Probalbly the most versatile player we have...can do a shut down role on the likes of Goddard and Goodes and can play the back half with aplomb and go forward and kick goals...he doesn't strike me as an in and under type...he tackles well and rarely gets beaten in a contest....is a beautifuly skilled and brings other players into the game...I think the SF last year against the Eagles would have been a different result if he had been there....keep doing what you are doing Gibber I'm not sure what else you can bring to your game....

his ability to win nearly all 1 on 1 contested is greatest skill.

take one from the weekend. playing back, high ball to the GWS's players advantage (think it was hampton?), applies pressure, balls spills out, collects and gets the handball out to a team mate in space with minimal of fuss.

some might say he doesn't attack the contest hard enough but in that situation I would rather a cool and calm gibbs over a bustling robbo.

I remember that and numerous others and just compare that to what would of happened if Bower or Thornton or even Russell were in the same position.

Bower was ordinary in a couple of 1 on 1 contests early on the weekend and was quickly banished from defense to be a reasonable contributor after that point playing a different role!

Here's the thing with Gibbs, when he has the ball, I feel very safe, he is normally a very good decision maker especially under pressure, he stays calm and is able to think quick.

Agree with this and don't underestimate how important this is.

OK Gibbs might not play like a wrecking ball but the trend in modern football is to have a team of contested ball winners.

We have that. What we lacked was the skills and polish, particularly coming out of the backline.

With Gibbs and Yarran we now have that.

Stating the bleeding obvious I know, but it is vital in September.

Gibbs - good player, good decision maker, well skilled however looks lazy, looks soft, lacks urgency and is overrated IMHO.

Scotland, Simpson play a similar role but are better players at the minute. In years to come he might take the next step. Worthy as number 1 pick? not really and that's not his fault and I got no problems with him being taken at number 1.

Agreed. And whilst we can say if or buts about anything, I am absolutely sure if we had Gibbs in the final we would have beaten the West Coast Ducks.

My biggest concern is that he's seemed to have stagnated. A very good footballer as it is and arguably in our top 5 players but he was at that level 3 years ago. What genuine improvement have we seen?

If anything, his inside game seems to have dropped off. He now has a knack of throwing the ball onto his boot ala Robinson when in the midfield, instead of trying to spot up a target. A trait that I don't remember him having in his first few years at the club.

he'd have to be close to an AA HBF this year imo. Enright's started slow, Goddard isn't himself, and he's certainly playing better than Bob Murphy.

Who right now, is ahead of him?

Can we draw comparisons RE goddard to gibbs?....from memory everyone ripped into goddard because he played the utility role and not the midfield role......however if you watch him play and what he does for his team it is pretty clear how important he is. The same can be said about Gibbs.

Bryce is still relatively young..give him a chance.......if he was a little harder at the ball nobody would say anything about him.

On of bryces qualities is that he plays the percentages, im not sure i can remember a situation where gibbs not going hard has costed us a goal as he has tackled them anyway.

It is great for the team he is such a versatile player, who always does a job down back or up forward

As a midfielder though I have concerns as I don't think he is naturally aggressive/hard enough to play on-ball

Missed his opportunity against GWS when given a chance to show he can play on-ball, ended up down back again where he steadied us and looked the part

Maybe we have to accept he is not going to be a mid, but rather an excpetional swingman

Hodge and Goddard play similar roles really.

Ratts really pumped him up in the preseason...I reckon we are still waiting to see him take the next step and become an AA.

When we first had all 3 number 1s I thought Bryce would be the best followed by Kreuzer then Murphy. Since then I've flipped Murphy and Gibbs.

He's good but not an absolute gun yet. Still the only player I'd consider trading him for in his draft is Selwood. You'd take the second best player in the draft with the number 1 pick every day of the week, just ask Melbourne.

I've seen Gibbs take plenty of contested marks in defence, camped under a high ball, or cutting in front of a pack. Has the guts despite people calling him soft, just prefers to wait on the play more than a Hodge or Goddard. Somehting I'm not entirely sure we should be discouraging.

And a big one at that.

Just because Gibbs doesn't play a hard game doesn't mean he's soft.
Gibbs is not our enforcer. He is our play-maker. I wish people could see that.

Didn't call him soft, but he is no Hodge and shouldn't be compared with him.

Deflection.

You stated that Gibbs wouldn't sit under a high ball or back into a pack to mark.

Forest, meet trees.

Love that it's Grigg who kicked it to Gibbs. :p

Am I right in saying he was close to signing a new contract a few weeks ago? Unless I missed this and he has, it seems to have gone a little quiet.
