I'd take pick 8, but i'd be pushing for a kicker - maybe a 3rd round pick or a fringe player. They have plenty of them from WA that might want to come home.
In saying that, why would he want to go to Essendon? By the time they get back up and running he's going to be on the verge of retirement.

Money I guess ???

I wouldn't be surprised if Freo pinching Mcphee and Bradley without trading has played a part in them going hard on Mundy.

I can't be bothered going through old threads but Mundy re-signed in mid/late September in 2008.

I think if he does sign the club will be a little bit pissed that there's a 4 week saga every 2 years.

A little bit pissed at his manager. Sure he is trying to get the best for his client but he is being a real C U Next Tuesday about it.

How often do you get a "like for like" trade though? For that to happen we need to find
i) a player of similar worth to Mundy at whichever club he chooses.
ii) that player then has to be out of contract
iii) he also has to want to move to perth.

It happens so rarely. When we lured Bell, Tarrant, Carr etc we didn't swap a player of equal value and it hasn't happened with Warnock, Polak, etc going the other way. Having a player out of contract and looking to head home is a difficult situation and under the circumstances I'd be very happy with pick 8 IF Mundy decides to go back to Victoria.

He does not need to be out of contract, and may be better if he is not.

Pick 8 looks good, but Mundy is a certainty in terms of what a club will get. Give me more!!!

Pick 8 + Houli/Myers would be fine for me.

Usable pick + a fringe player that has potential to become best 22 in our squad. Still rather not lose Mundy

I reckon its about 90% certain hes going to stay

Everyone who leaves always do so very soon after the season ends. If he was going to GC he woulda said so by now. All the GC mercenaries announced very soon after their season ended.

IF he hasnt signed with GC then u would think that freo holds all the chips. With tarrant, des, haselby money being available. I dont think anyone can offer significantly more money than us. Also in his next contract he'd almost qualify for vet status. AFter a breakout season who would want to change clubs, especially if u have the most dominant ruckman stuffing the ball down your throat.

Mundy seems like a decent guy. If he was gonna leave he'd give freo the longest timeframe possible to try and nut out a deal.

Good point.

Don't know if he's a good guy or not but dragging contract negotiations out until days before trade week every 2 years makes you look like a bit of a merchant banker.

Or maybe it is his manager that is dragging out the negotiations each time.

Clubs very rarely offer contracted players for trade though unless they are out of form or have off field issues.

Does free agency come in next season?

Trading contracted players is pretty common in most sports with FA. It's the best way to ensure the club gets compensated.

Good question, I'm not sure but I don't think so.

AFL's in a unique position compared to American sports though because there's no real "go home" factor there where as 80% of AFL players are drafted from 3 cities so each year there are players looking to move home. LeBron's an Ohio boy who just chased a big money offer to move away from Ohio. Free agency will probably affect the 10 Victorian clubs a lot more than the WA and SA teams because Frank from Fitzroy will play for whichever Melbourne based club that offers the most $$$.

Clubs will have to be careful too because the culture is different. Alistair Clarkson took a potshot at essendon last year for trading premiership players almost a decade ago. It's very hard to play the loyalty card with Matthew Pavlich while you're trading his contracted mates away each year.

Good luck with that. More likely pick 8 OR Myers and Houli.

I agree with this. Myer and Houli would be a good deal.

I think IbbosBFF meant 8 + either of Houli or Myers, not both...

I would be uneasy with accepting just 8. I would hope we can do better than that. Get in the ear of Ryder or Gumby, then take it from there.

Maybe pull in a favour from a journo somewhere and have them to suggest Paddy's a little homesick... You know, the same sort of BS rumour we get with Pav all the time...

I do.

Pick 8 + Houli
Pick 8 + Myers
Myers + Houli

All fine by me, the club does keep saying they want a player to work with in return at this point so........

Myers has been underwhelming but clubs very rarely cut their losses on top ten picks after 3 years. Ryan Murphy's had 7 seasons and was pick 12.

He's not worth it but Essendon would expect a top 20 pick for Myers so in their view 8 + 20 will be over the odds for Mundy.

I'd rather have pick 8 in a straight swap than Myers + Houli. If Mundy departs and we get a quality tall at 8, a mid at 20 and a running player that can play stints onball for Taz I'll be happy.
