Inside the context of coaching accountability, you would be struggling to name one who hadn't at some stage been able to have his team psychologically cherry ripe for games. Ratts is still learning as a coach, we know it all already as supporters.

Interestingly, I watched Moneyball again on the flight and train home from the trip that has become known as the debacle. For those that have not seen it, recommend you do, brilliant sports drama (very accurately) based on a true story. I know because I looked up all of the names in the film to see what became of them. I wont spoil the plot, but a surprising fact from major league baseball is that the regular season is 162 games long (baseball is hardly a physically taxing sport except on pitchers perhaps) and yet the longest winning streak in 150 odd years history is 22 games. So no matter how well your team is playing, or how stacked with stars (as the Yankees often are) 22 is the most winning games they can string together in a row.

Nice perspective.

Good point - but the benchmarks are / were Geelong/ Collinwood for us no?

No. The benchmark is top 4. Collingwood may not even make the 8. We may understand a little more about them in 3 days. So far they have only beat Port (by not much) and Richmond (by not much).

And the Cats barely got over the Tigers at home on flag unfurl day. Hardly awe inspiring. They did however beat the Hawks, which we rate as a big chance. But it could have been a last gasp kick from a dying giant. Who knows.

The top 4 may only have 2 of last years participants this year and neither of the cats or pies could be a distinct possibility.

I am just watching a replay of the second half now and I think when you take the emotion out of it, we weren't really playing that terribly. Two things that let us down majorly:

- Centre clearances: went from amazing last week to terrible against the bombers. They had first touch of the footy nearly every time and a majority of those times they registered a score.

- Entries i50: they were sloppy just about every time. Rarely had a clean disposal going inside the forward 50, especially one to a forward leading in to open space.

- Forward set up: went to Betts far too much. The last 3 weeks it has always seemed like one of Waite/ Hampson has been in the goal square as a permanent option but on Saturday there never seemed to be a tall option deep at home.

- Kicking at goal: pretty self explanitory. Was pretty woeful.

- They registered scores from their kick-ins with far too much ease. Our defensive zone just wasn't up to scratch on Saturday.

When you put all of these issues together you are never going to win (or, at least, you're going to find it extremely difficult). But I actually think we'll be better for it in the end. I get sick of saying that at times, but I think there's many a lesson to learn from Saturday's game, which will help us going forward this year.

it wasnt so much the dropping of a game that was annoying it was the fact that essendon did it to us that annoyed me.

they wanted it more and when showed up it was too late a comeback was never on the cards when got those injuries.
However i am confident that we will come back from this, essendon are just a dark horse for us and we are for them just like geelong hawthorn the result is never set in stone with our 2 teams.

it was a pretty average week of footy and i hope our players can get over their injuries so we can pick up our next win.
If you use collingwood and geelong as our benchmarks you could argue every premiership team looses a game they wherent meant to. We did in '95 essendon lost to the dogs in 2000 and geelong lost to north at home in '07.
Its not the end of the world but it doesnt remind us we are not invincible.
bring on freeo so we can be 4-1.

Nothing like Hawthorn v Geelong.

Their only win from the last five games against Carlton.

Meh.

Won't be long before the red sash turns to yellow again and they start jeering Brent "A grader" Stanton again.

Not how it was asked guys and it has been taken out of context.

Murph was asked yesterday on CH7's Game day about the tackle on Carrazzo and he said " I'm looking forward to playing Essendon next time".

He was also asked about the $900 fine and his reply was "best $900 I have ever spent".

I know he said it on Game Day, I recorded it.

They almost literally had the whole game to do something about it and they didn't.

They're starting to make me feel that they're all about talk. Just shut up with stupid comments like that and making expectations public and get on with it on the field, enough mucking around. You can talk all you want when you're not playing but when you're out there, your level of performance and your intent speaks more about your team than any words can say.

He should've just given the simple "Yeah that's part of footy, injuries can happen, but we'll move on".

Ratten came out and said stuff like "We've matured as a group and we can handle the expectations now" and "We're not going to get fat heads" and what happened? They come out to the MCG in a big and important game against our biggest rivals (along with the Pies) and they look flat, lack intensity and get bullied by a bunch of idiots that think they're better than they actually are.

Those are clear signs of them not only not handling expectations but also getting fat heads thinking they were just going to turn up and it was all going to happen.

The worst part about it is, it happened against Essendon and not for the first time too.

