Re: Commenwealth Games Would you go ????

Why is that ????
I gave up on the Olympics when they stopped being about sport, now they're about nothing but money. Professionals have no place in the Olympics. I have blackbanned every Olympics since 2000 (including Sydney) from my TV - it's a great chance to catch up on all the DVDs I haven't had time to watch yet.

Sydney was bad enough, particularly with the decision to get Cathy Freeman to light the cauldron. The Freeman thing has nothing to do with racism, it's just that she had done nothing to earn the right to light the cauldron - unlike the 4 other athletes who carried it around the stadium, all of whom had gold medals to their name.

Then the yanks took things way over the top by turning the Olympic cauldron into a french fries packet... Pure farce.

As for the Commonwealth Games, they're a joke. Too much of a big fish/small pond thing happening. Why watch them when you wouldn't watch the Australian Championships in any of the sports?

What unusual reasons.

If you're going to object to watching sports on the basis of crass commercialisation and professionalism you're probably best off abandoning AFL and cricket too.

I avoid the Olympics and Commonwealth games because things like Athletics, Equestrian, Swimming, Diving etc. are fundamentally boring. Not because I object to crass commercialism (which I do).

Re: Commenwealth Games Would you go ????

Nope. After seeing that article about how crap the secruity is on 7 news on Monday (?) where the guy literally walked in with a supposed bomb, I'm worried for the athletes. You'd hope that they'd improve that tenfold.

Re: Commenwealth Games Would you go ????

I wouldn't even go to India to begin with let alone for a non-event like this.

I hope it all goes ahead. Feel so sorry for the people of Delhi. Corrupt decision makes have screwed them over. The people are the ones who will miss out on seeing the better athletes, will be left with the stigma of being labelled a filthy, basketcase city who couldn't even organise anything properly and will end up paying back the money that has been squandered for years and years.

it was funny watching on ACA and Mediawatch how they showed the whole story was a crock of sh*t.... the checkpoint that he walked throu was only a car check point, so anyone can walk through as the pedestrian one was further ahead. and when he bought the suitcase he told the guy he wanted it because he had glass he wanted to take home and the foam inside would ensure they dont break.

The games so far have been, to quote Roy and HG, a toilet.

Empty stadiums, the swimming stadium starting to crumble, and cases of Delhi Belly in the athletes village.

At least Glasgow won't have much to do to make a better games in 2014 :D

rubbish decision and I can't believe they would even contemplate Sri Lanka. At some point world sporting organisations need to realise that its better to be labelled racist than award large sporting tournaments to 3rd world countries.

Why build all these new venues for something that essentially 99% of the general citizenry could never afford to attend. If it wasn't for the fact that international swim teams are very tight knit with (usually) great family support there would be no one watching that either.

Pretty embarrassing when the security, police and games volunteers outnumber all spectators and not surprising. Look at the World Cup in the West Indies.

Apparantly at one stage during the Australia v Trinidad & Tobago hockey match the players outnumbered the specators, until a late rush saw the attendance blow out to 80!

There were 45 in attendance for the Australia v Samoa netball match - the players had to get the media to create some noise in the arena. The match again India (which we won 113-18) only had a slightly larger attendance.

And the games become even more farcical with the athletics track STILL not ready http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport...cs-track-slammed/story-fn65x6j4-1225934708763

And the Indians like and are pretty good at hockey. They tend to appreciate it in the same way they will watch cricket, if you can't get them to hockey you aren't going to get them to much.

I've been lucky enough to be at 2 grand finals, 3 preliminary finals, the World cup cricket final in 1992, and more 80,000+ Collingwood / Carlton / Essendon type games, tests, ODI's and 20/20s than I can remember at the MCG over the past 20 years.

I've also been to MLB, NBA, NFL and English premier league soccer games, Wimbledon, and numerous Australian Opens, and seen the Socceroos and the Wallabies live. And I've seen the Tour de France on Bastille Day when Laurent Jalabert threw down a great challenge to Miguel Indurain.

The atmosphere when Kerryn McCann and Koskei of Kenya ran into the MCG was the single greatest sporting spectator moment of my life. I have never, ever heard such a noise, and never will again.

It was the single best sporting atmosphere I've ever had the honour to be a part of.

So while I'm not in Delhi, I'd go to the Commonwealth Games in a heartbeat if I had the chance.

Excuses were flowing afterwards too. Mind you a legit excuse is not something to be sneezed at - if he's had shit preparation it's obviously going to affect him. Hope he gets it together at some stage.

The mens 50m freestyle semi's descended into farce tonight.

First, Australian Ashley Callus was disqualified for false starting. Replays showed it was a clear break and it he accepted the decision.

Then in the second semi, two swimmers false start. One of the false starters, South Africa's Roland Schoeman chucks a tanty poolside and they let both false starters compete. Schoeman finishes third and qualifies in the final. Then in a interview, he calls the crowd a bunch of monkeys, blaming them for his false start.

Expect a protest from Callus - not necessarily for his reinstatement but for Schoeman's disqualification. Hopefully Schoeman gets expelled from the games for his comments too, consideing the uproar over the Dikshit comments.

After which an Indian Games official acknowledged that there were indeed a lot of monkeys around the swimming venue but the officials were doing their utmost to keep them out of the stadium. Tremendous. If that bloke was taking the piss he should be made PM .... but I suspect he wasn't.

I wonder if an Australian had made that comment they would have made the same mistake, and the issue would be blown off like this

The final insult was that Schroepel ended up winning a silver - albeit a tainted silver.

Didn't see that story, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Also, bad luck to Sally Pearson in the 100m, just a bit rough on what they did to her. The whole event has been a disaster so far.
