ESSENDON will put its players through the toughest pre-season of their careers, believing its emerging squad can be pushed even more this summer.

Players are already tweeting about how hard Robinson's working them.

For once, I'm believing the pre-season hype.
Can you go down to the club disguised as a recruit Whomb, and let us all know how hard the traning sessions are in person.

But, yeah it sounds like we're getting on top of our fitness program anyway.

I couldn't believe the difference in how many miles Freo were doing last season, compared to us. It came back to bite them, but it shows how much work we've still got ahead of us. If anyone hasn't seen the article, we were doing 25-30kms a week. Freo were doing up to 60km.

Meh the fluff has come early this year.

Proof will be in the injury toll and fitness next year.

Not holding my breath.

25km a week is bloody nothing. Thats 2 x6km on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 13km on the weekend - which is what an average Joe like me does to keep fit (when I can be arsed).

At 40+ (yes I;m an old fart) I manage 21 a week. 25 is sfa for an "elite" athlete.

To be fair, they're also doing lots of weights - although they'll be doing a lot more kms this pre-season. 60 is insane.

Good post.

Sick of hearing about the February champions/training the house down etc etc etc.

the proof will oviously be in the pudding.

But, this season there has been more change than just head of high performance changing, let me tell you. A lot of behind the scenes personel changes have apparently happened.

Not just a harder, bigger, strong etc pre-season, but a vastly different philosophy on how we do it, as much as how hard we do it.

May take more than 1 pre-season to see results though.

At least Robinson / Thompson have some runs on the board in this regard. Nobody has questioned the size and strength of Geelong's players for a long time.

But yeah, I'd rather come back in a couple of months and see the evidence rather than hearing it.

I've been watching the 2011 games (wins only!) again on BigPondTV. It's amazing how much more energy the team had early on, but there were signs early, even in Round 3 vs the Saints, that the supply of petrol tickets was limited.

Given that the energy levels for 2011 were a significant step up from 2010, you'd hope we're building toward the sort of fitness base that the Barcodes and the Cats demonstrated through 2011.

Glad to hear that some of it is working smarter rather than just harder.

I can tell you first hand that last year was the hardest i had ever seen them train across the board. There was no fluff about it, even the skills where done under maximum pressure with a 3k run in the middle and no rest so they where working under fatigue conditions.

Brent Prismall said it was the toughest preseason he had done, he has been at Essendon and geelong in thier prime.

I think what they covered in terms of mileage, was done under extreme intensity too.

I thought this was another hot chick thread with the title though.

So extremely disappointed to leave thinking of whomb working out.....
