Who's still hurting?

Yeah still hurts and probably will till the season kicks off next year, for a sec I actually felt sorry for the St Kilda supporters for missing out on a premiership from a unlucky bounce. Probably what annoys me the most is that the bloke who won the game for em (Hawkins) had to play his best game of his career against us and that next season his likely to go back to been a below par forward

This is worse than '02/'03.Back then we were an ordinary team.In some ways Malthouse was a better coach back then.To get so close in '02 to one of the best teams in the last 30 years is quite remarkable. It hurts because our list is the strongest i can remember it, to continue on from last year, for cloke, ball, pendlebury, davis, thomas and reid to all improve and have great years is so disappointing.

At the end of the day Scott out coached Malthouse.Scott assembled a team to win in finals, what really matters,he rested players, managed his list and made sure the team was peaking at the right time.Don't get me wrong we did well with the injuries and suspensions we had throughout the season but i reckon we peaked rd 20.I think we are a better team than Geelong but they were up and running, we were fighting and that was the difference in the end.

Absolutely still gutted.

Watched the replay back y'day + that made it worse with all the what-if's...

When we were 15points up late in the 2nd, they kicked 2 late goals:

1. After Stokes threw the ball out in a contest tunnel-ball style + ends up in Selwoods arms in the goals square.. missed by Ump

2. After Swans mark was not paid in the pocket, Jolly taps out, Bartel goals + 3points the diff with all the momentum.. Again if mark was paid its a diff game.

We lost by 38points in the end, inc. the Wellingham poster/goal being given so is any of this relevant at all..? who knows

if the 2 earlier ones aren't missed the whole day if different..

im just Devastated about the whole thing. esp. for Taz, Leon + Krak.

We lost to one of the greatest sides of all time so I'm not hurting. Our boys are young and we will be hungry next year. It was not our day. We had a great year and should be proud of the team! 2012.. New coach, new tweaks, new hunger. Can't wait!

I stopped hurting Sunday morning, I'm more just disappointed that we played well enough for three quarters and fell away in the last.

'02 was definitely worse. So close, yet so far. And 2003 was not a contest at all.

Thats pretty much how I feel, 2002 we got robbed, 2003 we were disgraced and on Saturday we weren't good enough for various reasons. Kinda weird but 2007 Prelim hurt a lot more than this year.
The feeling of hurt got quickly replaced by anger on Sunday, anger at a lot of things that shouldn't be mentioned ITT
Having this avatar and sig for another 27 days doesn't help....

It's more of an empty feeling I reckon. The season is over, it's so long when we made it so far and still end up with nothing.

Bring on 2012 already!

Not as bad as I expected, I think due to Geelong being seriously good and a likeable sort of club. Also winning last year helps. These things are bloody hard to win and if we missed our chance in this period i'd be spewing more. (Like St Kilda.) I'm not enjoying other clubs w***er supporters loving it so much. Most of them support crap sides who haven't won anything for ever and act like they won the norm smith themselves.

I was pretty young in 2002/03 when we lost those Grand Finals but I was at both games and was crushed after the nail biter in 2002.

This year is my first GF loss as an adult and boy it hurt. I've refused to watch any football related shows, watch the replay or read the sports section of the newspaper (and I love reading the sports stuff). I also have never been able to watch GF1 from 2010, I don't know why.

Is anyone else as effected by the loss as me or have we moved on pretty well since Saturday?
Can I ask you guys, would the "hurt" have been worse if you had lost in the PF?

Not trying to be smart but the Pies had some massive expectations from the fans for this year and think that you would have felt worse if that did happen. I think most Pies fans had no doubt in their minds about winning the GF all year.

Just curious to know as some of my Pie friends say they would have rather lost the PF. I know I would have rather the Hawks won the PF and lose the GF.

Look forward to Hawks vs Pies GF next year.

It does hurt not going back to back. Things that take the sting away from it are:

Bucks next year

A fired up angry Pies outfit ready for revenge

Eade

and that fact that we won last year

I don't care what people are saying. Fact is we have been a good side for over the years. I think injuries and Daisys and Shaws stupid mistakes hurt our finals chances. Always knew Shaws would hurt the most.

I had come to terms with it by the ten minute mark of the final quarter so it didn't hurt as much as it would have had a) we been pumped or b) led all day then lost on the last kick.

I was VERY flat on Sunday though.

I was starting to get over it today until a Cats supporter at work made a snide remark.

Felt like snapping back and sayng you didn't say jack after last years prelim.

But I bit my lip. Better off saying nothing so they have nothing to come back at you with.

My thoughts are changing a bit.
I guess i'm moving through the stages, bit like a grieving process.

Initially, and i still do think this to a fair extent, i thought Geelong were better and deserved to win.

But just over last 24 hours, am evolving to being to bit more towards pissed off about it.

