What's the point in making players 'earn' a lower number when they don't actually have to do anything worthwhile to earn it?
That's just arguing over the definition of the word 'earn'. I don't care if he gets a higher number or not. But for a first year player to get a game in his first year suggests he has done something right. Especially a player coming somewhat from obscurity. If the club deems he is improving, working hard and has a bright future, backed up by him being awarded his first senior call up late in the season, surely noone would begrudge him being given a jumper number upgrade.
The club obviously deemed that Tom Derickx (@Jonesracing82), a mature age recruit, despite being given a senior game last year did not meet the criteria. Not only did they not upgrade his number, they delisted him. ie. They went one way or the other.
I wasn't suggesting that anyone who gets a senior game deserves a jumper number upgrade. I was merely pointing out that, in McDonough's case, being awarded a senior game was clearly reward for a good season, in the club's eyes.

Interesting to see 2 rookies get 19 and 22.
Surprised Flossy didn't get promoted. Batch got out of 31 after his first year.![]()
he apprarently didn't want to change his #. Foley has always wanted to keep his also. would have loved to see Flossy in #17
So draftees have to earn their higher jumper number while rookies automatically get lower numbers.
Confused.

obviously being that the Club traded/drafted mature age players (those that were from another AFL Club) the Club sees them as 'proven' whereas the players from the state leagues and 18y.o players are see as unproven at AFL level. hence the need to 'earn' thier lower #'s. i personally like the idea.
Doesn't make sense as Gordon was an ex Swan.
I just think you either have a policy or you don't. Half hearted policies don't make any sense.
can only guess they see Gordon as an unproven/potential player, hence he'll need to earn a lower #.Doesn't make sense as Gordon was an ex Swan.
