Looking for a list of VFL/AFL reserves Grand Finals between 1919-1999. It would hopefully include years, premiers, runner-ups, scores and venues. Any help would be great.

I know the AFL Record season guides do have a list of years, winners, runners-up and scores, but they don't list the venues.
I'm going to guess there is no way to get that information from the AFL Record online?

Wouldn't think so. I'd say the local library would probably have a copy of an AFL season guide though. Or if I was really bored I could type the whole lot out for ya. :p

If you don't mind, that would be great! I can't seem to find it anywhere online so if there were a record put on here I'm sure anyone else looking for the results in the future wouldn't have too much trouble finding this thread. If you do decide to do it, thanks in advance.

Ah, what the hell....
Thanks a heap. Valuable information that is quite hard to get a hold of. Would love to know the venues but I am very happy with what what has already been provided.

Kinda funny that the Brisbane Bears were the only team outside of Victoria to win a reserves premiership.

Kinda funny that the Brisbane Bears were the only team outside of Victoria to win a reserves premiership.

Probably a few reasons for that.

One was Rodney Eade as coach. All of his premiership experience at Hawthorn helped to guide the Brisbane kids that day.

Another was the squad Brisbane named. Because it was able to access the senior players, much like Fitzroy 2 years before hand, it was a fantastic team.

Look at this list:

Rod Lester-Smith (captain) - Hawthorn premiership player.
Peter Curran - Hawthorn premiership player.
Alex Ischenko - played for Brisbane and North
Shaun Hart - Brisbane triple premiership player and Norm Smith Medallist
Troy Clarke
Brad Rowe - also bobbed up at Collingwood and Fremantle
Robert Dickson - started at Hawthorn
David O'Keeffe - played many years at Geelong
Matthew Kennedy

The experience level was very good.

Kinda funny that the Brisbane Bears were the only team outside of Victoria to win a reserves premiership.

Sth Melb moved to Sydney in 1982 and Sydney had a team in the reserves comp up to the end in 1999, a total of 18 seasons. In 11 of those seasons they finished in double figure positions on the ladder including 5 wooden spoons. They made the finals from 1994 to 1998 with a best finish of second. The only other interstate team to field a Reserves side in the comp was the Brisbane Bears for 4 years from 1989 to 1992. The WA & SA teams had/have no need for a reserves teams as their players run around in the WAFL & SANFL when not required for senior duty, which also happens now for the Qld and NSW teams. So we 2 teams based interstate who competed for a total of 22 seasons, so the more remarkable thing is that they managed to win one.

!! Reserves and U19s Database Coming !!
I am currently in the process of putting together a database of results for all the Reserves and U19 games from 1919 to 1999 and also the VFL and the U18 TAC Cup matches through to the present.
I am about 90% complete with the Reserves scores and about 75% complete with the U19 scores
- need to tidy up some discrepancies and fill some gaps in the early years (trips to SLV required)
and I hope to have a web site up and running within the next couple of months (work & other commitments may delay this)

From 1919 to 1930 the Minor Premier, if it lost either the Semi Final or the Final, had the right to challenge the winner of the Final.
On 3 occasions, 1920, 1928 & 1930 a Grand Final (or Challenge Final) was not required.
In 1924 a round robin finals system was trialed where each of the four teams played the other three. Geelong as Minor Premier had the right to challenge Essendon who won the round robin series. The Reserves board decreed that the Final be played at Corio Oval and Essendon refused to play the game at that venue. As a side light to the Geelong Reserves at Corio Oval, in round 5, 2 June 1923 Geelong lost to Leopold Juniors (Sth Melb) 5.10-40 to 5-11-41. Up until round 6, 6 June 1931 when Geelong were again beaten by Sth Melb, 4.17-41 to 10.2-62, Geelong won 47 games in a row at Corio Oval including a “Champion Team” effort in 1930 when they went through the season undefeated

Up until 1940 it was quite regular for the reserves to play a Final on the Thursday, Show Day holiday in front of crowds in the region of 10,000 to 15,000. Depending on how the draw panned out, it could have been any of week 2, 3 or 4 of the finals

From 1919 to 1958 the Reserves grade (2nd 18’s) played their home & home games at the opposite venue to the Seniors, and usually played in front of quite good crowds (2,000 to 5,000 and on occasion up to 10,000)

In the period prior to the U19 grade (3rd 18’s) taking on the curtain raiser role in 1949 the curtain raiser at a lot of the Senior grade games was baseball. This lasted until the end of 1958 and from 1959 they played at the opposite venues when the Reserves took over the curtain raiser role. It wasn’t until 1952 when Collingwood finally joined the comp that they had a full list of the 12 traditional clubs.

I know this is a long shot but does anyone have a list of the VFA reserves Grand Finals?

Anyone know where I can find the Bears reserves results for 1991 when they won the premiership? I'm trying to compile a record for Rodney Eade (then Bears reserves coach) while coaching at Carrara.

What amazes you about this list is how many times the Under 19's weren't played on the same day or the same place as the Reserves and Seniors grand finals.

And look at some of the venues! Royal Park, Skinner Reserve and Bacchus Marsh?

Video now exists of the 1994 GF, team lists were...

FOOTS: Kellett, Smith, Nicholson, Corcoran, Satterley, Beveridge, Atkins, Del-Re, MacPherson, R.West, Allen, A.Darcy, Johnson, Lane, Hargraves, Sir, L.Darcy, Churchill, Whelan, Nichol, Suto

(Yes it's THAT Rohan Smith, THAT Brad Johnson, THAT Luke Darcy and THAT Luke Beveridge amongst others)

NORTH: Anderson, B.Sholl, John, Barnett, DeMamiel, Muir, Daniltchenko, Dwyer, German, Polak, M.Stevens, Simpson, Campbell, Capuano, Geister, Wynd, Hartin, Langley, Lochhead, Ruyg, Brebner

Not to mention THAT Brad Sholl, THAT Peter German, THAT Adam Simpson and THAT Matthew Capuano not to mention a cracker of a name in Zvonimir Suto.

What are the chances of compiling a list of SANFL and WAFL reserves grand finals in this thread as well? I'd be particularly interested given I'm a Port fan.

No wonder north Melbourne were so good in the late 90s they went to 9 under 19 grand finals in a row from mid 80s and 4 reserve grand finals in a row from the early 90s that list was always finals ready

These are the VFA reserves premiers as listed in "A History of the Victorian Football Association 1877-1995" by Marc Fiddian.
