Sin City's 2012 Phantom Draft

Nice draft. If we get Garner at 22 I'll be very happy, I expect him to go around the 13-17 mark though. Not to keen on Gartlett at 6 would rather O'Rourke, Mayes, Grundy or Menzel.

Top effort. :thumbsu:
Garner could end up being a steal there :thumbsu:

I rated Garlett not only best available (by a clear margin over some of the guys you've mentioned) but also a great fit for the dogs with his excellent run and carry skills complimenting the strong inside midfield you're assembling.

It is general consensus the Suns will be looking for the best inside mid available at 13. Caddy replacement. Ample young defenders, forwards and outside players on the list already.

Great read mate, good to see you had a few NT boys up there. I rate Walla Tipungwuti really highly and wouldn't mind if we took a punt on him. Interesting to know your thoughts on Ben Rioli and Jarrod Stokes? And have you seen much of Damian Williams? He's been contacted by a few clubs so hopefully he comes in contention, if not the national draft, in the rookies.
Thanks JDC!, I'm a big fan of the NT talent and was happy to see them field a strong team this year. I sat down to watch the NT v SA game a while ago expecting to see Tipu, Anderson and Neade but the name Stokes just kept on coming up and every time he went near it he did something very nice. Very skillful and plucky player who I could see creating opportunities for himself if he got a run in the AFL. I think Ben Rioli is a good contributor, works hard and competes hard. Damien Williams has apparently played some very good football up there so I hope he gets a go somewhere.

4. Melbourne - Brodie Grundy
Took a lot for me to reach here over probably my favourite player from this year's draft in Wines but I felt Melbourne showed during the trade period they really wanted to boost their tall stocks and set themselves up there before developing their future midfield and with Jamar still going strong but getting on in years now is the perfect time to get a really good ruck prospect. Good physical player which Neeld will love, follows his own work up well and is a good forward. Their tall stocks are now complete, they can focus on midfielders from now on.

I rate Grundy highly and he looks like he's a star in the making but I hope we take a strong mid @ 4. Wines seems to be the general consensus if GWS doesn't pick him up which makes a lot of sense. I just think that we need more in the middle, adding to ready-to-go kids in Viney and Wines will help.

Great effort Sin :thumbsu:

Cheers Dh,

As you can tell I'm a huge Wines fan so he'd be a great pick, I just thought Grundy might complete your tall player stocks and as talls can take longer to develop that you can now focus on building the midfield up in the future.

I did consider Hrovat but in the end thirteen was just too high for he or Lonergan. The Suns midfield is still in very good shape and given how much higher most people rate O'Rourke than what I do I don't think they'd be complaining about picking him up here.

Is this based upon the fact that Melbourne might get their picks taken away? Because why would viney come to us?

Great effort

Not a great draft for us, if you have a look at our list, you will see that we are ok for mid, HBF and HFF
WHere er are lacking is KPP especially KPD. i think that if clurey made it to our first pick, we would snap him up in a second. As teddy and Lrt only have 2 maybe 3 years left in them, and would be a good transition giving him a couple of years to develop in the ressies. With our 2nd pick i think again KPP, hoopefully we might even look at the state leagues for these types of players, if not available in the ND (18-19 yr olds)

4. Lachlan Plowman
10. Sam Colquhoun
17. Troy Menzel
19. Jonathan O'Rourke
24. Jake Stringer

What do you see in Plowman and Colquhorn that most don't, and what don't you see in Menzel, O'Rourke and Stringer that most do? This isn't an attack on you, I'm just honestly curious to hear different thoughts on players given I know nothing. Who knows, you might be right!

Cheers Swanton,

Fair points and I do agree that the Swans will be looking to boost their future KPP stocks sometime soon however with their premiership window obviously wide open I went with a couple of players I could see having more immediate impact. It'll be interesting to see which way the Swans go, they also have an excellent record with trading and as we've seen this year it's an attractive place for players to go so they may be able to address this need at the trade table.

Plowman I see as the perfect AFL defender. Will be able to match up on and shut down a variety of opponents from KPF to medium players, is a great reader of the ball in the air for a mark or spoil and will be able to provide heaps of run and rebound. Can see him being a guy who can get 20 touches per game as well as completely shutting his opponent down.

Colquhoun just has wonderful disposal and decision making skills, reads the play really well as well as linking up so he gets a lot of the ball and always uses it to his teams advantage. I can see him being a very productive player in the AFL and probably his team's go to man.

In Menzel I see the elite talent that everyone else sees but the LARS is a huge concern, especially as Rodan and Malceski have had recurrences.

O'Rourke is a beautiful kick who's best is excellent but he goes missing far too often, doesn't get as much of the ball as other midfielders and doesn't win his own ball or get his hands dirty enough which he will need to do at AFL level. I mentioned in my phantom that he may struggle to find a position in the AFL.

Stringer had some good late games in the VFL but apart from that just hasn't shown anything to justify being a high first rounder. he's got some good attributes but nothing that makes him stand out from anyone else and unfortunately for him he doesn't have any great output to suggest he should go any higher than I have him.

Thanks. What do you think about quigley's criticism of Plowman, that he's too short to be a KPD, due to the fact that forwards are becoming taller?

Colquhorn is to me a prospect, I can't remember, but someone was bagging him, was it knighmare? Not sure, but he's probably one of the youngest kids in the draft yet he's highly rated. Impressive.

O'Rourke is interestingly, along with Grundy, Wines, Stringer, Simpson and others a player who has his fans and his critics.

Rankings, not draft selections.
Ah.

If we pass over O'Rourke, Stringer and Menzel for Nick Graham I will spew. Bryce Lewis should be sacked. I predict Graham will be closer to undrafted than a first rounder.

I think you are correct, the dogs would love a quick outside player to go with Wallis, Libber and plus you gave them Wines. If you think about how important Jetta or Hill are for Freo and Sydney then it is obviously the right choice.

As for Fremantle's pick, I haven't much of Kyle Martin or Marvin Warrell, but I would love anther KP player there.

It appears you don't rate White as highly as some, but if you edit your Phatom draft can we please have another Key Position player.

Good to see an original phantom draft here.
As for our selections they fit what I believe we need and a couple are ones I'd really love from what I've seen.

Nice attempt, though if Clurey was available at our pick I can't see us going past him. Pretty desperate for young KPD depth, probably our most pressing need.
