The 2012 US Open begins on Monday (Tuesday our time). The final major of the year. The final chance for glory for this season and again there are many interesting stories coming in. I'll have the previews once the draws are out but for now we have the qualifying taking place.

We are into the 2nd round of qualfying and there are three aussies left trying to qualify. James Duckworth has had an ok year on the challenger circuit and is trying to step his game to qualify, a tough but winnable match against Bobby Reyonlds. If he maanges to get through that then there could Berrer in the 3rd, might too much to ask, would have to play a very solid match. Brydan Klein probably a little out of his depth but won a round and faces Karol Beck in the 2nd round, given the guy has been playing weak challenegrs in Kahzathan for most of the year, I would be very surprised if he won. Rodionova won her first rounder as well. J-P Smith, Monique Adamzcak and Sacha Jones all lost.

Yep, a great draw for Djokovic. Murray copped another brutal draw though; if he wants this title he'll probably have to beat Raonic, Tsonga, Federer and Djokovic in consecutive matches. :p

Because Federer will probably have to beat Berdych, Murray and Djokovic. The latter two in consecutive days. As we saw at the Olympics, the final will be a blood bath if he has to get through a physically demanding SF.

I would be surprised Berdych made it to the QF let alone being a tough match with the type of form he is in. Federer has always been supremely fit, obivously this draw is a huge favour for Djokovic but I wouldn't call him an overwhelming favourite.

OOP is out for day 1, Sam is first up on Centre at the nice time of 1am... While Donald Young gets his backside kicked Roger Federer leads the night session.

The Aussies actually got pretty decent draws for once.

Tomic Vs Berlocq: Berlocq is a clay courter. Tomic should win easily. A potential round 2 match up with Roddick would be fun.

Matosevic Vs Cilic: Marinko has had a good year but isnt winning this one.

Hewitt Vs Kamke: You would think Lleyton should win this but after the way he played against Troicki anything is possible.

Ebden Vs Ito: I saw Ito play in Brisbane he didnt look that great he is more a challenger player Ebden should get the job done

Stosur Vs Martic: Anything could happen Martic has had a good year.

Gajdosova Vs Petrova: Another lose for Jarka.

Dellacqua Vs Tsurenko: I saw Tsurenko beat Schiavone at the AO. She has a big game but Casey is in form could go either way.

Rogwaska Vs Minella: Liv will go in the underdog but she can beat Mandy.

Rodionova Vs Cohen: Rodinova should win easily. Cohen is a ITF whore.

Cant wait till Tuesday morning :)

Men's preview:

Coming into the final major of the year there seem to be 3 clear favourites who can win the title and then the rest of the pack a long way behind. This has been the case for a few years now but here is there is no clear favourite between the three which leads to three very interesting storylines.

Roger Federer has now achieved the one record he so desperately wanted, most weeks at no.1 by winning his 7th Wimbledon title, his 17th Grand Slam title. There would be a few that might question his motivation to keep going but his results after Wimbledon show that it is still clearly there. A silver medal at the Olympics and a win at shows that he has the form coming in to win again at New York. His draw starts off easilya gainst Donald Young, he will breeze through his first two matches and then we are have the talented but muggish play of Verdasco. There is no real reason to say Roger won't get through that fairly easily too. Fish/Simon in the 4th round don't really have enough to hurt Federer at this stage. It certainly isn't easy but it is not really that tough and considering how comfortably Federer beat Fish in Cincy there should be no trouble here. Berdych is the QF seed he would have to face but his form has been in question from Wimbledon onwards that it's hard to see whether Berdych will make it that far. Losses to Gulbis, Gasquet & Raonic, while all talented players and no huge problem in losing to but as a top 10 player he wouldn't want to be losing to them. The loss to Darcis at the games was awful. A final at Winston-Salem might help the confidence and after the first round loss at Wimby he will certainly be hungry. He faces Goffin in the first, probably Istomin in the 2nd and Querrery. I've gone with Querrey upsetting him in the 3rd but there certainly some interesting matchups there. Almagro is the other high seed int he section, he tends to play his best stuff on clay even though has the game to do so. Roger Federer to get out of that section.

