it's a fairly safe bet to say that M.Clarke will be the next aussie to play 100 tests (next summer during the ashes, all going well).

but who after that?

mr cricket is retiring after playing 79 consectitive tests after the age of 30 - great effort !

next on the list is johnson who is playing his 50th in sydney. this will take until early 2017 at best. he'd be 35 by then and the only quicks who have been playing test cricket at that age in recent times in lillee and mcgrath. also, if the rotation of the bowlers continues that will make it harder.

next on the list is haddin. i won't even entertain that idea.

next on the list is watson. he's 31 and with his ongoing injuries, i don't give him a chance.

next on the list is siddle. again, he is up against it and history says no.

no other current aussie has played more than 30 tests.

best bets for me are:
warner , aged 26 - 15 tests
wade, aged 25 - 9 tests
hughes, aged 24 - 20 tests
or someone yet to play test cricket

who's ya tip fella's ?

It's a rare fast bowler who gets anywhere near 100 caps. Wade doesn't feel like he will be around for a long time. I don't think Warner will really have much longevity - the batsmen who stick around tend to have techniques that hold up after their reflexes start to slow. On that basis I would probably say Hughes. He's young, has a bunch of Tests already, and looks like he's got a long career ahead of him.

I wouldn't be surprised if none of them did though. Even with the current number of matches, you pretty much have to be a mainstay in the side for a decade to get to 100 caps, and that is rare in an era when the team is not full of worldbeaters. From 1979 to 1988, only two debutants out of 50-odd would go on to play 100 tests - S. Waugh and D. Boon.

Hughes and Wade would have to be a good chance as well as Warner. Not really sure that Lyon will get there at this rate. And with the new rotation policy a fast bowler would have to be around for at least a decade injury free to have a chance.

Interesting that your basis for Warner not getting to 100 is technique(when his technique is quite good, it is his shot selection and temperament that is poor), however the guy you nominate has the worst technique of any specialist batsman to represent Australia in the last 25 years!!

Yeah well Warner gets a heap of s**t on here and everywhere else, the fact we're trying Hughes again indicates how ****ed we are imo. And they're going to put Baddin back in possibly? England must be laughing at us!

Pretty much this. Warner's dismissals are often down to poor discipline or stupidity (the slash outside off-stump v SA, the lob to the outfield v SL) rather than a technical error (Phil Hughes edge to third slip). He keeps his bat and pad together playing forward, gets in line with the shorter ones etc. One of the better techniques in the team, really.

Perhaps I didn't word my post very well. What I sort of broadly meant is that Warner plays a style that is very reliant on a good eye and reflexes.

I don't think Hughes' technique is that bad. It's very unorthodox, and has a couple of flaws that I am not sure he's corrected yet. But I think overall he plays in a manner that will not overly compromise his ability as his physical attributes decline.

Also, Hughes also had about half a decade's head start on Warner so all else being equal he theoretically doesn't need to play to anywhere near the same age to reach the milestone.

^^^This isn't very logical.

Warner is naturally very powerful and his good technique allows him to make the most of it. Even a cricketer lacking natural talent will become better with a good technique. The flaws with Hughes mean he can't capitalise on his natural talent to the same extent and is more susceptible to good bowling.

What I'm saying is that I think Hughes' game is the sort that he will be able to continue to play into his 30s. Warner's, not so much.

You know how Punter lost the ability to play the pull shot in the latter half of his career? That's what I see happening with most of Warner's game. Punter had great technique but that aspect of his game was really reliant on his physical abilities. So much of Warner's game is down to his strength and agility that (regardless of his technique) I feel it will go off the boil really quickly when he starts to lose the physical edge.

JMO. I guess we will see what happens.

Warner is also an eye player.

When his eye goes he won't last.

Just look at Sehwag recently.

Gilchrist was still slogging them well into his 30s. Don't see why Warner can't do the same.
Gilly didn't open in tests.

His career average also dropped by about 8 runs over the last 3-4 years of his career.

Jayasuria and sehwag to differ(although sehwag should've retired a while ago).
