while most of us could not fault our defensive pressure endevour commitment etc the thing that stood out was the difference, to use a hardwick euthemism polish.
while we have blokes who have a real go and we have improved in areas we won in many important areas of the game today but it counted for little.

i still remember mick malthouse earlier in the yr proclaiming melb really won the drawn game because their system and overall skills allowed them to use the ball better than collingwood despite collingwood generating many more scoring shots.

today we were more than competetive but in critical areas the chasm was huge.

Turnovers and skill errors cost us alot. It seems we can't get our zone right in time after a turn over which seems to cost us quite a few goals. Though when we had our zone in place the Demons did have some difficulty getting it out of out 50, hopefully over this coming pre season we are able to work on it more and better perfect at a point which doesn't cost us so much from skill errors.

Main differences:
-We dont have a forward line
-We dont have enough midfielders to account for injuries
-We have the worst defensive gameplan in the AFL. Our defenders are good our gameplan isn't.

i could go along with the first two but the third is wrong. our defenders are ordinary.

We're poor at defending when playing the zone defence. When it's man-on-man, we're decent. Hardwick is playing half of the game with zone, half with man-on-man. We need to learn his structure at some point. The season is shot. Why not now?

The difference: Nathan Foley, Trent Cotchin, Andy Collins and Big Ben Griffths

AND....

JORDAN MCMAHON haha could have kicked another match winner (NOT)

Realistically if the above 3 were playing I believe we would have knocked off Melb, but hey every team has injuries and suspensions I guess..

And according to Gary March today, we are only in the first phase of the game plan and the next phase will be rolled out next season. Im wondering if that will have something to do with the zoning he is employing. He did say at the start of the year that he wanted to teach the players defensive setups before offensive ones.

The biggest improvement we could make would be a ready made key forward. Someone like Roughead or Kennedy would be ideal. Kennedy is off the boil at the moment and the Eagles have said they will be very active in trade period.

foley cotchin and collo surely woulda been worth 3-4 goals

By the same token though you could argue that Grimes, Moloney and Petterd would have added another 3-4 to us.

I was surprised to see how far the Tigers have come since the start of the season. You guys should be proud of the way your club has performed this year. I have absolutely no doubt that in a couple of years the Tigers will be playing finals and doing very well.

You know, one day when we win the flag by 5 goals you are still going to be pissed off because we didn't win by ten.

For once it would be nice to hear something from you that is not negative Santa. Give it a try Santa. You'll be a better person and poster for it.

at the end of the day its all about score board pressure dude. I spew when we lose, i spew big time when we lose what we should have won. We had control for 80% of the game. Our first quarter should have put the game in our grasp big time. We didnt capitalise and it all comes down to our FL structure. It will come together sooner rather than later if and when we have real deal replacements in the KPP positions. Would have loved to have a Griff out there this week. They are all going gaga at Frawleys game on JR. WTF? JR was being double ane tripled teamed 99% of the time. In desperation Damien had to throw Thurst down there with limited effect.
Not to fussed about the loss, they had 10 mintues of fun in the sun that translated to goals, unlike us in the first quarter and a half.

Your reference to the chasm is total BS. We were toying with them in the most part and they only got a look in on the breaks after we gifted the ball to them, not because they pressured it from us.

Looking at the overall make up of the teams, we are streets ahead in what we are gunning for in the future. We had 2 young ruckmen who are still developing up against 2 dinosaurs that the dees have pinnned their hopes on for the future. Those 2 goof balls have been and remain on the verge of dudsville and from what was shown on the weekend our upside is immeasurably greater than theirs. ;)

The only difference is

12 MONTHS

12 months to get more games and some weights into Griffiths, Astbury, Nason, Hicks, Webberley etc
12 months of further understanding and confidence in the game plan.
A cleanout of half a dozen players and some quality draft picks.
If Griffiths and Cotchin were playing yesterday we probably would have won. This would have given us the 2nd tall forward we needed to take a couple of marks and release the pressure on Reiwoldt. Cotchin would have been the sealer