Andy Murray finally got some "major" glory. Even though it wasn't a grand slam, it was the Olympics in his home country with a lot of pressure riding on it and he played the match of his life. The tennis he played that day against Federer was the sort of tennis people were wanting him to play for ages. He has the shots but can always tend to be a bit too defensive when it comes to the big matches and it has been frustating because his big wins like his match win Nadal a few years ago, he played solid aggressive tennis and outhit Nadal. There was no question after the Olympics he was the form player and his best chance of winning a major would be here in New York. Now there is the results after the Olympics. The pulling out of Canada made sense because he needed the rest and looked like they were would be playing back-to-back matches on the same day. Then the was unexplainable loss to Chardy in Cincy that now brings him back to the other two. Is this a post-Olympics slump? The good thing is you don't have to play Roger Federer till the semis so there is time to hit some form. Bad thing he has some tough players to play before so he better be ready to play some good tennis. First two should be fine, Lopez is always a tricky oppoent in the 3rd but again you would think Murray would be too solid. Now the 4th round is where things get really interesting, the contiually hyped up and talented Raonic. Raonic has beeaten Murray this season back on the clay so the upset potential there and could be a 4th round classic. Tsonga or Cilic in the quarters, Tsonga is a little bit of a question mark after he had to pull of Cincy with a knee injury. Won a few matches in Winston-Salem so seems to be fit but whether he can beat Murray in a best-of-5 set match is very questionable. Andy Murray to get out of that section.

Novak Djokovic this time last year was without of doubt the best player in the world winning basically everywhere and won the US Open to boot. This year his level has seemed to drop off one or two pegs, just hasn't the same brutal abilty to get every ball back and be able to quickly turn that into offense. It's only a fraction of speed but it has made a difference, he honestly looks a little tired. He is still getting some results, after the disappointment of no medal at the Olympics he made the final at Cincy but that was a loss to Federer with a 6-0 set involved there too. His section though is very good. First three rounds will be a breeze and it won't be till the 4th round is where he gets his first test. Dolgopolov is the seed would face but his form has been lolbad. Wawrinka would be his likely opponent who found some really good form in Cincy making the semis. Could test Djokovic but he should get through, maybe in 4 sets. Del Potro is the question mark in this section, his issue is with his other wrist from the one he injured which he got checked out after Cincy after complaining of soreness. Obivously it's hard to tell how this will go but if he is fit he certainly is capable of beating Djokovic after Del Potro's win in the bronze medal match. Probably the most interesting first rounder is Del Potro/Nalbandian so Del Potro better be ready to play or he could be out first round. Roddick, Monaco & Tomic are all in this section. Novak Djokovic to get out of that section.

The final quarter we will preview (the 3rd quarter) is the odd one out. Ferrer is the 4th with Nadal pulling out, Ferrer deserves his ranking completely but he has never been close to the top guys. He is a former semi-finalist here back in 2007 when he upset Nadal. He had a strange loss to Nishikori at the Olympics and than Wawrinka just smashed him in Cincy so it is a little hard to gauge his form and he has a tough opening round against big serving Kevin Anderson, Ferrer should be too solid if all goes to plan but this where I have gone with an upset to Anderson. This section is full of players who could take that semi-final spot. Tipsarevic is the other high seed and while he has done very in the last 12-24 months, it's uncertain to see whther he can take that step to a semi in a slam. John Isner is also in a good section to try and defend his QF, although Kohliscrheiber has potential to beat him in the third. Gasquet is another player could cause a couple of surprises and Tommy Haas who after his fantastic season is playing Gulbis in probably another one of those interesting first rounders, look forward to that. And the one roughie which no one will like me saying but it's Lleyton Hewitt. This draw is anamazing opportunity to go deep and while he has that awful loss to Triocki he has picked up his game at the Olympics, working Djokovic in a 3 setter loss and looked good in beating Youzhny who he could very well play in the 2nd round. I actually have him make the semis out of this section, now this is also based on Anderson beating Ferrer in the first round but if he manages to get to the 4th round there is actually no player I wouldn't give Lleyton a decent chance at winning. Hope he comes out ready to play.

The Aussies have 4 male entrants with Tomic, Ebden & Matosevic all getting direct entry and Lleyton the wildcard with him still being ranked outside the top 100. This is a pretty good draw for them. Tomic our highest ranked male player drew the clay courter Berlocq, providing Bernard comes out ready to play which in the last couple of weeks looks like doing a bit more he should win. This leaves us with a very interesting 2nd rounder with Roddick and given Andy's terrible form it could be a potential upset or at least a very interesting match, with Juan Monaco as even a 3rd rounder this must be a potential chance to make the 2nd week, expect him to disappoint and not do this. Matosevic got Cilic in the first round and there is no way Marinko can get his first Slam match win here despeite hit fantastic season, hope he kicks on during the Asian swing. Ebden has been in pretty poor form of late, he has seemed to have regressed of late and while Ito is a player he can certainly beat, he has to go out and make sure he is mentally right because with his form he can't take anything lightly. Jeremy Chardy would be in the 2nd round for him if he was to win, would give him a slight chance but Chardy should be too strong. And as I said with Lleyton, his draw is the best he could of hoped for. He should be too solid for Kamke in the first round and then Youzhny in the 2nd round is certainly winnable given he just beat him in Cincy just a couble of weeks ago. Whether he'll go deeper we'll see but the game is still there.

