Wouldnt miss it for anything.

Tempted to wear a Power and Magpies scarf that night similar to what a Collingwood poster on here did in one of their finals.

wish it was the Collingwood game. ah well he will be remembered in that game aswell.

Just wanted you to know that I was in Las Vegas over the weekend and stopped by the area by the Flamingo where John met his untimely death. I said a prayer for him and for his family at the spot. May he rest in peace.

This won't be a popular view but this commemoration of McCarthy is now being overdone and becoming maudlin.
Keith Thomas acknowledged this was a potential problem on ABC radio (Radio 591) today, that there eventually has to be a point where everyone moves on. I personally think that was the London game where the win was dedicated to him, and his girlfriend was there. Carrying it on into 2013 we are now supposed to do 2-3 other activities to keep this going.

Every ounce of my being disagrees with you.

This is what separates a Club from a mere franchise.
Giving people in Adelaide a chance to remember him (as opposed to a meaningless game overseas) and setting up something to help others using his name is a great idea.
PAFC is built on tradition - retiring the number and making someone earn it is fantastic.

Your right.
It won't be popular, but lets not forget that the supporters have not had their chance, the London game was too far away for most of us to attend. Also there was always going to be something during the Collingwood game. It would of been better if the Collingwood game was Round Two, but that's the way the fixture falls.

Giving our members the chance to remember him at our first home game makes more sense than leaving it at a nothing match played 30,000km away in which 5 Port supporters would have attended.

We haven't even acknowledged his death in an AFL game though. Like surely you knew that would happen. Out of respect we have to honour the loss of our #35 before a Premiership game that is a given to me. Black arm bands for the first round at the least. Things of this nature. It is tragic we lost someone who would be out there Round 1 and that is when we should officially pay our respects to him. Unofficially he will be in our thoughts every day.

Great decision.
It has always irritated me a little that Colingwood seemed to pay him more respect as a past player than we have .
This of course could come from me living in Alice Springs and not seeing and hearing as much on TV and radio that you blokes would see in Adelaide.
Please don't take this any as disrespect to him as some of you may claim .Mainly due to me being a shit stirrer at times .

That is not true and as you say it is largely influenced by the media. Anything Eddie or Buckley says, gets put in the newspaper or on the news add that to the fact that they were playing finals at the time and could honour him during the game and took time out of their finals training schedule to attend his funeral, they were always going to get a fair amount of publicity for it.

Both clubs have handled a horrible situation respectfully and in a classy manner.

Keep in mind that most/all of these decisions would have been made in consultation with the family.

you are on your own with this one Powerstufff

Round 2 is fitting and a chance for our supporters to pay our respects, and for our boys to pay their respects in a proper game and not a mickey mouse game across the other side of the world

Im sure after this game, everyone will move on..

its not like we are having a tribute match every week

After watching the Premier League last night, I thought the fans' way of showing appreciation for a player was great - at the minute mark of the game that coincides with the players' number, there is a minute's applause from the crowd. In last night's game, Petrov (Aston Villa captain) is in remission from leukaemia, so both sets of fans applauded for the 19th minute as his number was 19.

Given JMac's #35, in the Round 2 game we fans could applaud for the entire 5th minute of the second quarter (allow 30 mins for first quarter). This could be OUR contribution to the game.

Just a thought.
