I have done beep test at school in p.e. and haven't really prepared or cared very much about them. Then after brad hills performance this year at the draft combine I have been thinking about what scores us lesser athletes have been getting.

By the way I regularly get about 12.1-5

So post your score below...

Can't recall exactly what i got in the beep as many years ago now but think was mid 13's, it's not that hard until it gets up to that sort of level then it gets bloody impossible, a long way from the 12/13's to the elite high 14/15's.

I've always wanted to try this test. Does anyone know if short/medium distance running (ie. 5k) translates to the beep test well?

If i can run 5k in about 21.5 minutes.

And using this chart:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-stage_fitness_test

Level 21 is 4.9km in 22 mins, does that mean i'd score high ish?

although this is a pretty good time over 5kms it doesnt really translate into a certain beep test score if you understand what i am trying to say. although they dont sound too different, running back and forward (stopping and starting), i find, is a lot different to running in one direction for a certain distance.

what i am getting at is that you cant substitute a 5km time to get a beep test score though judging from your time you wouldnt do too bad. you should try one out though. they give you a good insight into where you really are fitness wise. i have a free app on my iphone that has the beep test on it. you cant do much wrong in doing it.

your logic is a little off with that
with the beep test, you are not doing a steady state run like you were doing with your 5km run. look at the wiki link a bit closer and you'll see that you gradually increase speed after every minute (increase a level with each speed step up). also the stop start nature every 20m also is something a lot different to a steady state run.

my best was 11.2 in high school. had people get in the 14s and 15s while i was watching

Yeh, i understand it doesn't translate directly, but i was hoping someone that had done both could provide an approximate translation.

ie.. people who run this, usually score within x range.

Wasn't expecting to get 21+ or anything, but would love if it was in the mid teens somewhere.

It's not hard to do, download the tape, get yourself a tape measure and something to use as markers and head down to the park.

The guy was just asking..

Cfol in the beep test you might get through 7 or 8 levels and your heart rate only reach 70% so you are relative cruising. But then by level 11 it might be up to 95% and you can't keep that up for long.
Whereas in a 5km run you can sorta settle nicely at 85% and maintain that.
Fitness is fitness and it will generally correspond anyway.
But for me at my clubs preseason I've been taking out all the 1km, 3km etc time trials with ease (well not easy but winning by a comfortable margin). We done a beep test today and I finished 4th (although I must say some of the blokes were stopping short of the cone for a fair few beeps).

the beep test is a test for VO2 Max
basically once it takes you past OBLA (onset of blood lactate accumulation) you wont last a hell of a lot longer. this ranges greatly between people. aerobically you could be amazing and run excellent long distance times, but you could be in trouble if someone kicks during a race and destroys you by taking you over your anaerobic thresh-hold.

so to answer, it might give you a certain range, but it wont be definitive. also the beep test has a big psychological component to it since you know you have to beat the next beep otherwise you are out. lots of people would get lower scores than what they could because of this aspect alone

All my runs i usually finish with a sprint. With about 500m to go i'll speed it up to a fast run, with the last 30 seconds being a full on sprint.

Also when i was bulking i was doing a 10 min tready session which usually involved:
4 mins @ 12k/h

And then repeats (3 or 4) of:
40 seconds @ 19.2k/h
60 seconds @ 10k/h

So as far as sprints are concerned i'm not too bad with them. But the aerobic threshold thing does make sense. Never really seen myself as a distance runner though, usually when i hit the 5k mark i'm absolutely stuffed - dont think i could ever do a 10k. My other runs are usually in the 2-3k range.

I guess like you said, only way to know is to try it, so now i'm off work i'll definitely need to give it a go.

Haven't done any cardio recently due to illness so will be interesting to see how i react to it.

Cfol, I run a similar 5km time. Well... I did when I was running a few times a week. Translated to around 11 in the beep test for me.

But yeah, this is so much different, it shouldn't really be used as a guide. Prankmonkey's post was a good one, explains it nicely.

I'm actually keen to see how I go, eventually. Might give it a crack. In school I never really had a reason to go too far past 10 as that's when the regular athletes started pulling out and once I saw the freaks left, I started to decide when I was done. Very mental! One of my old teachers got 16.8 when he was a student at the school, record still stands today. Very impressive.

David Beckham is rumoured to have finished the test but it's total bullshit. No one can. Olympic athletes hit around 19.

Damn, looks like i'll most likely get a lot lower than i hope.

I guess it's always good to have a goal :)

Got 14.11 one year. Would be absolute miles off that now though.

Would like to know what a 10km specialist runner would do

Last time I did one I got 13.0 at the start of pre season, was about 18 y.o, a mate got 14.0, and the best was 15.0. 4 years later and I'd struggle to get 8 now I reckon

Is there proof? There's no way I'll believe anyone has finished it (or gotten above 20) without hard evidence.

I honestly don't know but I remember my p.e teacher telling the class about how only 3 people had finished it. I don't know where he got that from but I doubt he would lie to us about a thing like that, but if anyone can find a link that's show us some proof of a person finishing that'd be good!

My best is 10.2 but having said that I have never done it since my sinus surgery or my impending jaw surgery that influence breathing. The VO2 max test is different according to my trainer who said people can have an elite VO2 but can fail quite badly at the beep test.

The splits in the last levels are under 4secs, no chance anyone is finishing that!

i would think quite a few male elite marathon runners would finish the beep test. they run sub 2hr 10min marathons, so that is around 20km/h. add in their ability to kick, and it would be a given some of them would finish it
