I've got a feeling this time next year we'll all be talking about how awsome Yanni was as the pre-game entertainment...

Just searched through some live performances on youtube, and it appears that Meatloaf has been ordinary live for a long time. All of his 2010/2011 performances were as bad as yesterday. Back in 1998, you can see signs of his voice going, and even in 1987 when he was only 40, he improvised some of his notes.

Seems that he has never been a studio perfect live performer vocally and that the music and the performance overcomes that. Just goes to show how brilliantly engineered the Bat Out of Hell album was. There were clips of a live performance at the time of release but they didn't really do video clips back then so that live performance was probably the engineered studio piece because it was flawless and powerful.

I'm feeling really sorry for the guy because this is his bread and butter. I'm not sure whether I feel sorry for the backups and the band as they know he has lost it, but are they supporting him or using him for a paycheck?

That's the sort of information you would expect to have been know before employing the bloke. You would expect someone with an ear for music that had seen him in a recent performance to be on the panel to make such a decision.

Ive seen the 'loaf live on tv various times over the years and he's never sounded any good. he might have been on key in the late 70's, but he's been shocking ever since. sadly he's sold enough records to surround himself with "yes men", no one would dare tell him the truth.

now can we get back to supporting local talent with some Aussie acts next year please??

Wasn't this andrew demetriou's choice? Obviously getting a washed up hack is cheaper and results in more of an end of season bonus for himself and his cronies. Amazing the afl has about triple the amount of money of the nrl and serves up rubbish like this most years.

Exactly.

Personally I don't have an issue with pre-match entertainment, I think it is a nice touch as long as it isn't overdone.

But for heaven's sake do a bit of research into any potential acts before you book them. Find the ones who can still hack it live.

Age doesn't have to be a barrier, there are still retro acts around who are still fine live (eg I saw America last year and they are still a great live act after 40 years).

(And, no, I am not suggesting America for GF entertainment, it was just an example to back up my point. :) )

It's not easy to find an act or act(s) who are going to make everyone happy, after all you are dealing with a diversity of ages and musical tastes in the viewing audience, but at the very least get ones who can do a decent live set. At least then the argument comes down to taste in music rather than quality of performance.

Case in point Lionel Richie - even if you didn't like his material, you couldn't say he didn't put on a fantastic show. Whereas with Loaf, the discussion has barely made it to whether people liked his material or not, given the standard of his performance.

w***ers going to watch a footy game but whingeing about a singer :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

If the AFL is going to pay a substantial amount of money for an act to appear, there is absolutely nothing wrong with people expecting a quality performance from that act.

And that's essentially what this discussion boils down to.

Alan Parsons Project anyone?

Gee, I really really agree with this point. It's actually a slap in the face to them, isn't it.

Definitely need to support Aussie talent next year :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Oxymoron, maybe?
No, just save the money, and put a couple of clips on the big screens.
Even better, just donate the 500K to the Childrens Hospital. No one would complain.

It would be nice to see a band that i have heard of and wasn't at their peak before i was born, although ACDC is an exception but thats never going to happen.
