With the TV series "Howzat" upon us I thought I'd ask for everyone's best Aussie test XI since the end of WSC.

I'll start with mine:

M.Hayden
M.Hussey
R.Ponting
G.Chappell
A.Border
S.Waugh
A.Gilchrist
S.Warne
J.Gillespie
D.Lillee
G.McGrath

I think they all pick themselves with probably only Hussey and Gillespie that could be debated.

There were certainly some players that were unlucky to miss out, but at the end of the day there's only 11 spots.

could argue boon and langer over hussey, i'd go langer in for hussey.
the 3rd quick spot could really be a raffle, Mcdermott, Bichel, lee.
I'd love to see lee just so we could have a lillee-lee opening partnership

Pretty impressed with Part 1 last night. Got 2 million viewers apparently.

Some of the actors looked uncannily like the real life people they were playing, or at least how they looked at the time.

I still probably preferred Rob Carlton's version of Packer in 'Paper Giants' but Lachy Hulme is pretty good too. What a tyrant Packer is! If half the stuff on that show is true he would've been one scary character to deal with.

Love it. Cant wait for the next episode....does anyone know when its on?

That was actually my main issue with it. I couldn't work out who was meant to be who, with a few exceptions. And what's with using the same actors over and over in Aussie productions?

Post WSC, Thommo was a shadow of himself, his career reached it's nadir when he was the 25th bloke to be picked on the 1985 Ashes tour. You'd be better off picking Merv Hughes. Not sure how AB doesn't get a run either.

Im wanting some all out pace here - someone to come in and soften bastards up. Fine, Ill have Brett Lee.

Out of Clarke and AB Id still choose Clarke. Never liked AB.

Plus AB wanted nohting to do with WSC so doesnt deserve to be in there....

This is it, although I'll probably put Langer in for Boonie, as much as we love the bloke. Langer was much underrated, Hayden lost his way when he retired

Hussey has made 60 runs opening at Test level.

If you're not picking him in the middle order, he shouldn't make this team IMO.

Matthew Hayden
Justin Langer
Ricky Ponting
Greg Chappell
Allan Border (c)
Steve Waugh
Adam Gilchrist (+)
Shane Warne
Dennis Lillee
Glenn McGrath (a promotion!)
Bruce Reid
12th - Andrew Symonds (professional fielder ;) )

Hussey has made thousands upon thousands of runs opening for WA. Hes only opened in a few innings for Australia. Id have him over The Garden Gnome. He can bat anywhere.

But this isn't about the best WA team of the past 20-30 years though, is it? There is not enough evidence at Test level to put him as an opener in such a team.

I think hes a better bat that Langer/Boon. For Huss to miss out over them I cant justify. Just my opinion mate.

It's all good, I know what you mean and if he had played up the top more I have no doubt he'd have done well and I'd be picking him too!

I think you have to put a weighting on Boon's runs, he played in some pretty shit house Test teams when he first started out. He was also a cornerstone of the revival of Australian cricket in the late 80's to early 90's. Hussey entered a world beating side. That's not to dismiss his achievements, but I would suggest that despite having to wait ten years to get his spot, Hussey has had it a bit easier than Boony did.

Respect your view but at an average of 43 and a strike rate of 41.....and would he be flexible to bat anywhere in any situation like Hussey has proved? Hussey's mere presense and enthusiasm galvinises any team.

Hussey for PM.

Hussey never faced four six foot West Indians* trying to knock his head for hours on end just for shit and giggles.

*And Malcolm Marshall (RIP) who was just under six foot.

Anyone watch this last night?

Wish they showed more real footage rather than the on-field actor impersonations. The actor playing Lillee couldnt bowl for crud!!!!!

Also too much sentimental emotional bullcrap with Kerry Packer, walks on the beach, tears. Erghhh. Focus on the cricket!!!

Still I enjoyed the series immensely.

1. David Boon
2. Mark Taylor
3. Ricky Ponting
4. Greg Chappell
5. Steve Waugh
6. Allan Border
7. Adam Gilchrist
8. Shane Warne
9. Jason Gillespie
10. Dennis Lillee
11. Glenn McGrath

12th- Mark Waugh

- Potent attack
- Two openers who succeeded against excellent opposition. Tough and underrated. Better than Langer/Hayden imo
- High quality slip cordon/fielding (Chappell, Taylor, Ponting, Border and Warne--Ponting and Border would probably patrol cover/midwicket)
- 3 out of the top seven left handers

Stats say otherwise, but the quaiity of bowling probably better (eg: Ambrose).

Did Taylor bat more with Boon or Slats?
