I don't understand this...

Our current key forward situation consists of:

- Hawkins (Bulged Disc in his back)
- Vardy (Has had hip/groin issues)
- Walker (Can't kick)
- Kersten (Untried commodity, undersize for a KPF IMO)

Why the hell would you not give Pods another year? If these guys all happen to get injured we will be back to the days of using Stokes as a lead up forward and this forum will go into ******* melt down.

Anyone who thinks Taylor is the answer to our forward problems has rocks in their head. He is a 2-time AA KEY DEFENDER!

There seems to be a lot of angst in here, based on nothing more than conjecture.

I stand to be corrected, but AFAIK, there has been no CONFIRMED decisions by the club about what the future holds for Pods or Chappy.

There may be good circumstantial reasons to believe they're gone, but I'm thinking we should temper our commentary until such time we have definitive answers.

We won 8 from 10 against top eight teams this year, I call that critical, but obviously you are framing the argument.
So you think we shouldn't gift (your words) games to players (Varcoe etc) but it's OK to gift them according to age (young).

No difference I would have thought.

Oh by the way I understand that at some point you need to transition players and I think we have done this amazingly well ( my eg. In earlier posts ) which you conveniently ignore on the basis it doesn't fit your paradigm.

Again my faith lies in the MC as history will support.

Of course home and away form, especially against the top 8 sides is absolutely critical. But so are finals. You can't choose one and not the other. When it mattered most - in the finals - some of our senior guys were exposed. Can't hide from that.

And I do think we have transitioned some players very well. The point is they need to accelerate that process.

Prior to Geelong picking him up, the last time he was on an AFL list was 2001. The fact that he had to wait another eight years before being drafted again is a great story. He perservered and no team was willing to draft him. He did train with the Bulldogs and Richmond but they both passed on him. Notice since Geelong drafted Podsiadly in 2009, it has opened the door for more clubs to take a punt of mature aged recruits. When you look back on this someday, it was a huge success that Geelong drafted Podsiadly. The Cats took the risk and it payed off big time.

The bolded part was a real sliding doors moment. When Pods was training with Richmond, they were trying out two players for the one spot on the list, and Pods was the one to bomb out.

Who was the other player I hear you ask. One Kent Kingsley. That really worked out well for Richmond, didn't it?

We're in a really tough situation with our list squeeze. There just aren't enough players who deserve to be cut so that we can have a real crack at the draft. There's also a whole bunch of youngsters who must be given game time or they'll walk.

Next year has to be about getting massive game time in to younger players. Hopefully players like Guthrie, Murdoch, Smedts, Blicavs, Vardy, Simpson, Brown, T Hunt, Horlin-Smith, Caddy and Stringer have played enough games now that they can take on more senior roles and we can still win games with most of them playing at once.

I'd hope that next year we basically play these guys every week. If we've still got enough quality up top to win enough games to push for top 4 then we look at building to our absolute best side coming up to finals and give it a real shake. Chappy and Pods would be great for this but I don't think we've got the list space to carry 2 guys who we want to basically be finals specialists. I'd say we keep Chappy for that role and give him 10 games at most during the regular season but say thanks for the service to Pods and if he wants to play on we'll facilitate a trade wherever he wants to go. It's harsh but much better than leaving quality youngsters on the sidelines to either be cut since we don't have the list space or to walk out since they're not given opportunities.

I'm all for a healthy, robust debate of thoughts and opinions as long as it remains respectful.

The speed with which some 'discussions' lose that respect and posters turn on each other, and the club, troubles me.

We've been fortunate to witness a magnificent era in the history of the GFC, but it's sometimes taken for granted and denigrated by the tone of the conversations in here.

I didn't choose one and not the other, need to read again the above.
Oh and in finals some vets played well and some poorly, in some games. Paradoxically some younger players played well, some played poorly in some games.

Our team which you suggest failed (ultimately 17 did) did so by a small margin despite all the ongoing issues, some real (injuries) some imagined.

You suggest we aren't transitioning some players despite the GFC yet to announce all changes.

That's exactly it. They have to manage their list based on what the players might do in the future, not because of what some players have done in the past.

We might be jumping the gun a bit? Pods was in our best against Freo, Chappy easily our best against Port - now they're both potentially out the door. Its a tough one, and we do need to continue to develop our younger players, but we are still a shot a flag next year right.

We need a phased easing out of our Champions , not a wholesale exodus
Delist Hunt and Corey , put Pods and Chappy on deals with the undersatanding they will play some VFL and mentor their replacements.

And FFS get a kicking coach for Walker , I do not want to live through another Peter Johnston or Gareth Andrews again - the heart just won't take it

Tell me exactly what his condition is and what they should of done.

Sometimes things are out of your control.

Now if you reckon we should have played someone else instead of the Hawk than that is something entirely different and has merit.

Until we know the full story on Tommy it's impossible to say whether anything more could of been done to get him right.

Maybe we could give Brown a go in the forward half. Not just for one game but a few. He was recruited as a forward. Played nearly all his senior football as a forward. Has been successful at VFL level as a forward..........

Remember as a kid being down at the Junction Oval watching the Cats play Fitzroy. Johnston must have taken 15 marks (many contested) that day and proceeded to spray his shots like a drunk. He had wonderful hands but a bloody lousy leg!
