Collingwood's 2012 Draft Prospect Talk - Picks 18, 19, (updated), 20, 38

Just those highlights. He definitely has some AFL attributes going off the video. You can't teach that pace and in particular that lateral movement. I also really liked that he seemed to have the composure to slow down and think through his kick in the last couple of strides. So many fast players blaze away. Can't really comment beyond that. I wonder if he wins a lot of the ball?

Not enough sadly. Only averages around 13 disposals per game in the WA Colts which isn't nearly enough.

If he won 15 diposals per game in the seniors then he'd be spoken about as a top 10 selection because when he does have the ball he can often do something with it.

Loving a bit of Garlett, Stringer and Vlastuin. Not loving the feeling the these guys might be snapped up in the picks just before ours. :(

But I trust the brains-trust to make the right call either way. I think it can be hard for recruiters in some respect, because we expect them to pick up a beauty with our first picks, but the best talent in their opinion might already be gone. There's not much they can do but pick the best of what's available and be judged on that.

would love Menzel to be available, would definitely take the risk. He is all class.

Garlett or Simpson, get at least one hopefully.

Stringer is a beast, would be happy for him to come in, but i don't see why we would need him, he isn't an out and out forward like Cloke, not a 2nd ruckman, the only posi he could play for us is the 2nd forward role, which you think Paine would have at the moment.

Out of the videos, Ben Kennedy looks like a gun, great left foot, and decision making. Just what we need.
get it done collingwood!

You can see the ranges Jason Phelan has here for this draft. Menzel at 5-15, Garlett, Membrey, Jaksch and Kennedy at 10-20, Stringer, Vlastuin, Graham and Simpson 15-25.

In other words none of the aforementioned seem particularly out of reach. Sure to grab a couple.

# 17 Stringer
# 18 Garlett
# 20 Menzel* (Dawes pick off Dees most likely)
# 39 Simpson

How good would that be...

Kennedy and hovrat are 174cm and 175cm we are already a smaller side not sure if adding anoth garden gnome is the way to go.
Vlat is reportedly a plodder again not sure if we want another "cruiser" 1 paced mid, when we were cut up by legs speed this last year.

i think with sidebottom sinclair williams fasolo elliot blair krakour we are already on a short side, i'd only want to bring in max 1 guy below 183 ish

I am staggered 'experts' are talking of Stringer falling to our first pick. He is a gun that kid and the right comparison is JObe Watson but a better leap and hence can hurt fwd of the ball more. If he landed with us would be delightfully amazed.

Woudl also be surprised if Gartlett got through and pretty sure Simpson gone by #39.

Getting more confident that Menzel, Jaksch or Shaw will slip to us and Vlaustin I think will as well as Ben Kennedy who just seems to be falling victim to his size. Still think he will be before us but might the 'slider'.

Other names folks should so some homework on that will be around about those picks are guys like Rory Atkins, Matt Haynes, Tom Clurey but geez it drops away pretty heavily after 20-25 I reckon.

Kennedy and Hovrat seem very Blair like to me and I don't think a side can carry more then 1 midget as Blair gets exposed for size against the bigger bodied mids.

Simpson at 39 was a stretch as i said a wish list lol, I hope we take Simpson whether with a 2nd rounder or 1 of our 3 1st round picks.

Shaw would be a good get and I'm not sure we need Jaksch another tall defender when we have a surplus that are all AFL quality not even potential Brown, Reid and Keeffe have all shown form at afl level.

Stringer and Garlett probably will get snapped up before pick 18 but you never know.

Think you are right with Hrovat but gee if he slipped to #39 (unlikely) you would take him wouldnt you? Kennedy much better than Blair and would happily take him anywhere. I have seen a lot of that kid and he is pure class and he is a terrific kid as well.

I agree on SImpson and knew where you were coming from. I would take him at #20 for sure.

I favour Shaw over Jaksch but dont forget I think Jaksch is a very good tall fwd. Seen him play very well there and he looks natural as well. I cant split them.

