I'd take anything Aker says with a grain of salt. Sure, he speaks his mind, but his mind works in mysterious ways....

Having said that was listening to Cornes and Rowe interviewing Adrian Anderson on 5AA last night, and the man never, ever gives a straight answer. By doing this he just causes rumours to grow.

Graham Cornes: "Now Adrian, there's a big rumour going around that an AFL player is on three strikes. Can you categorically confirm or deny that this is the case?"

Adrian Anderson:".......Graham, there is process involved where blah blah blah, spin spin spin, waffle waffle waffle, and that hasn't happened"

I'm sorry, but that is not a "no" to Cornes question. It could be that the "process" hasn't happened, or isn't complete or any other number of scenarios, that gives this legal eagle an out if he ever gets backed into a corner.

A bit later in the interview he was asked if an interstate team that finished higher on the ladder could lose the hosting of a home prelim to a Victorian club so that there would be a Prelim at the MCG.
His answer- "I haven't seen or heard about any proposals along those lines"
Cornesy: "so thats a definite no - it wont happen?"
AA:".......I haven't heard of anything along those lines"

He is a spin doctor of the highest order, and whilst I dont rate everything Aker says, I dont rate ANYTHING Adrian Anderson or Andrew Demetriou say, and (without personally condemning Franklin in any way as I have no proof) would not put it past them to cover something like this up to suit what they consider to be in the greater interest of the AFL as a business (not a sport).

Firstly this is a rumour, shouldn't it be on the scandals/rumour board?

Secondly, the AFL is huge, if you think they'd try and cover up something like this think again, the ramifications of covering something like this up would massive, i call bullshit.

According to BigFooty Buddy has been on 3 strikes before he was even drafted and accumulated countless more since.

Right now he should be somewhere in the thousands, it's just him, everyone else is clean.

This is what I don't understand, even if it were possible for the AFL to cover up something like this the risk to reward of the equation is just idiotic. It would destroy the game if the AFL were found to be covering up something like this.

Compare that to publicly crucifying a star player to show a take no prisoners attitude to drugs.

Why should the AFL be held to ransom by the media? Why are you expecting him to put his neck on the line for some borderline useless media personality?

On an issue like this, he is right - following protocol is paramount. AA knows that all will be revealed in good time - It's not as if the speculation is unhealthy for the game.

If the media weren't so rabid about these interviews, the administration wouldn't have to talk in double-speak. AA knows they've got a fetish for bringing up every single oversight or piece of misinformation supplied and they seem to take it personally.

Is this 5AA the same radio station that, when talking about the Adelaide FC, uses the term 'we'?

My god if these 3 strike rumors started over his Hamstring injury then god help us Bombers.
You guys are screwed if hamstrings are a symptom of drug use.

Thing is if people stopped to read carefully instead of skimming over articles they'd know the bleed in Buddy's hamstring was close to the nerve/tendon attachment hence the caution in his return.

Why do an interview in the first place if you are not going to answer one single question, with anything but doublespeak and spin?
If he has nothing to hide, how is he putting his neck on the line for anybody? They are hardly "rabid" questions.
Oversights and misinformation? The AFL are supposed to be the most successful and most professionally run sporting organisation in Australia - If the media cant ask them about these pesky little oversights and misinformation, without getting defensive and shutting up shop what is the point in doing the interviews?
Well I guess they wont have to worry to much about that soon - AFL media will fix everything. They will have their own reporters asking them their own "tough" questions! Hard-hitting interviews they will be!

Could the AFL seriously cover something like this up? Professional sportsmen and their administrators have some of the biggest egos in the country. Even if it was just Buddy, Kennett, Anderson, and Vlad, one of them would sooner or later spill the beans. But there are so many people involved in all facets of the AFL. Meh.

At the same time, I really wouldn't be surprised if Buddy was on two or three strikes. This is not singling out Buddy as a drug user at all. I have no concrete evidence to suggest he is or isn't. But the fact is, if we're realistic, every AFL footballer would be in contact with designer drugs. Some of them won't do it. And some of them will.

Spot on.

This would bring the AFL down if they were caught covering this up.

Bullshit.

They aren't even footballing questions, though and the reasons people want them answered are not compassionate. They are not out of concern over (Buddy's) wellbeing and that of family and friends.

They are scandalous and muck-raking in intent, and they are to be treated as such. Furthermore, they are questions he would be coached not to answer. They may well of been questions he indicated he wouldn't answer before going on the show.

They are, maybe a little more of your own investigation and analysis and less listening to 5AA shit-can everything within earshot is needed.

Your inference that it is the AFL who are the primary cause of this rumour growing is myopic beyond belief.

It's a clear showing of (dis)respect to 5AA - Even the manner in which the question was posed reeks of amateurism. The second question posed is completely laughable...

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has seen the odd footballer or two out and about and under the influence of something other than alcohol.

I'm surprised in this day and age nobody has whipped out their smart phone and recorded the event. Although that is arguably a low act, there would be people out there in society who would do just that and send the images/recordings to the major newspapers. That is why AFL players would need to tread very carefully at the behaviour in public.

this would have happened imo
a sneaky photo from a distance, zoomed in, sent to media and media said: "...errrr, we aint touching that with a ten foot barge pole"

You're kidding right? Channel 7 would love to pick up an exclusive story on a player under the influence with drugs. This would sell papers. There would be budding reporters licking their lips and drooling at the prospect of picking up such a story, providing their is enough evidence, which there would be, as a photo or recording count as significant evidence.

nope not kidding
THERE would have been photos
and "do you want your high paying job, or do you want to print these pictures?"

i reckon 99% would keep THEIR mouth shut
THERE is always someone that will say something tho and this is how this shite is prob getting out

imo

Well the person that sent in the photo would just publish it on facebook and it would go viral, without thousands of likes attached to the photo. Then the media would pick it up and run with the story, so that foolish reporter who initially said no would have missed out on the exclusive story.

Maybe not many people have seen these footballers intoxicated as one would like to think, or they have been in VIP areas where you are not allowed to take photos on your phone. Just a thought.

Party boy buddy up to his old tricks again. The corruption in this sport knows no boundaries. Thank god we have people like Aker telling it how it is!

Not footballing questions?? Huh??? Asking the 2IC of the AF(ootball)L if an AF(ootball)L player is on three strikes for drug use, is not a football question? Seriously?? Is it a Basketball question?

They are scandalous and muck-raking in intent, and they are to be treated as such. Furthermore, they are questions he would be coached not to answer. They may well of been questions he indicated he wouldn't answer before going on the show.

What?? It was a simple straightforward question, which, if there is no player on three strikes, should have been answered with a simple straight forward answer -NO. This alleviates all scandal and muck-raking. So if the answer isnt NO what is it? Why would he have to coached not to answer it if the answer is NO? Why would he have to indicate he wouldn't answer a question like that if the answer is NO?

I'm not saying the answer is YES, i am just saying that maybe Adrian Anderson is too used to spinning everything, that even when he gets an easy question he still has to answer it in the most not-answer-the-question-spin-it-as-much-as-possible way that he can so the he cant be pinned down on anything.

Your inference that it is the AFL who are the primary cause of this rumour growing is myopic beyond belief

Where did I say the AFL are the Primary cause of this rumour growing. Maybe a little more reading and less shit-canning of any poster that has a different opinion to yours, is needed.

It's a clear showing of (dis)respect to 5AA - Even the manner in which the question was posed reeks of amateurism. The second question posed is completely laughable...

Are you referring to the question about prelim finals? 2002 and 2003 say hello.....
