Terrible, shocking news.

My deepest sympathies to all his loved ones.

Anyone who pulls on the Port jumper becomes a cherished member of the Port family and community forever, regardless of whether they've played 1 game or 400.

John, we thank you for your service to our club. You are now a part of our history and our heritage and you will be forever in the hearts of all of us at the PAFC, just as you no doubt will be at Collingwood too.

R.I.P.

OMG, I can't believe it. Tragic news. RIP & condolences to his family, friends and everyone at the PAFC.

I'm absolutely shattered, I know how close he was with the Pies boys still, and he seemed like he fitted in well at Port as well. A huge loss for both clubs, although we have benefited from his influence on our clubs.

RIP Johnny.

It makes you think about what is really important in life doesn't it? i just pray that the AFL media and the wider football community treat this tradegy delicately out of respect for the family and friends of John. Like so many others who have posted before me I cannot even begin to imagine how horrific this is for the footy club, the AFL and most importantly his close friends and family.

Port Adelaide has lost a great bloke, he was loved by the Collingwood lads and i know this will hurt them as well.
Met him at the Westpac Centre and he was a great guy, very friendly.
Gonna get down to Alberton and have a beer after work and pay my respect.
Think something should be done between both Port and Collingwood to remember a great bloke.

With you, would love to see a game of something to be played in his honour.

Agreed with how fortunate our players should be to be fit and healthy and living their dream.

Also agree with how Jmac always gave it 110%, and how the players should look up to him if they're ever our of legs or dont believe in them selves.

Sure he may not have been the most skillful players on our list but he was one of the players that always gave it his all out on the field. I will be one of the first to admit I did get frustrated with some of his skills, but I will admit that he would never give in no matter how bad of a day he was having.

R.I.P John McCarthy.

not sure what can be added, that hasn't already been said....this devasting news, is plainly just unfair...

feels like someone just got a sledgehammer out and slammed it through the entire footy community who are reeling...this is really awful. All the best to Port and JMac's family...so so sorry to hear this.

Such terrible news when a young life is cut so tragically short :(

Supported John on his change over to Port, wishing him well and watched with pride as he looked to be cementing a spot on Port's team. Struck me about what might have been had he stayed with us this year as we had our injuries, but thought it was a great outcome for him. And now this.

No parent should ever have to bury their child. Ever.
My thoughts, wishes and prayers are with his family and friends and anyone who is suffering.

I posted on the Collingwood board a thank you for the Power faithful who had expressed their grief so openly and also said they would support the Magpies this week. To be able to see past the shock, the grief and the sadness, and to suggest such a "football" thing to do, it is truly quite amazing and shows great character that through the haze of all this sadness, there can be solace found in footy. Hang in there and know that our clubs are Magpies by name, we share a common history and much respect.

This may not be the time for a football-related post and I apologize if my timing offends anyone, but here it is.

PAFC players, when you're on the training track next year and you're feeling tired, you think about how hard John McCarthy would've worked if he was lucky enough to still be around like you are, and you make damn sure you do the same. When you're on the field and somebody needs to make an option, you think about how John McCarthy would've pushed through the pain to make that option if he was lucky enough to still be on the AFL field living his dream like you all are, and you make damn sure you do the same. You leave absolutely nothing on that field next year, because you're incredibly lucky to not only be on that field, but just to be alive and well.

On a similar note, if John is somewhere looking down on us right now, then I hope he gets to see his old teammates at Collingwood win a premiership. That playing group has lost a teammate and friend just like ours has.
Would have posted something similiar.

Terrible terrible news, puts a lot of things into perspective.

RIP John.

I really have to stop reading this thread, my eyes are red raw. Still surprised how shocked and upset I am having never met the bloke.

My condolences to all who knew him.

RIP John.
