Guys,

It is my opinion that a bloke like Neeld would be good for our club as an assistant to CS, now before you all scream and say but he was the coach of Melbourne and they were rubbish...hear me out.

What he did for Collingwood under Malthouse before he went to Melbourne was great for them he brought there defensive pressure and press and the players and coaching staff loved him, He was always was on a hiding to nothing at Melbourne because the players refused to play his way, see Moloney as an example, but he never stood for any crap and I beleive that we could do worse than hire him maybe just to coach with knights in the VFL with the youngsters, now all of you will agree but it's just an opinion

Do we need an assistant?
If so what role is it we need replacing?
Both of those questions need to be answered before I can comment either way, eg if we do need a new assistant and its in the academy/rookie development then there are plenty better even within our club, Matty Knights for one.

Replace whoever is handling our clearance work?:D

You'd maybe grab Neelds if we lost an assistant and we decided we like what he offers. Some say he was a bigger loss to Collingwood than Malthouse.

I don't see Ayres coming back to AFL but many are looking back at Knights in retrospect with respect. I don't think Neeld is a great developer of youth just based on Melbourne.

Edit: why not Ayres, his style of coaching and player management is great for the 90s. I don't think it works today. Knights really should be given another go.

Don't want him!
He's proven to be a disaster when left to work on his own and the Geelong hierarchy already have better people in charge of things currently.

Knights, Amos, Hood just to name a few have been in our system and produced results so Neeld would be of no use.

I'm sure he'll be an asset somewhere and I'm sure he'll get a job somewhere, but I just don't see a pressing need for Neeld to come in. And the other thing of course is that it's very hard to know which of our assistant coaches are doing a good job and which need to improve. Does anyone here know if Shane O'Bree is a great midfield coach? Because I wouldn't have a clue.

Judging by our clearance numbers that is a bit fat NO

I thought we only took on Brisbane premiership players as assistant coaches?

We've only got one - Carrotseller
O'Bree wasn't a premiership player and Lappin isn't an official assistant anymore.

Aren't the Bulldogs starting their own VFL team next year ?
I wonder if Neeld could get that gig, with him being friends with McDudney

But is that due to the cattle, or the coaching? Sure, we were great in there, once upon a time...but that was when we had about 4-5 AA-calibre midfielders in there every year (any combination you like of Ablett, Selwood, Bartel, Corey, Chapman, Kelly) and the premier tagger in the game to stop the opposition getting clearances. Why would Neeld do any better?

Mark Neeld need not come anywhere near our great club. He is a dickhead of the highest order as a bloke and we dont need his type down here. I would be truley shattered if he was a coach of any sort down here. Speaking from personal experience of the man.

Knights really should be given another go.
I wouldn't be surprised if Knights and Neeld effectively swapped positions.

Neeld has long wanted to coach at Geelong and has been knocked back in the past for both senior and assistant roles. However I believe his family are in Ocean Grove and I know he was commuting from there whilst assistant at Collingwood.

Not sure Mark's man management skills are all that flash. Something needed when in a number one coaching role particularly at a professional level. Reckon he'll pop-up somewhere in an assistant role. My tip is Carlton cos Malthouse rates him.

I too would like to see Knights get another crack at a head coaching job. However, I don't think Melbourne can take the risk on a coach without a record of success. That's why I reckon they'll go hell for leather for Roos with Choko in play too.

There is a view that Knights is a good development coach. However there are doubts about him as a head coach.

For those interested I believe Neeld is on Footy Classified tonight.

Steve Hocking's name as the Dees number one target as Football Director has been floating around in the rumour mill today. Think they'd be wasting their time should there be something in it.

No thanks.

I don't doubt he was well credentialed and made an impact at Collingwood, BUT, he's damaged goods now.

The problem is he could be the exact same coach as he was during a successful tenure at the Pies but he would come to us with a reputation having been one of the least inspiring coaches of all time with one of the worst records of all time. Whether he's to blame for that or not, that will be how he is his perceived, rightfully or wrongfully, and the messages he once used to deliver will no longer be received the way they once were.

Not really surprised, but I would hate to lose Hocking, has been as important as Balme although without the kudos. It was Hocking who knocked back Dank. If he were to go though, I would expect to see Buddha back at the cattery.
