I always had a soft spot for Brady Grey. He's got a little bit of the Ballantyne's to him, although more of a midfielder/forward as opposed to forward/midfielder. Just seems to have that knack of making things happen.

Alex Pearce was a good pick too. Give him a couple of years, and he could really surprise. Was a lot of talk about him going earlier than many (basically BigFooty) expected.

I hope I'm not the first to say  freo. Do we not rate the locals. Marsh is there and we take Grey. I thought Marsh played as a mid most of his life. He is going to be a champ for Collingwood. :(

Collingwood killed it and GWS killed us.
I have some small satisfaction from saying that we needed an earlier pick if we wanted McCarthy and also saying we would take 2 KPF's in the draft.

Ahead of Marsh even? I thought you rated Marsh quite highly, I'd be interested on your thoughts in our non-selection of him?

Happy with the selections.

Don´t understand the Marsh love. He didn´t really do much all year apart from blitz a 20m sprint. Kicking suspect.

Seems we love the big forwards with big tanks. Taberner has elite endurance. Now we have Apeness (very good time for 3km) and Pearce (also an elite time in the 3km). Perhaps that was Marsh´s downfall, speed but blows up quickly.

Brady is our new Lachie Neale.

Teams spend so much money and effort with altitude training camps, altitude rooms etc to get their players that bit of extra endurance. It seems we go for players who have the genetic makeup to get an edge over others in this area.

McCarthy will be back in two years for a packet of chips, frustrated from lack of opportunity at GWS. I would think GWS will use him as a backman.

Grey looks a natural footy player - and yep, moves like Peter Bell Lach .

Pearce could be anything - very raw and obviously a project type, which is fine given we have so many in front of him who are ready made FWD replacements ( Gumby, Griff, Tabs and Apeness )

As for the big Apeness, looks ready to roll next year if need be but I doubt he'll be on the park in 2014 given those few in front of him

I feel a little indifferent on the draftees only because they weren't anything I had even considered Freo taking - apeness aside, it would seem that the recruiters got the guys they were after though as there was little chatter about the Grey and Pearce from other clubs.

My only disappointment was that we didn't grab Cam Giles with our second pick, could have run on next year and be a great MJ or lukey Mac replacement if required and with the long term in mind.......I'll be watching him with interest at Carlton who desperately need him and likely to use him in 2014. I guess in tanner smith we trust given he's our only real KPD back-up !

BigFooty servers suck! I'll offer some more thoughts in the next day or so.

But, I do like what we did - even if I did rate others higher. In Apeness we have a strong contested mark (elite for his age) and a real presence up forward (not just a body, like say a resting ruckman). That's where he differs from Taberner and Gumbleton. And he is a key forward first and foremost, not a ruckman. Had he played at full forward and not in the ruck at the Championships, then I probably would have rated him much higher - as I did earlier in the season. But that's what happens when you're bigger than everyone else on the ground, you're forced to go into the middle.

Whereas had we got McCarthy instead, then we wouldn't really have been any better off for next year. And in the end, we got that athletic project tall in Pearce anyway. I'm sure this was Plan B (no denying that), but Apeness wouldn't have been available at our second pick and nobody else picked up is truly physically ready like him.

As for Marsh, my rating may have been slightly misleading as to his draft position. It was always going to be pick 30+ at the earliest, although I did think he'd get a shot earlier than what he did in the end. The other thing, is that he is just as much of a project as Pearce - only with even more question marks over him. I do think he'll be a good player, but I'm not too bothered in selecting Grey over him considering our first two picks.