James Hird on the radion earlier today answering questions on his tactics on Saturday "well we thought if we could deny their mids the ball we;re a long way to winning' (in short)

Boy why didn;t he think of THAT in the EF

Bloody genius

Essendon defender Sam Lonergan is in the clear for a tackle, despite Carlton midfielder Andrew Carrazzo being sidelined for up to two months with a fractured shoulder blade.

So it seems that you can tackle as hard as you like driving a guy into the ground from the back - and cop a free kick as your only punishment.

pfffffffffft

cant bump ( all players now duck their heads into tackles )
can't tackle hard in front especially shorter players - all players duck their heads into tackles

but can hit as hard as you like from behind spearing players into the ground and sitting on their heads as long as you don't jump on them twice..

really good rules.

There was no way on Earth the AFL were going to condemn that injury-motivated tackle. Zero Chance. It would open them up legally. However, I wouldn't be surprised if the AFL made an off-the-record phone call to the EFC expressing their dislike for those tactics. They were also trying to do the same to Marc Murphy in the first 1/4. If one of these hacks takes out another player it's going to be hard for the AFL to sweep this issue under the carpet. Mick Malthouse's comments at the time summed it up really. Everyone knew the intent was to injure the player rather than gain possession of the ball. Lets just hope this rubbish doesn't happened again. Terrible for the game.

:)

So under your line of thinking wouldn't suspending Lindsay Thomas open up the AFL for legal action from Gary Rohan ?

No rules needed - just an observation. Those that know are more inclined to agree with Parrots view - cant say much in a world full of political correctness. Even Malthouse thought the tackle was "rank".

But sure lets penalise acccidental bumps when players are coached to duck their heads and get automatic frees...

BS IMHO

Between the tripping rule and the head-high contact rule, soon you will be unable to contact a player anywhere on his body without there being some sort of controversy or doubt in interpretation. So many rules simply have to start crossing over from one part of the body to another.

Free kicks and 50 metre penalties are nowdays given for brushing someone's arm - 100 metres if it's Reiwoldt. There are rules against sliding in, third man in, slinging, spearing, excessive force, unintentional/intentional whatever, tripping, charging, tunneling, wrestling, the list goes on.

Sure the AFL fears a player becoming badly hurt but not as much as it fears litigation from said player. It's the old passive smoking rule. We couldn't give a stuff about your comfort, we're really terrified of being sued.

So rules, rules, rules. Now let's have another one for exactly how much force is used in tackling a bloke into the ground. When we're done with that we'll need to look at "intentional staring" and "indiscriminate use of non-AFL approved hair product". FMD.

The players unofficial moto used to be HTFU. Think we need to readopt this principal. It's football - people sometimes get hurt. Sure it was a rank tackle but it was no worse than the one that drove Gibbs into the ground in the EF and because we won we didn't sook about it.

If Carlton is going to be a successful side we need to suck it up and not look for excuses.

What I want to see is instead of seething internally, is the boys go twice as hard in the rematch. I liked Murph's response on game day. Will be interesting to see how plays out next time round.

I've never stooped that low in more than 40 years of following Carlton (there have been plenty of opportunities to do so during that time). It says a lot about the mentality of those footy supporters who can't wait to rub it in. Perhaps they are making up for their own inadequacies.

this is what footballs all about, from day 1 as a kid. your team wins & you get bragging rights til next time. if more people could go to the footy, sit next to an oppositions supporter & have a fun day rubbing it into each other & at the end be able to say either bad luck on the loss or good luck for your win & shake hands & say see ya next time perhaps we wont one day end up like english soccer with fans locked away from each.
I took over the local convenience store where the local team is the "bombers" - i stick up the blues poster & have a good, healthy banter with alot of customers. they enjoy giving it & i take it happily when we lose to the bombers, pies, saints & the customers love to give it to me, as they should. I happily wore a blues jumper to work when we won the final last year & my customers i feel appreciate coming in knowing they can either give it to me as hard as they can or are going to get me grinning like a cheshire cat at them.
Enjoy the ride, its a game & you can only win, lose or maybe draw. if you cant enjoy it by annoying a friend whats the point.

I agree, I have more of a problem with someone not coming in and ragdolling that little sh$t.
They were harder and wanted it more.....simple really.
The last person to complain would be Carrazzo himself.
Hope he's right to return the favour later this year.

This is one reason why we lost...
