Neeld sacked

Why the hell would they give the care takers job to Craig? He's been part of the losing solution.

Garry Lyon should step up and throw his hat into the ring if he really cares about Melbourne, Eddie was able to juggle TV and presidency.

Maybe the same reason Dermie has never steppd up to the plate when Hawks were down. Lyon would well and truly know what he can and can't do and knows he is not up to it but is probably too proud to say it. It is stupid to suggest that he doesn't care. Time to give him a break.

Those posters applauding the sacking of yet another coach at our club. Remember this. It is still the same s**t list of players.
You think we should have kept Neeld?

I don't see many applauding it? We know it's not simply Neeld's fault. He did probably need to go however.

Our list is not as bad as they're playing. They're just not. Add in experience to the youngsters, Hogan, a solid footy department and development program....we could be back sooner than expected.

This is the most f****d up game of snakes and ladders i've ever encountered! But then again this is the Melbourne Football Club!

Brilliant metaphor for how the club is travelling. It looks like we're moving up in the competition, then whoops! Back to being shithouse and time to rebuild a rebuild of a rebuild!

I would have liked him to have an opportunity with a full, healthy list. No distractions outside his control. But I guess thats not gonna happen now. And the MFC not so merry go round starts again!

Can someone just fill me as to what on field position Neeld played?

I know he was bound to go but in my view the reality also is that the list is not up to scratch. The coach always cops it but if it is his fault then there are a few boys on the Demons list who need to take a good hard look and perform much better from here on.

The nice part from Neeld's point of view is that he will be walking away with a decent pay-out in his pocket. (I might put my hand up for the job. Wouldn't last long but if I can arrange a decent contract, worth the vilification for the payout. :D )

Good news. There seems to be a bit more backbone to the changes being implemented this time around. Let's hope the correct coach is appointed this time - please not another untested assistant coach.

I have seen much worse MFC lists than this one. We are not that bad.
I agree. Our midfield lacks a mature gun or two but ignoring some of the players we brought in like Rodan we have good forwards and defenders and finally some decent young mids in the wing. We seriously need to look at our ruck situation as well but all in all our list is workable.

Neeld intimating (the other day) that we are where we are due to our rebuild approach was the first sign to me he was making excuses as a man under the pump. Even rebuilding teams have goals and benchmarks.

Too many players who were improving have gone wayward under Neeld. McKenzie a prime example.

No such thing as an untalented AFL list
Your midfield has some real quality just needs some time & good guidance & you have enough blokes to come up with a solid defence.
I think you need a hard task master as a coach, I'm not sure Williams is a good choice but then maybe I'm just soured by his last couple of years at port so he may have his zest back.

Please tell me you aren't one of the North flogs asking for Bon to be sacked?

This has been recognized by our supporters for a long time. Nothing new.

He's actually doing things though. Change is actually happening. While obviously we have to wait and see for improvement the ambition and workrate of the man is enough to be happy.

Change happened under Neeld: we bought in an almost completely new coaching panel, one of the most highly respected assistant coaches in the game, we poached a highly regarded fitness guru and an experienced and well regarded director of coaching, we increased our footy department spending and told the guys who messed it up previously to get their heads the hell out of there.

Change in and of itself doesn't fix things. It took about 6 months for Neeld to lose his messiah status, I wonder how long before people realise that PJ isn't the answer to all our problems? I'm not saying he's a hack who will ruin the already smouldering ruins of this club, but haven't we learned by now that deciding a guy is the chosen one just because he's new is a bad idea?

That is true. If we can start developing i) the following players to the A-grade:
- Trengove
- Grimes
- Toumpas
- Viney
- Frawley
- Hogan
- Watts?

ii) B+ solid contributors who regularly get on the park:
- Blease
- Dawes
- Clark
- Gawn

then we have a chance of turning around.

If i were u guys i would be concerned at some of the things said at that press conference. Things like we are an impediment to the AFL, we are an impediment to other clubs when they play us as home games, we are an impediment to broadcasters.

I would say that THIS "rebuild" period, better work or u guys a going to be hurting.

I hope it does especially for the fans.

When it comes to the issue of Neeld's sacking I can only think of one old saying:

Damned if you, Damned if you don't :(
Agree. That is how I feel about the whole thing. He’s not a great coach, but is getting rid of him going to change anything? His keeping him worse for the club. There is no clear answer for any of this, it’s a lose/lose situation for everyone involved with club.
At the end of the day... as long as we bleed red and blue and keeping going to games and help our club push forward in whatever way we can, that’s what matters.

This is why we needed an outsider like Jackson who could see how terminal things were looking.

Our former CEO was in la la land aka Schwabworld and our board have been out of touch as well.

They were very full on words.

We have brung the game into disrepute with our performances. Our percentage is under 50. One of the problems with Neeld was he bleated about the 'other' measures of improvement and neglected the scoreboard. We would have folded as a club if he stayed on next year and he still would have been bleating on about his disregard for scoreboard pressure even though only 5 supporters were turning up each week - simply to hoist the banner.

We're a car crash on field. He had to go. At least this time the coach takes the rotten fish-head with him ie CEO and President.

I must say I appreciate the fact McLardy dug into his own pockets though. Of the three he leaves with not much to show. The others have a few dollars to ease the pain.

Well it's finally happened. All I can say is they better get the right guy this time. I'm at the stage where I jus don't care anymore and that's scary to me.

I hear Rattern is the favorite for the role.. but that maybe a long time coming ..

The CEO speaks well and he fills me with some confidence which is great considering the last two years I have been void off.

Lets hope with him in charge we get the right people in place and it filters on to the players. I hope the players also have a good hard look at themselves as well. Most of them will be on their 3rd coach now...

It can't be the coach all of the time.

It's a real shame Neeld had to go, I really felt like had he been given more time and a decent run with injuries, he could've turned it around with your draw and going into next year. There was never a four quarter performance, but there were signs that Melbourne could really play and take it to the top teams at times. Would be happy to have him back at Collingwood to replace one of our assistant coaches.

I'm also not sure what sacking him mid-year achieves as you guys will be in a holding pattern for the rest of the year.

But oh well, his position was ultimately untenable and what's done is done. Good luck to the next coach at the Demons. He's going to need it.

Any thoughts on whether Craig might make changes in regards his assistants, i.e. turf out one or two? Not talking about anyone in particular... *makes frantic head gestures towards Choco Royal trying to hide behind the Gatoraid cooler in the corner*
