honestly it looks like he doesn't even want to play for the scum anymore at all, none of his teammates support him, would still like him at Richmond though:)

The thing is... Collingwood can't win the premiership without him. Unless he get's out his current funk and starts playing up to where he was last year, they have no chance... Proves how important he is to them I reckon.

Really hope we are not into this bloke, mentally soft .............

WHEN I see Travis Cloke these days, I see a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders, worn down by a silly contract renogotiations situation. These negotiations have been ill-timed and protracted ... Poppa Cloke ain't doin' his kid any favours. It's being compounded by the fact neither he nor Dawes can get a kick and it's all falling to him. I'm not saying we get him, not saying we don't try, but he'd feel a helluva lot more comfortable alongside Jack and Tyrone (if he were fit) at the moment and with a contract signed than his current predicament.
And seriously, people who think the guy can't play know nothing. Cloke has had many fine seasons, yet people are going to judge him ona few bad game sthis year???
I think once a contract is signed the kid will fire!!

Yeah I tend to think the same... He's playing like his heart and mind are no longer at Collingwood.

Just to be clear, I am not suggesting Travis cannot play. He is arguably the best contested mark in the league - although he's not the standout he once was.

He has had a couple of good seasons however his kicking for goal has always been subject to criticism. As it continues to be.

He is also, by any definition, mentally fragile. It's funny the amount of Richmond supporters jumping over themselves making excuses for him and many believe his contract negotiations are solely responsible for his form. That is a pretty big assumption. No, it's a huge assumption. He has had form slumps throughout his career.

I agree he plays the hardest position on the ground. I agree we could use the services of a monster CHF, who can take a grab. I agree with a lot of posters that is worth taking a punt on recruiting Travis - but -

What I do not agree with is David's asking price. Collingwood - widely credited as one of the best administrations in the league - also do not agree with Cloke Snr. I think most would argue they would be in the best position to judge.

Some posters point to the need to land a really big fish as if in some way that it signifies we have "arrived". They point to Judd as the example. I'd suggest that Judd could also be used as a negative example. He's every chance to end his career without playing in another GF.

I do not want to see Trav walk into Richmond as our highest paid player. I don't want to see us lose Conca or Ellis or one of our good young players in a year or two because we're paying over the odds for Cloke.

I finally believe we're building something at Tigerland and we've come far too long to think we're going to magically take a shortcut. Especially now.

I know Benny is too smart to blow our future on a pissing match with Collingwood. By all means pay a fair and reasonable price for Trav - based on this year's value. But if we pay what David is asking there will be a couple of blokes who will be laughing all the way to the bank - one of them will be Eddie McGuire.

Not at that price - no way he's even close to $1,000,000 per year. It'd simply be a bad business decision - something that I'm confident is a thing of the past at Punt Road.

I heard Robbo on SEN on Saturday say that we were into him, but our contract offer would be well under "the asking price" - and on that basis, he thought we were no chance of getting him...

So I think we're being sensible about it - offering him his decent whack - with the 5th year - and hope he wants to come to Richmond.

Two sides of the argument:
1) Would Travis Cloke improve our side
a) Yes he would
2) Does Travis Cloke represent value for money with cost and length of contract
a) No he does not

It seems an awful lot of money to commit to 1 player; if he was a Lockett or Carey that would be a different matter
The justification is that he takes the most contested marks in the AFL; what quality forwards are we comparing him against?

Going after the best CHF in the comp is a short cut

I would think, for too long, we havent made these plays, or even been in contention. I would call it smart if handled correctly, but to simply call it a short cut is short sighted

Think you missed my point Morro. Cloke is being touted some sort of panacea for all our troubles and that as soon as he walks in the door we're instantly in a grand final. Clearly that's not right.

I am saying we're in the beginning to middle stages of a (another) comprehensive rebuild and if we are going to compromise our ability to retain players and structure our side by bringing a selfish mercenary, then I hope we do our due diligence. I hope we can sell the message to Vickery, Martin, Maric and all our other young recruits when we're negotiating with them and letting them know why we can't pay them their market value.

And he's not the best CHF in the league, Hawkins is. Trav, would be lucky to be in the top five on this year's form. Which, let's be honest is the only true basis of assessment.

I agree with this.
But Cloke was clearly the standout CHF last season and likely the one before, which makes a lot of posts on here (not from you) redundant as some think he simply can't play!
Would be interested to see how some view Riewoldt's season, which I think has been to a degree disappointing, yet he could still win the Coleman Medal by default!!

Thanks for the reply mate, and well argued sir.

I just feel too many are undervaluing his worth to our side. he suffers at the pies like Jack does with us. No support! The 2 of them in the same team with a fit Ty and I believe we are a top 4 candidate, especially considering the other possibilities we are said to be adding to our 22.

The pieces of the Cloke puzzle will slowly come together when (& not if, but when) Malthouse will put pen down on paper at Visy Park as early as next week. Naturally, Travis will follow suit and sign a five year mega deal to join his old mentor at Carltank.

I'm actually now starting to think this is right... F*** Carlton.

The money for Travis is too much but then again signing him to Richmond could actually help our forward line.
He is a strong tall forward and it could take the pressure off jack being pretty much our key forward and getting double teamed all the time.

The million $ question is whether the Blues can fit him under their salary cap?
Surely they are already paying megabucks for the sevices of Judd, Murphy, Gibbs and to a slightly lesser extent Waite, Carazzo, Simpson & Kruezer.
There will be several delistings at season's end to make room for Travis and his entourage!
