Having talked to someone who has closely worked with Roy Laird I am amazed that he has not been considered for an assistant at Port or the Crows. He said that Roy's tactical part of the game is second-to-none .His records itself speaks volumes for him as a coach.
We forever read that Roy has knocked back offers from AFL clubs. My contact refutes this and says he has never been offered a deal at an AFL club. Can someone give me a quote where Roy Laird has actually said he would not entertain the thought of coaching at AFL level. Rooch reads this so maybe he can actually ask him directly.
Here we have a talent that could be very useful in an Adelaide box.
Please just put an offer to him Adelaide before the Power!

He sold my last house, is a great real estate agent, and I hate sales people.

Anyway we got to chatting about footy a bit. He is not a fan of the AFL system. He talked about how the players spend too much time at the clubs in meetings and that they complicate the game too much. He also laments the fact there are too many athletes and not enough footballers in the league.

Would be great to have him as a coach if you were a footballer.

He was on Rowey and Cornsey the other day and said that he's not interested in AFL. I've heard him say it plenty of times before.

Sounds like someone who is content with lapping up success at a second rate level - a more ambitious person would relish the opportunity to put it all on the line and have a crack at doing something considerably more difficult (and more special) than what they're doing right now.

he loves the dogs. he loves winning flags. he has a great career outside of football. he has no interest in the afl. he'd be financially secure from both avenues of income.

sounds like he's content... being content.

If Laird spent a couple of years as an assistant somewhere to enhance his credentials then he could walk into a head coach position when available and do whatever he wants with that club. He either knows that he doesn't have the ability to coach at AFL level, or he thinks he does but is scared of failure.

The "hates AFL" excuse is an almighty copout.

Thats a load of crap, not everyone has to like AFL or aspire to be an AFL coach.

If Laird thinks that the AFL system is crap, then he can make a more valuable contribution to football by giving it a good shake up, and I'd certainly like to see him do this. Sitting atop his blue, red and white throne pulling the wings off flies and taking pot shots at another system does nothing for nobody (other than Centrals supporters who obviously have a vested interest in keeping him around).

I think your missing the point. He doesnt take pot shots, he rarely speaks to the media at all. Id have no problems if he wanted to up and leave to further his career. But obviously as he has stated he has not intentions at all, has good businesses here, enjoys being able to coach and run these. I dont think hed be able to do AFL and run them.

I kind of see ruscy's point of view.

If Laird was the kind of guy to seek the media and tell us all how good the SANFL is and how great the Doggies are. But he doesn't.

Coaching Centrals is only part of his life. He loves the job but does it more as a labour of love than anythimg. He aint making a career out of football. He is a very professional RE agent. Being an assistant to prove a point would not interest him, nor does putting in the hours an assistant does at AFL level.

And no I aint a Doggies fan at all, far from it.

What's wrong with being happy with where you are at in life. Not everyone wants to be the best in the world at something. He is the best coach at his level and he is happy with that.

lol Norwood

Wake up and smell the reverse psychology folks, geez. How will we ever get Roy ****ing Laird at the AFC if you lot keep patting him on the back for what he's doing now!?

This.

I haven't ever heard him actively knock the AFL. He just says he doesn't take an interest in it.

Likewise re the OP, he has said approximately one thousand times he is not interested in coaching in the AFL.

"I've never contemplated being a senior AFL coach - and I won't. I've always been really happy with the combination of the SANFL and my work. It works for me. I've just been rapt with what I'm doing at Central and have thoroughly enjoyed my involvement there."

"I was never involved in an AFL system (as a player) and, to be honest, I don't take a great level of interest in the AFL - I don't watch a great deal of it. So at this point it's not for me."
