Guys/gals...obviously Telstra has the best reception but who else has good reception and who should I avoid? Currently with TPG which piggybacks the Optus network but am going the Iphone and will get it in a plan. Should I spend a bit extra for Telstra service or are some of the other providers reasonable from the reception perspective. I don;t do a lot of country trips.

iPhone on Telstra is very competitive.

In fact, they are probably the best value, as long as you do a couple things:
- remove the data component from your cap plan (eg: $49 plan is $39 calls + $10 data)
- add a bonus data pack at half price (special offer to Nov 1)

if we're purely talking price, then nothing goes past optus for the iphone.

$59 gives me free calls to optus, free text to any network, plus $550 of calls.

but back onto topic...

i'd say:

1. Telstra

daylight

2. Optus.
3. Vodafone
4. Three

and yes i know voda/three are one in the same now, but thats how i would have ranked their networks prior to this happening

If you live in Tassie you have no hope in hell but to go for Telstra as nothing else seems to work very well at all. In saying that Telstra can be pretty bad down here too, there are many "black spots" and I don't live that far away from dear old Launceston and within my own house Im constantly losing reception, some times in a matter of cm's

If you live on either coasts its worse!!

However, I have noticed that Telstra plans are becoming much better which is a relief (as again no real choice here!).

Things were pretty good for me also until the Voda merge.

Since then, 3G reception has not been very good.
This, I rarely get more than a bar or 2 these days. In the lounge room I used to get full bars and now it's just crap.

Also have trouble when I am on full bars where the internet is ridiculously slow.

All of my friends and I use 3 and have never had a problem. Good caps, good phones and good prices. One friend has an iPhone with them, always pretty good reception. Vodaphone is terrible, never tried Optus and Telstra is good but I hate the company itself.

If you live in the western suburbs, don't go near Optus. Its shite.

+1. Optus is yuck for service on my Iphone.

As soon as my contract is up Optus is gone and Telstra are getting my business and i am sick of Optarse and its crap reception, as it is only good in the CBD and below par anywhere else.

I've just moved to Vodafone, and I have no complaints with the service.

For some reason I can't get 3G reception at the MCG, but that's the only thing I've noticed about it. Works fine and at good speeds (for browsing etc.) pretty much all of the time.

I've experienced no problems with getting 3G reception even out in Pakenham and Cranbourne, and from pretty much anywhere between those places and the city. The worst experience I had with my phone was actually BEING in Cranbourne and Pakenham, but I don't think that was the network's fault.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I just haven't had the problems.

Vodafone told me that they'd be past Optus in terms of reception by the end of next year, and equal in 6 months time
i'd be very skeptical about those sorts of network related promises - regardless of which company they came from.

if you go back in 12 months time complaining that your reception still aint better do you reckon that'll get you out of the contract?

Exactly and who actually told you that.... a sales person? Really what clue would he have about the goings on for the vodfone network>

few possibilities:

a) might have been communicated by a manager in some sales meeting - though that person might also have no idea
b) they might have read it in an article somewhere
c) they could be talking crap trying to get a sale