I would say the same as was written in the Herald Sun article. At least 12 months development. Also we had players down yesterday, Jack well held and it had to be Tuck's lowest output for sometime playing in an unusual role . Dees were much more polished and took their chances, we should have scored more goals early and built a decent lead, and the final margin flattered Melbourne it has to be said. In saying all this, credit where credit's due, Melbourne play some bloody good footy when they get it right for a young team.

when they are allowed to. It will always be their downfall, you got to play some bloody good footy when the heat is on, not when the heat is off from a young side who couldnt keep the heat on for 100 minutes. Stay tuned, dont get sucked into the media hype that has surrounded melbourne and Jimmy's plight. I can categorically state it right now, they are competitive for about 3 years tops, with who they rely on and who they hope to rely on. ;)

It was actually quite enjoyable to watch Melbourne yesterday. There were times when their ball movement and skills were among some of the best I've seen a team pull out of the bag this year. If they're X amount of months ahead of us, so be it, I CANNOT wait to see how we are X amount of months from now then if some of the form Melbourne showed yesterday is any indicator.

Difference yesterday was Melbournes experienced players. Green, Davey, Sylvia, Bruce and Jamar were their best players. Frawley and Scully were good but these older players are playing the important roles and holding the team together. They could even afford to tag Martin with thier captain.

Having said all that to be up 48 I50's to 30 at 3qtr time and be down is disappointing. If we'd taken our chances the game should have been close to over by 3qtr time.

Two core reasons why we lost IMO.

1) We could not turn enough forward 50 entries into goals... call it scoreboard pressure if you like but + Demons were allowed to crowd our front half but the end result was we got ZERO 'easy' goals.

2) Deledio, Connors & to a lesser extent Newman all had below par days. Over the past few weeks we have enjoyed excellent numbers & quality delivery out of the backline from these 3 whereas yesterday, all 3 were down on form.

Credit to The Demons for applying pressure in defense and having the skills and run to hurt us a number of times with transition goals but I reckon they were pretty happy to get a 29 point margin in the end.

Cogga, I'm not saying they are the next Geelong and they were lucky to fall in over an undermanned and out of form Brisbane last week. And IMO we let them off the hook a bit yesterday, but they have at times shown some really good football this year.

they have, but watching the game yesterday IMO, we move it better in terms of close in stuff. Our game is going to be supremely better once the young kids iron out the mistakes, which are steadily being ironed out. When it comes to moving the ball under pressure, our game is so much more in tune with what is required in the modern game, i.e. like the cats, whereas melbourne are more like the bummers. I know which one i would be more confident with going into high pressure finals games. Lets just say this, one player out for them and they are litterally toast. Their whole game relies on one Davies and his run on the breaks. ;)

Realistically if the following were playing

Moloney,Morton,Bate,Gysberts,Petterd & Grimes we would of won by 8-10 goals not five!

realistically you have Johnson and Jamar as your ruckmen that you have pinned your hopes on for the future.
Stay tuned, you will understand what I mean when you spew up that you thought they werent duds when all the signs pointed to them being just that, DUDS. Slow moving and slow thinking dinosaurs that will be shown up for what they are when the heat is applied in the future. Enjoy the ride for now. ;)

While I don't disagree with what you say, I question why we are throwing guys like Thursty forward in desperation???
Look, Hardwick has done an exceptional job first up, but for mine this game was lost at the selection table.
While they were never going to line up that way, when you read the selected team and the HF line reads King Farmer Nason, the Dees are rubbing their hands together.
Jack was double and triple teamed as we gave the Dees no other option but to.
At least by throwing Post in there, or maybe Gourdis, you are making another big body accountable!!!
And the non-selection of Collins was a disgrace ... he's the only guy besides Jack who has been capable of kicking a bag!!!
We got what we deserved by picking a team of short people. We were lucky to get away with it the week before, never amke the same mistake twice!!
