he looked in agony and the knee certainly looked in the wrong spot

If it's a straight forward patella dislocation then it's not as bad as it could be.
Will be out for a couple of months/rest of season but it's not career threatening. Unlike a knee reco.
Hopefully no ligament/bony damage.

Needed a spell anyway. Will do him good to get himself mentally straight and will be a blessing in disguise.

Massive stumbling block. Could potentially make him though. He needs to remain hungry, do as much gym work as he can while he's out and if it's a season ender, prepare himself for a huge pre season. 2011 could well be a write off for Astbury, but it could mean he's ready to fly in 2012.

with any luck he didn't rupture ligaments and might be back in a couple. unfortunate as he needed a stretch of senior games

From what I can understand, his knee dislocated his knee laterally (too the outside of his leg), for this to happen the ligament on the inside of the knee that holds the kneecap in the groove would have to have ruptured. MCL us the most likely case, 3-5 week injury.
With the dislocated kneecap in many cases it is worse than a reconstruction. Future dislocations occur in about 90% of cases.
Hope all goes well for the kid in rehab, not many injuries are worse to recover from.

A real shame for him. You'd imagine it will pave the way for Gourdis, Post and Griffifths to come in and show their worth now.
Before the preseason we had a dearth of KPD's now we're facing a drought.
Good strapping and focused rehab should see him recover well. A reconstruction is a far more involved, damaging injury with a far more invasive surgical repair process.

Not always the case. Both my knees used to dislocate regularly - pobably about 30 times each. I've never needed surgery or had any lig damage and now with some gym work, no problem in years.
That said though, I've seen severe damage occur. Hopefully Astbury will be ok.

Only pretty much leaves Post,Gourdis as KPD left on our list thats available.
Fantastic Oppurtunity for Gourdis to show what he is worth other wise could be curtains on his afl career.
On a side note though : How good has Rance been this year

If it's not an acl it's only a minor career setback. He'll back next year as good as gold
Intial treatment focuses on the R.I.C.E. Principles as well as using a brace to protect the damaged tissues.
Rehabilitation will last for 2-3 months after injury, and you should be able to return to sports in 3-5 months. If conservative treatment fails, you may require surgery.
