Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 78 - Orren Stephenson

Who is this man? Where has he come from? Another mature age recruit, at the ripe old age of 29! Seems he is a ruckman brought in as a senior type to replace Ottens while the young guys develop. If it's as successful as the JPod, we'll all be very happy indeed! In Wells we trust.

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 78 - Orren Stephenson

Orren Stephenson has been dominating at VFL level for quite a while. I'm impressed they've been able to get him considering the fact he has rejected other clubs previous offers to nominate for the draft. 29 years old with three kids too!! Hopefully can do the job for 2 years.

Amazing selection, with other options available and the McCarthy one, no Bosley?
Very interesting.

Orren has dominated VFL for years and finally gets a go at the big level. Hopefully he does well :thumbsu:

It begs the question - who wouldn't want to play with Geelong :)

I didn't realise he was that BIG - that's big by AFL standard, not just VFL!

Hopefully another astute selection by the Cats.

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 78 - Orren Stephenson

I believe he previously was offered Rookie spots by other clubs but knocked them back on a dollars decision , but Geelong obviously is a ideal match. He has probably a very , very good chance of playing immediately and is on the main list not Rookie. If his body is good he should be able to carry us over till our young guys are ready.

Surprise but clever choice

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 78 - Orren Stephenson

Good pick-up Cats.

He is in the opinion of a lot of VFL supporters, the BEST ruckman in the comp.

RARELY gets beaten.

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 78 - Orren Stephenson

Perfect pickup for us; couldn't be happier. Last I heard, he wasn't interested in a final crack at the AFL, glad he changed his mind. A development ruckman would have been nice as well (still got the rookie draft for that), but with West, Simpson and Stephenson to go along with Vardy, we're good to go in the ruck for the next 2-3 years.

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 78 - Orren Stephenson

any thoughts as to why we didn't wait till the rookie draft?

Due to the fact that other clubs have offered him rookie spots before but he has knocked them back due to lifestyle (he has three kids) and a rookie wage wouldn't put enough food on the plate

one of the most bizarre selections i can remember. perhaps the club thinks we can't win the premiership without a big bodied ruckman?

or perhaps he's just list fodder - someone we can delist at the end of next year to get an extra pick in a bumper draft

Think he more to protect West and Vardy from the monster Ruckmen i.e. Sandilands, Cox etc

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 78 - Orren Stephenson

I'd say the reasoning is identical to why we took Pods in 2009 - we delisted several talls (Simpson, McKenna) and needed another option in case Mooney or Hawkins had to be replaced. Given we just saw the back of Blake and Ottens, it stands to reason that an alternative to Dawson or West be at hand, who does not need several preseasons to bulk up or learn the game. I don't think Vardy in the ruck is going to happen in 2012, so to get one of the best ruckmen outside of the AFL is something of a coup, and eerily familiar.

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 78 - Orren Stephenson

It's a fantastic selection. We don't have enough rucks and the ones we do have are in their infancy, and two of them are undersized. Stephenson ticks all those boxes - he's huge, mature, and simply by being on the list greatly increases our depth.

Really good pic I think.. Allows Simpson time to develop more.

From what I remember seeing in the vfl he moves really well for a big bloke, good foot skills as well.. As has been mentioned has been the top ruckman in the vfl for years

That picture is not to scale though; when you stand next to him, he's a lot bigger than that.

Geelong had a (desperate) need for a ruckman who would be ready to go in 2012. We've currently go West, Simpson and possibly Vardy as ruckmen, and Vardy still has a lot of filling out to do. That's it. They were our ruckmen heading into the draft. What happens if Vardy's injury causes him more problems and then Simpson goes down - Lonergan into the ruck? Or some eighteen year old kid we've drafted with pick 78, who is 205cm and 72kg and is getting monstered by VFL ruckmen?

More than a long-term answer as a ruckman, our desperate need was for someone who can come in next season, maybe play 5-15 games (depending on injuries) and hold his own. Then do the same the next season. And maybe the season after that. That's all we need. It still may be worth taking a punt on a beanpole from the TAC Cup, or an ex-basketballer who's played ten games of football in his life, as a rookie, but with Stephenson, our ruck stocks look fine for the next two years.

He fills a huge need for us and I am delighted we got him.

Re: 2011 National Draft selection No. 78 - Orren Stephenson

Getting Stephenson would also suggest that, barring some left-field rookie selection, Geelong are still satisfied that Dawson is the long-term plan for first ruck.
