Firstly, talk of Wellingham trade is not based on his lack of ability, but his currency. I don't think Wellingham is a forward pocket, but he is great around any ball being thrown-up in ruck contest in the forward 50. We havent spent much time there this season so that advantage has been diminished.

I think if Daisy is right next season, we have a pacey winger/mid/resting forward to work with. Wellers does have pace, which is his advantage, and certainly can get in his opponents face if we ever decide to tag again.

But you have to weigh this up against any potential advantages you may gain in a trade.

Swan and Ball have two years left and no-one yet ready to fill those roles so far as I can tell. We'd be left with Pendles, Blair, Thomas and Beams, plus some cameos. Josh Thomas may or may not make it. Someone like Caddy would be timely if all the wraps on him are on the money.

If you look at Hawthorn, their mids are not quick at all. In fact to my eye their only pacey mid/forward is Rioli. We have Thomas who provides that pace for both positions. Moving the ball quickly is not just about leg pace, but winning it and sending it by boot quickly forward or to a good option.

I think the way for us to look at the trade table is to see what we have in excess being tabled for something we need.

At the minute we need a mobile ruck (at the very least) and another inside ball winner (planning). If we can retain Wellers and address our needs, then that's all good, but I wonder if we can do that with our draft picks alone while we're in the window.

Agree Spicey.. IF we are looking to trade this year, then Wellingham is the most likely to figure as bait- he's the right age, has currency, and though valuable, is not irreplaceable.

I would be extremely surprised if we're not in the market for a mature-age second ruck/forward- someone to put pressure on/replace Wood and Dawes... and that's assuming Cloke stays. I'd also hope (optimistically?) that we're not going to be trading out of the early rounds of the draft, given that we've done just that in four of the five previous years.

the other one is Blair he is surplus to our needs (as much as I like him) he has currency and could net us a quality needs based player.

Geelong managed to keep their list together by all players agreeing to take unders for years and to my mind no-one buckled. Yes, Costa tried to wangle a deal with Cotton-On to keep Babe Jesus, but it wasn't accepted by Ken Wood, so he left. The group wasn't fractured by the hope of retaining Ablett.

The whole Cloke melodrama (presuming it happens) means we'll never now be able to make any such demands on our playing group. And if you can't make wage restraint demands on the playing group like that, then the market absolutely rules and dictates our list management.

In that scenario, you have to look to releive cap pressure and address needs.

That's also possible, although I think Wellingham will carry more cachet as a potential recruit- if only for his size and speed. I can easily believe Melbourne are interested, given the career-best game he played against them a couple of years ago.

It might be a stretch to call either Wellingham or Blair 'surplus' to our needs, it's just that we have a couple of glaring holes that need to be filled. Ideally we'd like to keep them both- we've got some hard decisions to make come October.

Do not trade Goldsack. Tries his heart out every game and there are other players that should be used as trade bait ahead of him. Keep the Sack!

i'd try my heart out if i played for collingwood as well.

players have to do more than try.

that said if he can get through another preseason without getting sick and dropping 10kg he could improve further, needs another 5kg+ and become a hard arse enforcer, he has some speed, and his tackles stick, we need some blokes who hurt the opposition physically

Can't agree with that. Goldenbors does not leave you wondering about his effort and is absolutely the type of team and defensive minded player we need. They can't all be champs but the role players need conviction. He's my man.

Agree. You trade goldsack and suddenly our team looks a lot softer. Wellingham and goldsack I think are our only 'hard men' left. Leigh brown was enough man for the whole team. His role was so underrated.

Just because Wellingham clumsily hit Kade Simpson high it doesn't automatically mean he is a 'hard man'.
Very rarely do you see Wellingham on the bottom of the packs, putting blocks for Pendles, Swan etc.
He is mainly a receiver, not that their is anything wrong with that.

Geelong do 'spin' this a bit because they did lose a few.
Ablett
Mumford
King
Playfair
Prismall

Other than Ablett the others were fringe players but the situation is not dissimilar to us

what do you mean you dont agree, you dont agree with the statement you have to do more than try?

its a fact

how hard a player tries is only a small part of how good a footballer a player is
