I think people are harsh on the women's game. I look at it this way when I go and watch mates play local footy I don't expect AFL standard therefore when I watch women's tennis I appreciate it for what it is.

federer vs nadal , it isn't

theres no 'rivalry' in women's tennis. and the only thing that gives me pleasure from watchong, from the playing perspective- is seeing the annoying player (ie someone who grunts or plays gamesmanship) get knocked out

furthermore, the price of a ticket to centre court on womens finals day is overpriced and sometimes matches are over in less than an hour. you might as well have paid to see the mens doubles final!

A fool and their money are soon parted. Why anyone would voluntarily go to the Women's Final is beyond me. That's why the Americans have Super Saturday, because a Women's Final, even with a Men's Doubles Final, isn't much of a show.

Isn't it really only grand slams where women get equal prize money? At a lot of other tournies I don't think they do...
Someone will know. They might get equal prizemoney at all combined events such as Indian Wells, Beijing, etc

They do at Indian Wells: http://www.wtatennis.com/news/20111221/indian-wells-to-boast-million-dollar-prize_2256076_2555133

I heard Craig Gabriel on 927 Sport this morning (Melbourne) and he kept saying "gender equality". I would have liked to put to him one question "Why can't the women play a best-of-5 final, not best-of-5 sets every match, just the Grand Slam finals? Is that too much to ask?" He'd probably respond that they don't train to play 5 sets so a one-off would be too difficult for them.

The top players train enough to play best of five sets but do we really want them to play best of five sets. It would advantage the top players

The men only play best of five at the Grand Slams and I agree with your point about the U.S Open and how it has super Saturday, a great day of sport.

Look equal pay at slams is a political reality and nothing to do with the merit of the top men as against the top women. Obviously the top men are infinitely better oncourt and are far bigger marketing vehicles off court and WTA can only attrace big purses when piggybacking ATP.

The womens event is parasitic on the mens and would be a minor attraction as a stand alone. In that case 5 sets for women would be a total disaster as irrelevent games with no one interested lasted ages keeping the men off court and driving away interest and money.

5 sets for women is a non starter....mercifully.

I agree with this. Of course men's tennis is a better standard, men are stronger than women, that's just the way it is. I don't think you'll find anyone who argues otherwise, but the way some people carry on about it is a bit ridiculous. If you don't like it don't watch it.

And can you really blame them for trying to get more money? Wouldn't you people if you saw the chance to get more money at your job do the exact same thing? Yeah, I guess you can definitely make a good argument for then they should play 5 sets, but its not as though they don't put in as much work off the court as the men do.

And I personally would never buy tickets to the women's final, unless an Aussie was in it, and I was very well off.

Women's matches frequently have one player dominating a set, then going off the boil and getting owned in the next. 90% of matches involving players outside of the 3 or 4 who know how to grind out the big matches are a joke.

Frankly with a Fedal to look forward to and perhaps a Djokovic V Murray as well who cares how meny sets the girls play with no one watching.

Political Correctness means they can piggyback the ATP and get millions for playing on an undercard but that does not mean we have to waste time commenting on it or watching it. Good luck to the girld. Linking up with the ATP gives them a profile and money they can't raise on their own but for me I would prefer they play one set games and get off the court so the tennis can start.

I know this sounds sexist but I feel the same about Boys events. sideshows just don't interest me.

Should at least be best of 5 for the final. That tonight was a joke. Although I'm not sure another set would have really helped much. Just another 20 odd minutes of uncompetitive slaughter.

To be honest I think this issue is made out to be bigger than it really is. More often than not, the tournaments are not joint, its really only the GS plus a few others here and there. Not that I necessarily disagree with the notion of playing less sets means they should get the same amount, but some of you are just way too quick to dismiss everything. The women still have to pay coaches, airfares, hotel fees and I'm sure work just as hard off the court as the men do. The match might determine everything, but its really only the tip of the iceberg.

I don't get some of the arguments either, one minute its "oohh they should play 5 sets", then its "but women's tennis is shit, it shouldn't be 5 sets". Well then, you can't win. Maybe they should play 5 sets, it would be interesting to see which players could maintain the standard.

Mens tennis is in an era unlike any other.
3 players who are elite A graders and world class and women's tennis is wishy washy with anyone being able to win a slam depending on who is up at the time.

That's why the 5 set argument comes up.

Good lookers in womens tennis but not many personalities or players I can follow like Steffi Graf or Chris Evert.

The grunting drives me nuts also.

Mens tennis is at a special unprecedented stage with the 3 superstars at the top.

Having said that,I miss the days of McEnroe and Borg, the days of volleying and lobs and more artistic stroke play.

Most players these days play from the baseline with the odd drop shot.

Name me one sport where women get paid the same as men. Name me one sport where women deserve to get paid the same as men. The simple fact is that if we had a two week Australian Men's Tennis Open, and a two week Australian Women's Tennis Open, the men would attract more advertising, greater attendances, more revenue, and higher tv ratings. Not only that, but the cost of entry for the Men's event would be higher, as it currently is for the Men's final:

Saturday: Junior Girls' Singles Final, Junior Boys' Singles Final, Women's Singles Final, Men's Double Final
Sunday: Men's Singles Final, Mixed Doubles Finals

Four matches on the Saturday, two on the Sunday, yet a ticket for Sunday is 27% dearer. If equal pay is here to stay, then someone should petition Tennis Australia to drop the price of a Men's Finals ticket to the same as a Women's Final.

Women playing 5-set tennis will not change anything, it would be a nice token gesture. It would be great if a couple of the top girls came out and said "We are tennis professionals, we are the best of our chosen sport, and we feel that we should play a best-of-5 final at the grand slams." That would probably generate some respect.

Women's tennis is a fraud, that is undeniable. You say "The women still have to pay coaches, airfares, hotel fees and I'm sure work just as hard off the court as the men do". Does that not also apply in Women's golf, the WNBA and other professional female sport? Yet they don't get paid the same as men do they? Because what they are supplying is not in the same demand as what the men have to offer.

This has nothing to do with equality in the workforce. Of course women should get equal pay for equal work in your typical 9-to-5 job. But when it comes to sport, the average fan is male and they greatly prefer men's sport. If women want better pay, then the average female should take a greater interest in sport. Ask 10 men you know if they like sport, and which sports, and do the same for 10 women. Good chance that most of the women have little to no interest in women's sport.

I've thought a little bit about male and female sport across the board. Is there any sport in the world where females get paid the same as the men? I struggle to come up with one. There are some sports for females that are reasonably high paid, though how many female athletes actually have an annual income over $1 million would be a tiny % of how many males are paid over that figure.

So I come to the point that in a grand slam, go ahead and pay females the same. I think it is something that tennis can actually promote, by saying that they regard female tennis highly and think they deserve the same amount of money.

Male sport is better than female sport because men can run faster, jump higher and make more explosive movements. This leads to a better spectacle. Male and Female bodies are composed differently, not at the fault of the female.

If you run 2 grand slams side-by-side at the same time no doubt the male will bring in bigger revenue, higher attendances, tv audiences and interest. But that is not how grand slams operate, it is a combined event which when you put all aspects of it together, makes it great. At the grand slam pay men and women equally.

But also have the semis and final of the womens best of 5 sets.
