We've moved him closer to defence the past 2 weeks IMO. He should play HFF, we need someone like him who can kick goals from 50.
Clueless. They think he's going to eventually figure himself out when he's not doing any better than when he was at HB.

That makes no sense to me and I read it 3 or 4 times.

All these calls for him to move to the backline yet the last couple weeks that's where he's mostly been playing already after we dropped Batchelor.

Newman is what he is now. He's the former captain and still respected within the group so no matter how he performs he won't get dropped. Same with Jackson it seems unfortunately so we have to carry these 2 throughout the year.

Personally would give Ellis that HB role and have Newman as the sub or depth.

Such a commentators comment, that one.

I'm not sure it really matters. When was the last time anyone outside Cotchin, Martin, Deledio, Tuck, Grigg and Houli got more than 25p's. You know? What sort of comment is that?

You're talking about an on and off-field leader of the club who does more than go out and get cheap kicks. If he gets 25 and goes around in a circle, is that good enough for you?

No mate its about work rate and effort and for me regardless of this 'leadership' he should be doing better than his current output. i deliberately said 25p's as that about right as i could have said 30/35 and the difference is if he has this 25 we know mostly he will use it wisely and add to the fact that nearly all the other players are very young and getting used to afl footy which newy cant hang his hat on.

Thats what i was referring to and nothing to do with what a 'commentator' says.

I WOULD suggest, with Morris almost certain to be rubbed out, Newman will go back to defence for a few weeks in his role.
I think we underestimate just how hard it must be for Newman. He's been a defender for 10 or so years and all of a sudden he is a forward or wing.
He'll have his good games and have his bad games as he learns his new role, just as any player with lesser experience would.

Geez there is some overreaction on here.
Newy had a poor day yesterday after being great the week before.
Lets be honest though he Wasnt alone yesterday.

But he's no good. Too old, not getting a ton of the ball or shutting down one the oppositions top 3 players.

Thanks for talking some common sense Rod. We're so good now we're carrying players apparently.

Nick Maxwell is a good ordinary player. But he educates Reid and Brown, and they will organize things when he's not there. Both yesterday, and for good. Our boys Tuck, Jackson and Newman, also perform this role. And they do it well. If there was a salary cap for solid citizens, they would be in this. I would hate the idea of these guys watching on, whilst Richmond play in a final. All Richmond supporters should.
I think this is what Mick meant when he said, it's not about wins and losses, it's about the process.
These guys are process kings.

Bit quieter on Sat, but was one of the few who didn't completely lose his head with the occasion. We'll drop him, come up against another hardened, experienced opponent, then complain about a lack of leaders out there.

Will have him in the team any day, not feeling this thread at all... o_O

Yep and without wanting to sound to disprespectful and knee jerky, process kings usually keep you in the pack that worry about the process, while those that have process kings that also double as match winners, tend to party alot at the pointy end of the season..

very hard not to sound disrespectful when discussing newy but i agree 100% with you

He needs to get more confidence. Perfect timing that Morris may possibly be suspended where Newman can return back to his old position.

only problem with that is morris is a lock down defender and newy has never been that

Probably just struggling to master the new role of playing up the ground. Has played in the backline for most of his career and is now trying to learn a new role.

Should get better with more time - maybe a stint at Coburg wouldn't hurt? Love him to bits and surely provides valuable onfield leadership but even being a former captain shouldn't give him a game unless he is performing on merit.
