I'm more worried that Rich, Polec and Karnezis are out of contract. I'm not worried that Merrett and Patful are out of contract because they ain't going anywhere

As much as I like all three, Rich is the only one I couldn't stand to live without as a Lion and I don't see it happening. I started a thread about three of our top youngsters potentially leaving a year or two ago, one left but it all worked out well in the end and we seem to be heading towards a positive future. Best not to worry too much, especially before the next season has started.

Why live in a constant state of concern?
I'm not I just saw three very good players are out of contract and expressed I'm worried they could leave. I haven't thought about it since that comment.

My levels of confidence that they'll stay..

Rich 99.5%
Polec 90%
Karnezis 65%

As a side note, for years I would get myself absolutely tied up in knots fearing players would leave. Eventually you learn to just relax about it for your own sanity. The overwhelming majority of the time, required players are retained.

Go-home rumours are almost always fake... prepare yourself for West Coast supporters/Crows Supporters insisting all year long that Rich and Polec respectively want out. Ignore them.

I'm quite confident that Rich will stay, and I'd be surprised if Polec left, but with Karnezis I think it's 50/50 it depends on his game time IMO.

Hopefully we will have the $$$ in the cap next year to do the job on Rich & Polec in particular.

I reckon we could pay Rocky peanuts and he'd stay. He is an absolute legend!

Any chance of an update to the original post?

It's not a public service for opposition supporters.

Mayes isn't going anywhere by the way, and neither is Aish I suspect ;)

While I can understand your hostility to an opposition supporter posting in your contracts thread, I come for different reasons. I was compiling a list of all the free agents for 2014 here and I'd like to finish off the Brisbane list.

Actually, I'm curious about that as well. McGrath is the only one I can think of off the top of my head, apart from Brown.

The players that have been at our club for 8+ years come the end of 2014 are Brown, Merrett, McGrath, Patfull, Adcock and Leuenberger.

Brown, McGrath - 2013
Adcock, Leuenberger, Patfull - 2015
Merrett - 2016

So the only free agents we'll have are Brown and McGrath :)

Good stuff mate. From that information it seems to be Polkinghorne and Leuenberger are the ones from the 2015 free agents that you'd want to make a priority in re-signing.

They can take Polkinghorne, if get to keep Leuenberger :p

If only it were that simple. You think Brisbane might be in for a free agent in 2014? I imagine they would have some decent money in the cap after the players that departed this year. There are some decent names there with the likes of Boak, Gibbs, Murphy, B.Reid and Frawley up for grabs. What type of player would Brisbane be after anyway?

I have a strange feeling we signed Martin to a three year deal. I feel like I read an article on it and almost choked on my corn flakes. but surely we wouldn't have done that for a player we only gave up pick 53 for.

lots of 2014 there but I suppose you'd expect about 1/3-1/2 of your list to be coming off contract each year.

there isn't anyone in the 2014 list who I'd expect to want to leave. and most of the ones that are on the fringes of the team and might be thinking about leaving I wouldn't be fussed about losing (eg. Raines, Polkinghorne, Bewick, Maguire, Weardon). Hopefully Mayes can round up the draftees and get them all resigned.

there has been a suggestion we'll have a crack at free agents in the next couple of years. Some hope that we'd have been able to front end some contracts into the 2013 salary cap by bringning forward payments to players to further free up money for later years but I'm not sure if that ended up happening due to finances.

I think a club like us would take any top line talent willing to come - I doubt any club in the league would say no to any of the 5 names you've given there. People will obviously have opionions of the value of some (particularly Gibbs) but even if he hasn't lived up to the hype noone could deny he is a first 22 player at every club in the league.

obviously a key forward would be most handy for us but someone like Frawley or Reid would be timely to replace Merritt/Patful.

Yeah I'd think so. Apparently with some of the funding we're getting from the AFL, we're able to front end contracts for the year coming up so we pay the full 100% instead of 95%. Should give us extra $$ to chase free agents.

I think Reid could be a key forward for us, looked very good up forward this year but I suppose it helps when you have Cloke beside you, taking the no.1 defender. Don't think he'd leave the Pies but I thought Daisy would finish his career there so you never know.

don't think we should be thinking about getting in a bidding war over free agents. We have put a lot of time and money into developing our kids, so would prefer to see our $$$ go towards ensuring we keep all of them.

I think it can send a wrong message to kids who have been battling it out in the 2s, getting the odd game in the 1s while they train their guts out and then we parachute in some "b grader" or "has been" who gets a game in front of them. part of me thinks this is why we lost longer (bringing in martin and playing him consistently).

Yeah....good call...As our clubs in a bit of pooh financially... we need to help them out and introduce a user pays system for opposition supporters.Just leave your credit card details and we'll empty your account...:thumbsu:

Martin only played 5 games this year, so not sure we can blame the Longer situation on that.

And if we recruit the likes of Reid and Frawley, I don't think you can call them B graders- they'd be the first picked in their position,

As for free agents like Moloney, he's clearly filled a role, and made our midfield better. If some youngster was gunning it so much he could've dislodged him - but that simply didn't happen.

Similarly with McGuane - I expect he'll be handy as a third tall forward who can take a grab and provide defensive efforts - basically the role Cornelius couldn't play.

The club will only take a player who they think will improve the list - free agent or not.
