I know the phrase "Most Valuable" is somewhat vague, but I'll define it as "hardest to replace".

Against Sydney and Adelaide our midfield was destroyed. Comparisons with 2010 were valid IMO, because we saw a return to players being bumped off the ball and circular handball work.

Right from the first bounce against Brissie, Shuey broke the lines and set the opposition on the back foot. I'm not suggesting we'd have won the previous two weeks, if Shuey had played, but I think we'd have at least given the opposition some defending to do.

I believe Luke Shuey is our most valuable midfielder. Do you?

the past 3 weeks have shown us that the answer to this question is FCUK YES!

he has overtaken kerr's mantle of our most important mid, without question.

his speed, skill, poise & toughness is HUGELY importly to us. he's now our rolls royce, like matera, cousins, kerr & judd were before him.

still severely underrated outside of the club, but that's quite okay by me.

I would say he turns our hard working blue collar midfield into a dynamic one, well him and Kerr (when fit).

There are a handful of players on this team that are agile and can break through congestion and IMO they are;
NN
Shuey
Kerr
Schofield
Hill

Without these guys (or played in wrong position and/or down on form) we look really 1 paced and never threatening. These guys turn a 50/50 into a danger ball for the opposition in a flash.

At the moment, our midfield needs every single member available for it to work. I reckon if you took Priddis or Scooter or Gaff out, you'd see that whatever they bring us is missing in spades.

We don't have really versatile midfielders, we have a couple who are really got at winning the hard ball and a couple that are really good at receiving, running and disposing of it. If you look at, say, Pendlebury and Swan, they're both just as excellent inside as out, and so while their absence would be somewhat detrimental, it wouldn't leave the sort of hole a midfield absence would for us.

Good points.

Kerr can be but not consistently.

Kerr can be effectively tagged though, so that might explain why he is tagged so often.
You could argue that after quarter time Shuey had little impact yesterday. Not sure he's got that consistency yet.

Kerr for mine just, but Shuey will overtake in the next 12 months.

That is true to a degree, but he rarely has a sub 10-15 disposal game. Kerr can completely vanish for not just a quarter but a small stretch of matches.

Partly I imagine it is his body, but a large part is how effectively he can be tagged by certain players.

As hard as it is to say, Shuey is probably more damaging than Kerr. Just as good at getting space from stoppages, he is probably a lot faster. Runs and carries more, far better disposal by foot and kicks more goals.

He was the most damaging player in terms of scoring shots from stoppages last year and CD rates him as one of the best kicks in the game.

He is also who Collingwood, whom rarely targets players, tagged heavily in last years final.

That just about sums it up.

Yes Shuey is more damaging. He is more explosive away from stoppages than kerr is.He breaks lines and is a 70-80 metre player(carries it 20-30 metres and kicks it 50).He is better than kerr hitting targets by foot, and he is more of a goalkicker than kerr.

So based on that, yes he is a more valuable mid than kerr.(not saying kerr isnt still valuable though)

I voted no, simply because right now Daniel Kerr is the guy I really back to stand up in the big games/finals. Shuey will be in a few years though, I have very little doubt. Just needs more September and big game experience.

My vote is Priddis too. Kerr also before Shuey.

I was convinced it was going to be Scott Selwood after the first few months of the season. Not sure what happened there.

Disagree. He quieted down a little, but every touch was golden and his line breaks are team lifting. Was also doing a lot of good work off the ball around stoppages, blocks and so forth, but this wouldn't have been noticeable on TV.