I'm not 100% convinced MM's mind was totally as fluid as it needed to be ...'do it for Mick' is crap IMO, forget that shit, just play the game as it should be played, let the result take care of itself.

Didn't like the tears the week before, thought that showed that he was over invested emotionally and was wearing thin. If you're that invested, I believe it's hard to make cool headed rational decisions that are obviously required to be made.

A school child watching the game, would have moved Reid earlier.

All together this year, it was too much about MM and some of the shit he came out with ( I was pushed into signing; give Anzac Day game away to other clubs; veiled anti -Bucks stuff he came out with; our assistant coaches are great - we've already lost Neeld, take another one of them away in the finals lead-up. It was anti Collingwood, and it shat me to hear.

Now he renegs on the deal to stay...knows for six weeks and lies about it to the playing group, though Maxy knew which then puts separation between him and his team who didn't know, allowing the media circus to continue.

Bucks must be breathing a huge sigh of relief that he's going, having Rocket will be a totally different feeling, having someone respectful, eager and helpful even if he doesn't know the insides as much as MM.

I do give MM credit for at least realising how unworkable and difficult for the new coach that that would have been, had he stayed.
I also give him credit for the good relationships he had with the players.
The press won us last years flag, I think this years result reinforces that belief, we don't have the best playing list in the comp, and I give him credit for any role he had with the development of that concept.

But I stand by my criticisms, no one person is all bad or all good, but IMHO, he has shat in his nest badly over the past season.

Bucks must be commended for rising above all that and not firing back and if he brings this degree of character with him to his coaching, then he should do very well.

End rant/ criticise as you please, I'm going out, so won't be round to counter.

PS no criticism of the players because they all tried their guts out. Nor the umpires who did well and very few stuff ups at all ( poster and Swanny's non mark that directly led to Bartel goal cancel each other)

Hey, I even thought Meat loaf was OK!! He's 63 ffs.

Actually agree with everything you said Swoop, apart from Meatloaf.....:)

I wasn't really feeling much hurt this year for a few reasons:

- We played about as well as we could have under the circumstances
- Apart from a couple of things there wasn't much else we could have done
- Geelong played better
- The game wasn't close in the end
- I don't hate Geelong or their fans
- Geelong weren't overly arrogant about it or through the year

I would have been annoyed if we lost by a kick or two, or we played better than Geelong and then lost, but we didn't. I really don't see how we would have won that game with how it went and the lead up we had. The only thing that could have changed was putting Tarrant on Hawkins earlier and switching Reid to the forward line/subbing him off.

i half expected to lose, so not hurting as bad.

was gutted at the time though as I thought we'd win it at 3/4 time

the most dissapointing this is that I feel it was there for us this year moreso than any I can remember. Clearly the best side imo and it all went wrong at the worst time.

I don't reckon there was a side in the comp that would have got within 5 goals of us in about Round 15 when we were switched on

I was over it 10 minutes after the game to be honest. '02 was gut-renching, 03 was disgraceful but '11 was different all together. We were beaten by a great team, simple as that.

The fact we won last year has helped a lot, and the fact we have a young list means the future is as bright as ever.

We didn't have the luck on our side this season, and when you lose to the same team 3 times in a year you can't have any complaints...

I'm surprised how quickly I've gotten over it, but that has been helped by the grog and not reading any papers/watching any footy shows since Sat.

those parts highlighted some me up.

i was too young in 66 & 70.
i was sad in 77.
the 1st one to hurt was 79 - so close.
embarrassing in 80.
the 2nd one to hurt was 81 - had it won then froze.
exorcised all the evil spirits in 90.
never thought us good enough in 02 or 03, so rather nonchalant in those years.
2010 was a celebration of forming a young list capable of creating a dynasty. a bonus.
in 2009 i had assessed our team a good thing for the 2011 flag, and so to lose this one is more disappointing than hurting.

have become immune in many ways. the crap from others is truly water off a ducks back.

just looking forward to next year, and every year after that.

Still really hurting to be honest.

I'm still tearing up when I think about Dale and Dawes crying after the match. Still struggling to talk about the actual game and have to change the subject quickly.

Love hearing the stories about the boys post match drinking though!

Saw a few of the Collingwood boys at Tramp on Saturday night. Dawesy was still visibly upset and didn't move from the couch for a long time. The man was devastated :(

This is my seventh losing grand final and it hurts as much as 1977.

I only go back as far as 1980. One could argue we were the best team all year and it was a missed opportunity to go back to back. For that reason only, it hurst more.

Along with Collingwood saving it's worst last quarter for the year until the GF. In fact it's worst quarter period.

2002 was a great effort. 2003 apparently we were favourites? There is something about Collingwood and Grand Finals that doesn't = Guarantee

Even last year when we were favourites, the best team etc, we were lucky in the end to hold off a rampaging St.Kilda. The result of the 2nd GF should have really been the 1st.
