Hey,
I was just wondering if anyone knew the amount of players that have won a premiership VFL/AFL (not including night/ressies).
Also how many players have played a single game, so I can then work out the percentage of players to play the game that win a premiership.
Also if possible would anybody be able to work out the percentage of australians that win a premiership or even the world.
Cheers

Australian Bureau of Statistics for current and historical Australian population figures. A search for 'world population' will give you the population of the World.

In future put your questions in the Stats Questions (2) thread where the people with the player databases will more likely see them.

Hmm. I have it as 1411 playing on winning GF sides, plus a further 36 who played at any time during Essendon's 1897 and 1924 premierships, for 1447.

The Season Guide appears to have included 18 players from Ess. 97 & 24, the criteria for which isn't immediately obvious, though presumably there is one.

Criteria was premiership players not winning final/grand final teams, so they might have Essendon players from the last or all of the round robin finals teams in 1897 and 1924. I imagine there would be some overlap from the 1897 team to the 1901 Essendon premiership team and more from the 1923 team to 1924.
Minor mystery develops as to who are regarded as the Essendon 1897 and 1924 'premiership players'.

Yes, it seems they're counting players who played the round robin as premiership players.

Alas, my AFLSG (which covers up to 2004) says 1315, I say 1314 in the same period. The only way of finding the problem is to laboriously cross check their list with my list. Not fun.

Very odd indeed. On page 768 of the current Guide Arch Sykes is listed for 1897 in the [Every Premiership Player] section, but on page 826 [Ladders & Final Scores] his name is not among those listed as playing for Essendon in that first VFL flag-winning team.

The 2005 guide lists 21 players in Ladders and Finals section, I have 23 players turning out in the RR, Sykes and Maurie Collins are mssing. Collins is also missing from the premiership players for 1897 (though his 1901 is noted)
In the 2012 Season Guide Maurie Collins is on the list of Every Premiership Player for 1897 & 1901. Strangely, Leon Davis (Collingwood 2010) isn't on the list, as far as I know he was officially classed as a premiership player despite only playing in the drawn Grand Final and not the replay.

Reports of of premiership caps awarded by the League (before medals) in 1897 and 1924 don't mention who would have the status of a 'premiership player' and be eligible to receive them
In 1941 the League awarded Premiership medals to Harold Ball, Ron Barassi Snr. and Keith Truscott although none played in Melbourne's Grand Final win, saying that if they had not been overseas on active military service they would have played. Should they be in the list of 'premiership players' for 1941? The League currently seems to have forgotten that they were at one time given the status of 'premiership players'.
In reference to Leon Davis in 2010, Doug Heywood played for Melbourne in the 1948 drawn Grand Final but did not play in the replay and is not listed as a 'premiership player'. Did Davis get a medal?

That is very interesting, Michael. Davis was apparently given a medal, but perhaps they still don't recognise him as a premiership player and that is why he isn't on the list. Or they may have simply made an error and left him off. It certainly wouldn't be fair on Heywood if Davis is officially classed as a premiership player and he isn't. FWIW I'm leaving Davis on my list for now at least, but it would be nice to have a definitive answer.

Why Leon Davis gave away his premiership medallion
  • Jon Ralph From: Herald Sun April 27, 2011 12:00AM
LEON Davis just wasn't that interested in his 2010 premiership medallion.
He might have earnt it by playing in the first Grand Final, and being a key member of the side that got Collingwood to the big dance.
But having failed to make an impact in that contest and making way for Tyson Goldsack, it sure doesn't occupy pride of place on his mantlepiece.
As the first non-player to receive a premiership medal under new AFL rules, it quickly made its way back across the Nullarbor.

Premiership medals for both grand finals

Date September 29, 2010

THE AFL will award premiership medals to players who miss the grand final replay.
The AFL Commission yesterday reviewed the rule where a player who took part in last Saturday's draw, but was absent this weekend, would not be awarded a medal.
This means St Kilda's Michael Gardiner, who has less than a 25 per cent chance of playing on Saturday because of a hamstring injury, and Collingwood's Leon Davis, who faces the axe, will be awarded a medal if their team wins.

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said the decision was common sense. ''We felt, after discussions and consultation with several people, that it seemed just and right to offer players who played this week … that if their team goes on to win the grand final and they're not playing, they should be awarded a premiership medal. They have contributed, and we think it's a fair and just thing to do,'' he said.
In 1977, North Melbourne had an unchanged team for what proved to be a winning replay against Collingwood.

No mention of Doug Heywood so unlike tied Brownlows it was not made retrospective nor posthumous - Ron Barassi Snr. had been killed in Libya 3 months before the decision was made to award the extra medals in 1941 (Ball and Truscott were to die later before the war's end).
