So this guy got 10 years for hacking a private surveillance firm, an act which ended up with $700,000 worth of fraudulent donations being made to NFP charity groups. Ten years. The judge on the case is married to a victim of the hacking, which apparently is not a conflict of interest. Read into Hammond's biography and you will see that this guy is genuinely out to make the world a better place, not just some clown behind a keyboard. Ten years?

It won't be long before Ross Ulbricht gets given a long stint in the big house. And then more will follow. Imprisoned like Manning, cooped up in embassies like Assange, or hunted down by the Feds like Snowden.

Are these guys heroes? Are some, but not others; have I mistakenly grouped them together? Are you glad there are people out there like them? Would you support their actions if only you knew how? And where do you see 'internet activism', 'hacktivism', 'digital liberation' etc going over the next few years and beyond?

Over to you, bigfooty.

I don't know the in's and out's of this particular but it seems very hard to justify a 10 year sentence. Clearly US Government sending a message.

Not his first offence. He served two years for a similar offence in 2006. Next time the dumb* will get 20.

As for making the world a better place, please explain how stealing credit card numbers and fraudulently donating the proceeds makes the world a better place.

Stratfor seems like a fairly undesirable company to have been donating/subscribing to in the first place...

Fair game...

Was that the prick that hacked the site and published our email addresses and passwords?

**** him. That was rude. Quite a shock to see my details online.

Hope they apply high voltage to his genitals, unless he likes that kind of thing.

Hammond and several other hackers were arrested based on information from another prominent member of Anonymous, Hector Xavier Monsegur, whom the FBI had turned into a government informant.
It was Monsegur, known within Anonymous by his pseudonym, Sabu, who encouraged Hammond to break into Stratfor's servers.

For a crime fighting organization the FBI are good at encouraging crimes.

I wonder if some of the info this whistleblower accessed is whats published by Wikileaks?
The material contains privileged information about the US government’s attacks against Julian Assange and WikiLeaks and Stratfor’s own attempts to subvert WikiLeaks. There are more than 4,000 emails mentioning WikiLeaks or Julian Assange. The emails also expose the revolving door that operates in private intelligence companies in the United States. Government and diplomatic sources from around the world give Stratfor advance knowledge of global politics and events in exchange for money. The Global Intelligence Files exposes how Stratfor has recruited a global network of informants who are paid via Swiss banks accounts and pre-paid credit cards. Stratfor has a mix of covert and overt informants, which includes government employees, embassy staff and journalists around the world.
The material shows how a private intelligence agency works, and how they target individuals for their corporate and government clients. For example, Stratfor monitored and analysed the online activities of Bhopal activists, including the "Yes Men", for the US chemical giant Dow Chemical. The activists seek redress for the 1984 Dow Chemical/Union Carbide gas disaster in Bhopal, India. The disaster led to thousands of deaths, injuries in more than half a million people, and lasting environmental damage.

The credit card stuff was no good, but the Stratfor email leak was commendable. There are a lot of very bad guys in the private intelligence game because it gives governments plausible deniability. They get paid big cash from the taxpayers purse, to take heat for law breaking.

I don't know the in's and out's of this particular but it seems very hard to justify a 10 year sentence. Clearly US Government sending a message.

I look at it in a different way. I suppose there is always good things whistle blowers do . And sometimes they change things for the good. I'm not going into which and what except for this Indonesain spying business.
Correct me if I'm wrong , but didn't this little bit of crap come out of the Snowden fellows information he had managed to get hold of and float around the place.
We spyed on Yudiyono??? Well what a bloody huge surprise!!!????
Wait until more stolen secret information comes out and maybe we'll hear how Indonesia spys on us.
WELL OF COURSE THEY DO.
Point is it was information that is known at certain levels and done by everyone except the plebians are never told .
And when they are, wow all these elitist wealthy people who make it to the top in a third world country get so embarrassed and lose face. SBY is probably a good bloke, and his culture has left him in a awkward situation, its unfortunate if Mr Snowdens spying has stuffed up our relationship with a place with so many people that we are supposed to be frightened of them? Yet do many people think the Javanese are loved by Balinese and East Timorese and West Papuans and all the other different peoples that make up this place.

So the international politics go into bullshit mode, and some half witted immature fellow decides to lock Corby up for extra time , what kind of children are these people.

So my point is this, we all spy, and all governments know we spy. But because it comes out into the open these so called politicians have to make a stink because they look weak or because they are having an election.

I'd remind Mr President that he would be worth while thinking about Australians with open pockets and aid galore especially when things like tsunamis etc happen.

But no, we get a deadline to explain, 2 days or what!? If Abbott , who is not my favourite person, needs to apoligise then probably every bloody leader of every nation needs to apoligise to each other .
This is how serious leaking this s**t becomes , but its more than serious , its just ridiculous , but no we'll have this s**t fight and heaven knows where it'll go.

But something else , if something was found out, during this spying, it might help us , but it might help the bloody Indonesians as well. We seem to keep helping them , don't we?

Snowden whats the lowdown on Indonesias spy network?? You should even the balance .
