List Mgmt. 2013 List Management Resource Thread

Season is over as far as finals are concerned, and I expect any more retirements to start trickling out soon, so here's the thread for the third year running, go to source for all changes to the playing list over the break.

Nobody goes on the list until there's at least an official club statement, or the name is read out at the draft. Plenty of space for rumours, bargains and lies in the Trading & Free Agency and Draft... are we even bothering with a Draft thread this year? megathreads.

It takes me a while to get the draft order right with all the compensation picks thrown around, AFL is still a month away at least from putting out the draft orders and timetables.

By happy coincidence my failure to remove us from the first two rounds (17+17 instead of 18+18) worked nicely into my not knowing the two compensation picks had been activated.

This year I also included the Football Department Staff in the list, because I dreamed a dream we took a broom to some of the assistant coaches.

Yep, you've done well. Hope you didn't take it as me being critical; just trying to help.

is Mitch Grigg signed up yet

That's great. :thumbsu:

It's also quite interesting. Laird is currently a Rookie - so when did this happen, and what is he being contracted as? I hope it means that AFC have officially (lovely word that, today :D) put in the paperwork to say he will be upgraded to the Primary list come draft day.
But AFC can't yet, 'cos we haven't delisted anyone yet, and with Johncock off, and Betts on our list is currently maxed, we can't add anyone.
Who cares - after Tippetgate I have no doubt the paperwork and AFL Player rules compliance will be scrupulous. One way or another Laird is on board.
Hartigan next?

That happened the Tuesday he received his nomination back in August, and presumably "2 year contract extension" for Laird meant he was offered a 2 year senior list contract starting next season, essentially agreed terms and guaranteed elevation during the National Draft, because he would have been able to leave in the same way we snatched up Jenkins if we had held off too long.

As for a list spot - he doesn't get elevated until our final selection of the National Draft, which is well after the list lodgment that will contain all of our delistees and other departures.

How many picks will we have in the rookie draft? We need to replace Orval and McIntyre. From what I understand Klaosen doesn't count. Laird is almost definitely upgraded... So is that 3 picks and 4 if Hartigan gets upgraded as well?

If we only have 39 on the main list too (so after the PSD), then we can have a 5th rookie (from my understanding)

What's the benefit of doing that? Does it mean we can upgrade a rookie immediately without a LTI?

I think there's TPP reasons to do it (generally)

Not sure about rookie promotion, but quite possible.

Anyone else concerned that we have gone through the Trade/Free Agent/National Draft periods and failed to address our lists 2 biggest weaknesses (Lack of an outside, pacy midfielder and a 2nd ruckman)?

No, because that will not fix an immediate need anyway. Knight is supposed to be good on the outside anyway. And we still have the rookie draft to come to address future needs. O'Brian is pacey if we happen to land him.

Our luck of a 2nd ruckman isn't an immediate need? I would say its the biggest immediate need we have. Especially since our senior list only has 2 players over 200cm on it.

2nd Ruckman is definitely one of our biggest needs. I'm not convinced that an outside, pacy midfielder falls into the same category.

We have a dire shortage of young tall players of all descriptions - rucks, defenders and forwards. Siggins is the only tall drafted in the ND since 2009 - and there is no certainty at all that he will make it. For the most part our drafting since 2009 has been midget city. We've drafted a few talls in the RD in that time (Dowdell, Osborne, ...) but Hartigan is the only one who has been good enough to earn an AFL debut.

The recruitment of Betts has gone a long way towards resolving our need for a small, crumbing forward - but we really need to be thinking about drafting his replacement right now, given that he's 27 (Happy Birthday, Eddie!) and probably won't be around for more than 3-4 years.

Of course it is but you are reading it wrong. A raw recruit ruck man from the ND would struggle to get a game in '14. Even if we got one we still have a pressing need for the next 2 years. Getting a new recruit will NOT address our immediate need. We will need to trade for one next year. We'll also have to hope Jenkins and Sauce stay reasonably fit all year.

Not reading it wrongly at all. We had a chance through three different types of acquisition periods to address our biggest needs and we didn't. I am not saying we should have drafted a ruckman as i realise they take time (although I would have been very happy with 20 year old 205cm/105kilo Rory Lobb).

What I am worried about is that if Sam Jacobs doesn't play for 10+ games (for whatever reason) it hurts us because not only will we have to play a s**t ruckman in Graham - but we won't get those 10 precious games into a developing ruckman - thus wasting them.
