My one is out of left field and I doubt anyone other then Corws and Lions fans will remember this but it was round 9 2001 at the gabba.

It was a really great standard game and ebbed and flowed all night. Crows narrowly got over the line with a goal that was very close to being touched on the line but prob was just a goal. marcus picken had a shot form about 60 out after the siren to win it for the lions but didn't make the distance. After that game the lions did not lose anotheer game for the 2001. Even though we lost it was a pleasure to have travelled up to the Gabba for such a great game.

As mentioned earlier it won't be remembered by many other fans and it wasn't even shown in Melbourne because on the same night the Bombers played the hawks in a match which was built as a massive game and the bombers flogged them

1991 1st ever h/a game Crows defeated The Hawks by 86 points 24.11 (155) to 9.15 (69) in front of 44,902 fans at Footy Park. The Crows would go on to win 10 games for their first season

Port Adelaide V Brisbane Rd 22 2002 - hoped it would be the Grand Final preview. Alas.

Also remember a cracking NM/Brisbane in 1999 that ebbed and flowed and showed just how good Simon Black was going to be. Lions of 1999-2004 improved most games, great side to watch.

Best Freo games would be Freo/Geelong 2010, Freo/West Coast 2006 or Freo/NM 1998 at the WACA.

The Ess v Roos 1999 game was the best H&A match I have seen - Carey with 10 Lloyd with 8 - two very good teams going at it all day - lots of niggle during the whole game and an era when football was at its best.

Still name it as near best if your team had lost after leading by 51?
Yeah definitley - similar to cats v hawks in 1989 when Hawthorn came back.

A couple of things set these games apart from the 'close all the way games'. They usually involve changes in tactics, positional moves, etc. They are a bit more dynamic and there is a bit more to go over in reviewing the game.

Also, when there is only a couple of goals in it all game, the crowd tends to be a bit subdued until the final minutes. Bigger cheers come for goals as either a decent lead is created or a decent lead gets pulled back to 0.

How did the OP miss Round 14 09? Best match I've ever been to or will go to until we win a flag, I can still remember the massive talk about Clint Jones and would he be able to tag Gary Ablett, and then he goes out and kicks the first goal off the ground right in front of Ablett! It was a fantastic game to be at, crammed in with 54,000 people at Etihad.
It was a cracker of a game - saints got out to a lead, cats pulled it back, plenty of goals and a cracking finish!

The 1999 Round 17 game wasn't that bad on it's own actually, Carey kicked 10, Lloyd kicked seven, 288 points across the two teams and Essendon won a classic by 24 points.

North V Footscray, Round 22, 1998 deserves a mention.

My personal (biased) favorite is round 21, 2005 when Melbourne beat Footscray having been four goals down at the 21 minute mark.

The first two there are the two best games I've seen - not just exciting, but such high quality. 1999 I barely even minded losing, even to Essendon, because the game was so good. A much better contest than 2001 between two much better matched sides (and I think I'm being unbiased given North lost them both - in fact a nasty habit of losing classics for a while).

Don't watch much of other teams apart from Collingwood, and I haven't seen too many that could be regarded as H&A classics from them - in my thirteen years the great Pie games I can recall came in finals.

Saints v Geelong 2009 rnd 14. Best game -the intensity, the noise from the first bounce was incredible-it did not let up for a moment. Just a constant roar befitting of that game.

Put your thinking caps on folks. There are countless numbers of great home and away matches over the past thirty-odd years. Several yet to be mentioned are:
1. North Melbourne v Carlton 1976: These two clubs have contested numerous classic encounters in coloured times. Blight’s long bomb to win this match is memorable http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0Ct1eNANdQ
2. Carlton v Essendon 1981 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTodE0YJ8eo
3. Fitzroy v Collingwood 1992 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwDKwa9goOU

They had a segment on The Hanger tonight dedicated to that game with Lloyd and Carey talking about their memories of that match. 1st Vs 2nd in front of nearly 70k on a saturday afternoon at the G, hard and fast from start to finish with final scores being ESS 24.14 158 defeated NORTH 20.12.132. I thought Carey was going to kill Barry Young that day. Football at it's finest.

The "Round 14" game a few seasons back. Saints/Geelong.

Common for one mob to dominate a season, but to have 2 undefeated after 13 rounds was fantastic. Both on top of their game, IMO Geelong at their best that yr out of their recent era...Saints pushed them to becoming so good.

Greatest build up to a game i can remember...build up started after both unbeaten after first few rounds but noone expected 13 straight for both.

Games that big never live up to the build up, but that one did. Easily the highpoint of HnA games for a long time.

I remember thinking afterwards how there's absolute zero chance anyone could beat either of them...just tell them to raffle the flag.

And then the Grand Final was almost as good (probably better in the eyes of Cats fans!)
Famous for arguably the greatest piece of football theatrics ever - the TOE POKE that led to the goal that gave Geelong the lead in the final quarter.

After the 98 Marshmellow final there was a lot of feeling. Shame the Bombers did not get over the Blues - woudl have been a cracking Grand Final.
