happen. So what would you think could get us a another pick inside the teens TBD? What player to go with the Second pick. Im thinking targetting one of GC's pick in the teens like 11, 13 or 15!

So what player and our second round pick do you think will get us another pick inside the teens!