As far as the winner goes I have gone with Roger getting revenge for his last two losses over Djokovic at the US Open in what could be another great match. A lot depends on how much Murray can take out of Federer in the semis but his fitness should land him in good stead. Again, it's just so hard to see anyone from outside the top 3 taking the title.

Yeah, both Tomic and Hewitt have decent draws.

Roddick and Monaco are definitely winnable matches for Tomic - let's hope he decides to turn up for those contests.

Hewitt/Youhzny 2nd round will be difficult but Lleyton is tougher and I can see him fighting through. Saying he'll make the semi's is a huuuuuge stretch though, despite how wide open that quarter of the draw is.

I've gone for Isner to come out of that section, but it's anybody's guess really.

Saying he'll make the semi's is a huuuuuge stretch though, despite how wide open that quarter of the draw is.

It is, no doubt but it's more my upset pick for the tournament really and a number of things will have to happen to get through. I can see Isner getting through thats ection as well, there are so many guys who are capable.

Women's preview:

As how the men's had 3 guys who could potentially win it with the women's you have a number of players who could win this. There is however one outside favourite out of this leading pack, while I disagree with the odds of $1.90 Serena Williams has to be the favourite. She has won Wimbledon and the gold medal this year playing pretty domiant tennis including smashing this year's French Open champion Sharapova in the Olympics final. However, she is not the no.1 seed and that honour falls to Azarenka.

Victoria Azarenka started off the year looking like woman to beat. She won the Australian Open, got on a winning streak and it wasn't until Miami she had her first loss. Since then she hasn't been as strong, she got beaten by Serena in the semis at Wimbledon and managed to get a bronze medal but she certainly hasn't been the same player since the start of the year, a level or two below anyway. her section starts off pretty solidly, I can't see anybody troubling (remember this is women's tennis and anything can happen) her to the 4th round where she could face Lisicki who is trying to breakthrough as a top player. She has got an injury issue coming in after not playing Cincinatti but if fit she has the game that could make a good 4th round match. The other seed in her quarter is the defending champion, Sam Stosur. Our favourite Aussie girl played the match of her life to beat Serena Williams last year to take the title but there has been no talk of that happening again this year. She hasn't won a tournament since then and only made two final and the only of note was in Doha earlier this year. The match that will define her year though will be the semi-final loss to Sara Errani at Roland Garros, a match she no business in losing. That has seemed to hurt hur confidence although I wouldn't really even look at her grass court season for form anymore. In the States, she has been ok but nothing to suggest that she can win it again, a tough 3rd round loss to safarova in canada and then played a good match against Venus Williams in the quarters in Cincy but again loss a close one. She has struggled to win close matches all year. Her draw is ok, Martic in the first round is an interesting talent who made the 4th round at roland Garros, however she hasn't played since Wimbledon which is odd but Sam will have to be ready to play. Lapenchenko who she coudl face in the 3rd round who a great solid year and is left-handed, potential upset could happen, will be a tough match. The 4th round is the most interesting. We have Na Li who amde the final in Canada and looks to be in pretty good form, with a new coach in her corner she is looking to set herself up for a big run. She is a player that Sam has a good record against though, it's sort one of these things that don't make sense but Na Li has had issues with Sam's topspin. The other player is Kim Clisjters who is playing her final ever match in her great career. She will be the sentimental favourite that is certain. It's hard to expect her to win or get deep but she's always a danger with her game. I have Na Li beating her in the 3rd round then losing to Stosur in the 4th and Azarenka should be able to get out of this section.

Maria Sharapova is the 3rd seed coming into here and is a potential contender. She had a stomach virus that forced her to pull out of Cincy so can't be a 100% on her form but it shouldn't be an issue. The French Open champion and Olympic silver medalist really doesn't have any trouble till the 4th round where she could face Safarova or Petrova. petrova is a tour vetrean who can always you a match on her paricular day and Safarova seems to be on a improved run. Maria should get through to the the quarters. The other part of this quarter has the ever improving Petra Kvitova who has been the form player of the American Hard court swing, wins in Canada and New Haven shows that her game is heading back up getting closer to the form that won her last year's Wimbledon and YEC titles. She arguably has the biggest game on tour when it's on but it can be so wrong when off, her fitness has been a slight concern as well. She would have to face Wickmayer (a former SF) in the 3rd and maybe an out of form Bartoli or Petkovic in the 4th round. I think she'll get through to the quarters and have a great match with Sharapova. Kvitova to reproduce her good form to get through and make the semis.

