Can someone give me an answer to this question. Did a Tom or Vince O'brien play from NM prior to NM entering the league ( and if he did play , it was probably anywhere from 1907 to 1913.
Just bumping up this post. Can anyone help me.

The only O'Brien I've come across near this era who played for North was an M. O'Brien who played in 1903. it appears he was banned for life after the 1903 Grand final. The ban was lifted in 1913.

What for?

The report on the Grand Final mentions that the match was very rough with many fights, one of the worst offenders being O'Brien. I would assume that this earned him a life ban.

At least he had his premiership to look back on.

I'll tell you why I am interested in this name. I've been trying to do some research on North Melbourne footballers who died in World War 1 ( for ANZAC Day purposes). I haven't looked through the thread but Wikipedia lists one, an ex Collingwood player. Historically references to men who gave their lives were pretty much anamed d hoc and there were few lists created at the time. It was just never thought of on most occasions.

Having said that someone else might have got the names.

But looking through the Argus online I came across a reference to the Argus of 22 June 1915 to a Private T. V. O'Brien ( which at the War Memorial lists the person as Timothy Vincent O'Brien) who died at 20 years of age from recollection at Gallipoli.

What separates out Timothy Vincent from the many other brave men who died at Gallipoli , is that the Argus states that Timothy Vincent "was known in junior football circles in North Melbourne and was a swimmer of note".

Usually this means the bloke played footy at some reasonably high level.

Probably been done before but with ANZAC Day coming on let's remember a NM player who was a World War 1 hero.

His name is Albert Woodington.

He played pre World War 1 and returned to play for NMFC.

Albert won the Miltiary Medal in 1918 and here is how his citation read:

"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the night 17/18 1918, when during a heavy hostile gas and high explosive bombardment of the battery near Norfolk Bridge on Ypres Comine Canal, north east of St Eloi, a gun pit was ignited by an enemy shell and severe damage to equipment was threatened. Under great difficulty 3 gunners, extinguished the burning pit, with the result that the gun was only temporarily out of actionand the loss of ammunition minimised".

That is guts.

Albert was a backman who left Australia at age 23. He was a fitter by trade. He returned to Australia in 1918.

To give you an idea of what Albert went through, he is a picture from the Somme of a guncrew in action.

You can add the high explosive and gas bombardment.

ANZAC Day is not just about Collingwood and Essendon........

Sound like a nasty brick... the opponents possibily had GLASS jaws too.. :p

Was there a Murphy in the team back then?

There was an interview during the week with a timekeeper for Geelong (50 odd years doing this job) So there were 2 things that he brought up during that chat that involved Nth. Geelong actually donated the entire gate takings of a game between the 2 clubs once when we were struggling to raise funds, and some years later when Geelong requested to join the VFL we had the deciding vote in which we reciprocated.
Geelong also had its club theme song exactly to our current day song, with the geelong overtures....must admit it did sound weird hearing it after listening to ours for most part of my life.
Thought Id share this , as Geelong has been in the past more cordial than say...*Essendon
