Next aussie to play 100 tests (bar M.Clarke)

He's going to be a very good batsman IMO. He has a very good technique and has shown he has a very good cover drive and could possibly bat at 7 once Siddle has retired. He's going to be a genuine Allrounder

I wouldn't go that far, but he has all the tools to average about 30ish for mine.
and with so much competition for quick spots, his batting would give him an edge over other out swing bowlers like hilfy and bird, who aren't absolute bunnys, but aren't in patto's league.

He has the tools for 35+ IMO. Not sure on the short ball, haven't seen too much of it. He could be a very solid 7 for us

I agree he looks pretty good, but his test record has been inflated by a few declarations and not-outs. In 20 FC games he hasn't passed 50 once and averages 18. I know Imran Khan started slowly with the bat but I think we need to see Pattinson put on 70+ a few times before we start talking about 30-35 averages.

Bat at 7 once siddle has retired???? What are you on about?? If you have to bat behind Pete siddle you aren't even close to an all rounder. If you ignore this test which is an exception with 5 bowlers playing, siddle would normally bat at 9 behind Johnson, so I can't see siddle retiring giving pattinson an automatic right to the keepers spot. Are you saying he will bat above wade?

Pattinson is not even close to being an allrounder, that's crazy talk. He's got talent with the bat but he will never be more than a very useful contributor.

Good thing too. It's just too much pressure to ask a player to be both a spearhead bowler and middle order bat in modern cricket. Look at what it did to Flintoff.

I didn't say all rounder, I said he's capable of averaging around 30 batting at 8-9, which gives him an edge over guys like bird and hilfenhaus.

But he's definitely got potential with the bat, when he was recovering from injury he was batting at 3 for dandenong and playing as a specialist batsmen (made good runs too).

In normal circumstances I'd agree, but when you've got siddle, Johnson, starc, pattinson, cummins, hilfenhaus, bird and Hastings (and then uncapped guys like cutting, ncn, McDermott putland) all vying for 3 (possibly 2 at times) spots, then every little advantage can and should count.
Obviously form and conditions also come into it, but the fact that he can hold a bat and could be coming off runs helps his cause.

I think we could play 5 bowlers averagely regularly if we had say Starc, Johnson, Pattinson and Cummins all of whom can be 30 average players imo. But given our current batting line-up is shaky i think we can only afford to play the 4 bowlers.

No. There is no need to play 5 bowlers.

Not 5 speciallist bowlers. Never again. Lucky we were only played Sri Lanka. If it was against South Africa or England we would get slaughtered.

 it'd be nice if those bowlers could bat @ 30.
history says no as our best genuine bowler (not allrounder) in the recent 40 odd years has been reiffel with an ave of 26.
in that time only gillespie and johnson have made a test ton.
none of the above are a number 7 bat (not on a regular basis anyways - as a one off maybe), but are capable of being good number 8's.

Plausible that Johnson goes around for another three calendar years?

If not, then it'll be Warner I reckon.