Serena Williams is the 4th seed but coming as the no.1 contender. She won the Wimbledon title and Olympcis gold medal. She lost to Kerber at the quarters of Cincy but as we know with Serena the form leading into the tournament doesn't matter a whole lot with her. Her draw she should get through no problems. She has the young american Vandeweghe in the first round and it looks like Peng/Makarova in the 3rd round. This would be interesting considering her unexplainable loss at the Australian Open to makarova but this time around you can't think lightning will take place twice in a year. Kirlilenko in the 4th round also could be interesting but she doesn't quite have the weapons to hurt Serena but Maria K has improved with her 4th place finish at the Olympics. Caroline Wozinacki is the highest seed apart from serena and although might improving her form slightly but comes in with an injury concern after pulling out in a match at New Haven, she says she'll be fine but she doesn't really have the game to challenger anyways. She does have a pretty good draw to get her to the 2nd week, other part has Ivanovic, Schiavone and the improving Stephens. Ivanovic could be looking at getting to the quarters with this draw. But I see no one stopping Serena making the semis.

Radwanska has been trying to improver her game over the last 12-24 months, she has been winning title all over the world playing some smart, crafty and even aggressive tennis (in her way). Making her first Slam final at Wimbledon should give her the confidence she can contend at the majors and despite a poor loss at the Olympics she can give herself a chance. However, she also has an injury concern having to pull out with a shoulder injury from New Haven which has caused some issues in the past. Again, it'll be a question of whether she will be 100% fit. If she is, you could argue it is a tough draw. Jankovic in the 3rd will always give her a good match but her form has contiually fallen since she was no.1 in the world. Cibulkova in 4th round is also another tough competitor that is also a chance at an upset so there should be some good matches in there. Radwanska to get through to the quarters provding she's fit. The other part of the quarter has some interesting players. Last year's surprise semi-finalist Kerber is the other high seed and she has kicked on in the last 12 months and is arguably one of the most improved players of these last 12 months. However she faces a tough ask in the 2nd round with Venus Williams being unseeded which should be the match of the 2nd round. With Venus and her condition, she can feel good one day and bad the next so it's very hard to judge but a semi final in Cincy shows the game is still there for Venus. Paszek in the 3rd round and you can say Kerber has the toughest draw out of the top players. McHale or Errani in the 4th round is a bit easier given McHale is a much weaker version of Kerber and Errani hasn't done anything since the Roland Garros final. Kerber to come out of this section and upset Radwanska but a number of different things could happen in this section.

The Aussies had a fairly good draw. We have already previewed Sam's draw and the hope is that she can make the quarters but anything can happen with her. A few of the girls are in the top section with the wildcard Olivia Rogowska facing Mandy minella in the first round, winnable but it's a level up for her and might be too tough. She has a match in New York before when she too Safina when she was no.1 to 3 sets. Casey Dellacqua is coming off a nice semifinal performance in Dallas and has got her back in the top 100, her highest ranking in her comeback. She faces qualifer Tsurenko in the first round and while I don't know much about her hopefully Casey bring in the confidence from last week's performance and get her a win here which would solidify her ranking in the top 100. Na Li would be in the 2nd round so that's as far as it goes. Rodinova qualified and got a very good draw in the wildcard Julie Cohen who is known to be an ITF specialist. rodionova can get some much need points and would face Lepenchko in the 2nd round, she would be a shot but her game isn't at the same level as a couple of years ago and I think she loses here. Gajdosova has Petrova in the first round and he rform has been so bad that I will already say she'll lose and very easily.

My tip for the title is Serena, she wants this title so bad, she come up with some funny remarks before the Open saying everybody is against her for some reason at her home Slam (when will this girl ever grow up?). She wants to make up for last year and I think she'll do it beating Kvitova in a classic final.

Good start from the Aussies this morning. Stosur cleaned up Martic 6-1 6-1. Casey beat Tsurenko 6-3 6-2. And Liv is currently playing and the score is 2-6 6-3. Come on Liv. Casey plays Li Na nex round.

Stosur cleaned up Martic 6-1 6-1.

She won the first 19 points :thumbsu: Good performance from Sam, her draw looks good to make the 4th round at least with that form.

Really good win for Casey, a huger boost for her, look forward to watching her against Li.

Matosevic 2 sets up on Cilic! would cap off a great day for the Aussies.

Edit: beaten haha

Not a bad day for the Aussies then, hopefully Marinko can get up when the match finishes. I'm so tempted to stay up and watch, but I should probably put my tennis addiction aside for a night for uni....

I watched Sam's match last night, and although she played well, I'm not sure if one can take a lot out of that match as Martic was so clearly out of match practise. Although she served bloody unbelievably. Good stuff from Casey and Rodionova though. At least Jarka put up a fight, so I spose we'll have to take it for the minute lol.
Now for the boys tonight, hopefully I can wake up to some good news tomorrow.
C'ARN MARINKO!!