Anyway it will be nice pondering 3 players around that mix for a while but it will be hard as its still unclear to me where they all land. I have this is a current top 30 but am literally changing every time I look at it so dont read a lot into it, havent matched to clubs yet and have a view after 20-25 its a raffle;

1 Greater Western Sydney Lachie Whitfield
2 Greater Western Sydney Jimmy Toumpas
3 Greater Western Sydney Brody Grundy
4 Melbourne (GWS compensation - Tom Scully) Jonathan O'Rourke
5 Western Bulldogs Sam Mayes
6 Western Bulldogs (GWS compensation - Callan Ward) Lachie Plowman
7 Port Adelaide Jake Stringer
8 Brisbane Lions Ollie Wines
9 Richmond Dayle Gartlett
10 Essendon Joe Daniher
11 Carlton Jackson Macrae
12 Greater Western Sydney Kristian Jaksch
13 Greater Western Sydney Troy Menzel
14 North Melbourne Ben Kennedy
15 Geelong Josh Simpson
16 Fremantle Tim Membrey
17 Collingwood Mason Shaw
18 Collingwood Sam Colquhoun
19 Adelaide Nick Vlaustin
20 Melbourne Taylor Garner
21 Western Bulldogs Nathan Wright
22 Sydney Swans Rory Atkins
23 Brisbane Lions (GC compensation - Michael Rischitelli) Matthew Haynes
24 St Kilda Tom Clurey
25 Gold Coast Jason Pongracic
26 Melbourne Todd Viney
27 Hawthorn Laine Wilkins
28 Port Adelaide Nathan Hrovat

Like any draft I would be expecting some good players to slide a bit. Who slides depends a lot on GWS selections. They have 5 selections before we do. Depending on how they see their list and their strategies they may let some good players that they have a lot of go. They have a massive amount of quality mids already so perhaps thats where we will pick up some quality (hopefully).

I would really like to be up just a little closer in the pecking order - would love the pick 13 (likely to be the Saints). I think a very good player could easily slip to 13 - like Dayle Garlett or Stringer. I think we really need a player like Garlett, he would add something instantly to our team.

Given Garlett is likely not to be there I would be more than happy to go with Simpson. This is probably too early for most, but I much prefer getting something we need rather than something that may not really help us much. I think Simpson is the next best thing. He is a bit more raw, but arguably has a better skill set in terms of pace, vision & skills. He has Lewis Jetta written all over him. Its true he doesn't find much ball yet, but that can be taught and he actually doesn't need to find much of it to impact. When you look at the stats of Rioli & Jetta after they have torn you apart they are lucky to get 20 a game.

By having 3 first rounders it does give Hine a chance to pick someone like Simpson early as well as fill up on some sliders. 18,19,21 is good but I would really love 13,18,19. We need the Dees to do a deal with the Saints to get us 13 for Dawes.

Don't forget Daisy wasn't a massive accumulator early but we all knew the possessions were quality. I think of this Simpson character in maybe the same vein. Build his posession rate up over time, but the quality looks very good to me.

all these posts off a 3 minute highlight video
simpson will be available at our picks, it is possible he will be there at 39, he struggles to get the footy at wafl colts level and thats a pretty ordinary level of footy.
classy no doubt but he's more a brad hill type...later in the draft 25-30+ for mine
menzel will be gone. top 10.
Garlett likely to be gone
Stringer a huge chance to be available. Might go 2nd round. Rated higher on the internet than in reality according to the people i've spoken to.

Agreed here Atkins is definitely one to look at. got a great kick on him, hard to tackle, superb side step and loves a goal. Would be a bargain at 18 or 39 completely tore apart the TAC cup this year. Fasolo 2.0 for me. I noticed Haynes is also rated highly who would you compare him to?

Not sure why it hasn't been mentioned more. That highlights package he kicks it to advantage on almost all occasions. Speed and agility to go with that. I recall he was mentioned as a possible 17 year old last year as a pick for the Crows. They opted for Brad Crouch instead.

He is only small, but I'd think he'd play alot next year in a small forward role with Krak.

if Ben Kennedy is available at 17 we better take him. Love that kid. Watched him a lot for Glenelg and im gonna get killed here but he has so much Cyril about him in regards to how he moves in packs and around goals.
