No Test for the WACA - WA stadium mentality comes to fruition...

Perth's full of provincial conservatives. Funny how they didn't whinge about revenue distribution when it was on the other foot for near a century. But when they start doing well suddenly it's the biggest injustice of our 112 years.

I agree mate and I am a dinki di WA bloke. People have short memories.
However I do believe the GST carve up to WA is very poor to say the least.

You'd have a point if Victoria or New South Wales actually had as much distributed away from them as WA currently does.

WA gets less actual money in GST than the Northern Territory.

Everyone agrees with the principle of sharing, and that WA owes the country for years of being a net beneficiary. It just doesn't have to be repaid all at once.

There are a number of factors at play:

- States with subsidised industries (eg motor) are subsidised by the rest of the country. Every time we buy a car we are sending cash to Vic and SA
- Location of Federal Gov agencies. Victoria in particular gets a massive Commonwealth subsidy every year simply in the placement of so many federal public servants. More than 2x NSW and roughly 7x WA
- Defence contracts .... Victoria and SA have benefited to the tune of billions... that they would not get in a free market.
- Difference between taxes raised and distributions to the states - WA subsidy of the rest of the country is massive on this front: "Almost $15 billion more in taxes leaves WA each year than flows back into the State in Commonwealth spending.
The report spotlights the extent WA carries the rest of the Australian Federation.
It shows WA's net contribution to the other States and Territories is a staggering $6447 for each resident, way beyond that of the other two donor States - NSW and Victoria.
The analysis puts NSW's net contribution at just $2.2 billion, or $301 per person, and Victoria's at $1.3 billion, or $235 per person. Treasury estimates Canberra took $42 billion in taxation from WA but spent only $27 billion in the State in 2010-11, the most recent year for which data is available."
- Difference with GST: Out of all the GST years I don't think WA has benefitted yet.

The GST thing may only go back to 2000 but the other factors go back a long way. The gap between tax recieved and spent is not a new thing. The idea of "revenue distribution when it was on the other foot for near a century" is just not true.

Sounds like the same people responsible for equality in the AFL draw are responsible for money distribution to the States. WA are getting boned badly.

WA gets twice the GST 'shortfall' in mining revenues that other states don't get, so in net terms, they're still ahead.

BTW...If you ever start 'repaying the debt', Victoria would love to get some, but you know, we only get 90c in the dollar on GST as well.

Maybe the WA should be more responsible with it's spending, like instead of building a new stadium and giving it to the users, make the users pay for either all (Docklands) or most (MCG) of it. That should save them half a billion or so.

yeah you West Australians can really be a bunch of tossers. Its by complete fluke and default that within your state borders you have expensive rocks close to the earths surface that can be easily mined. Because of this you have been able to spend billions on new northern and southern train lines, a billion on just an entertainment centre, a billion on sinking railway lines between city & Northbridge just for aesthetic reasons - could have simply built over the top for half the cost, and another billion on Perth waterfront.
Its really quite hard to feel sorry for you, and just because you have mines within your state borders should not mean you get any better services than people living in other states, but you do.

Its like you're all rubbing your hands with glee at the fact that 25,000+ South Australians will loose their manufacturing jobs over the next few years when we loose our car industry, that your mines helped cause because of the high $AUD.

You do know what % of mining royalties are offset against the GST?

When you say Vic only gets 90c in the dollar "as well" I think you mean "as well as NSW." WA gets back less than half what it puts in.

Through defence contracts, the motor industry, the weight of public servants and the federal state grant process, Victoria has nothing to complain about. Maybe one day they will repay but not any time soon.

Here is an article from a Victorian economist: http://www.theage.com.au/federal-po...rra-monster-is-killing-us-20100822-13apt.html

Olympic dam alone is worth more to SA and Australia than the entire car industry.

And if the mining slowdown keeps going... how could the country afford to pay for the motor industry?

The GST 'shortfall' is about $3Billion.
Mining Royalties are about twice that. (source, WA budget papers)

No, NSW gets more. About 96% if memory serves.

Wow, just as well WA doesn't get any defense contracts, public servants or federal grants...I suppose you have figures to back those statements up or are you just throwing crap around?

As for the article...wow, one article, primarily an anti-immigration rant in the age...again, got anything substantial to back up your comments? Apart from export/import figures, it's got nothing (and that's fairly pointless...service industries like banking and insurance tend to work within the country).

Would think they have to eventually bite the bullet and combine footy and cricket into one great stadium where both could reap the benefits. Fans of both sports would benefit.

It's the way it's done in all other states (once Adelaide Oval is finished, which is ******* awesome in terms of location and facility) and it's working. We just don't have the economies of scale in this country to build great venues for individual sports I don't think.

Really need to get over the drop in pitch thing. Benefits far outweigh the negatives. Dropin or permanent, the way a pith plays is determined by how it's prepared. Any curator worth his salt can prepare a drop in pitch as required.

No we don't. We're merely catching up to the other states.

OH forgot about the 100 years that Vic and NSW has helped prop up WA with billions of dollars have we?

IMHO WA should breakaway and form their own country
They didnt want to be part of Australia in the beginning and had to be bribed to join the Commonwealth so now might be a good time to piss off.

At least the AFL would finally get their wish and be a genuine international sport!

Flying state flags is so, so irrelevant in 2013. We don't even have State of Origin!

Honestly, the people who believe WA is keeping Australia afloat and that Australia would be worse than Greece without it are so narrow. I'd love to imagine the place go ahead with secession... I'm sure the state of healthcare would be better than what we have now...

Know much Aus history finders or are you cherry picking bits that suit your argument - you arent that silly, you arent that ignorant?

Remember to post after the Adelaide test.

Herpa derp derp.

Arena was an excessive $540 million.
City Link is $360 million (less land sales). Half of it's buried and half of it's built over and it's not about aesthetics. It's about city building.
Perth Waterfront is $440 million (less land sales).

WTF is up with WA and stadiums? The most resource rich region in the world just about, and you have two stadiums that are third world standard! SORT IT OUT! I love, LOVE watching games from the WACA, now it seems we'll have to put up with the steaming turd that is Canberra for Test matches.

I'm sure if someone was bold enough to lift up a roll of fat from Jabba the Rinehart's arse that a billion or so dollars would be found, so bloody do it!

Christ on a bike! Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast was rebuilt in less than 18 months for $144 million! How hard can it be to get an AFL/Test cricket ground and stadium built in "Australia's richest city"?

/rant over.

1) it is inherent in WA culture to underspec things

2) the state govt has no revenue.
